Charles Kennedy RIP
Discussion
Still sad about this. I remember feeling he'd been stabbed in the back somewhat when he was pushed as party leader, but it seems his alcoholism was a much bigger problem than I'd realised. RIP to one of the few politicians I would be happy to buy a pint for. His opinion of the coalition's effect on the Lib Dems seems to have been prophetic.

If only Salmond had shown some class and said something along the lines of "Charles Kennedy was by far the most generous person I have ever met in politics. Sad loss of a great politician and, above all, a great man."
Really let himself down with his tirade
Where can I find AS comments in full, does anyone know? The above spectator article has the largest quote I've been able to find- google mostly throws up opinion articles ripping into AS for being the crassness personified.Really let himself down with his tirade

Why do we really bother to do anything in this life, when someone like that, educated, determined, a 'go getter' just pops his clogs at 55. It will happen to us all as well give or take 20-30 years.......Really, what's the deal ? And don't start on religion and all that guff.
Conversely, if we weren't going to die, there would be no point in doing anything, because we could always do it later!daytona365 said:

Because sometimes you get on top and feel like you've won at life, and that feels pretty damn awesome!Saw this post recently by Kevin Smith (director and awesome story teller) on the anniversary of his Dad's death, thought it was pretty decent:

12 years ago from right now, I put my Mom and Dad into a cab in Philadelphia and said goodnight. I had no idea I was actually saying goodbye to Dad. He died six hours later. It was bad.
However, before I put him in that cab? We'd all had dinner together at Morton's: Mom, Dad, my sister Virginia, her husband Eric, my brother Donald, my wife Jen and me. My Dad's last meal was hearty as fk: filet mignon, cheesecake and a couple Manhattan's. He spent hours at the table, listening to his adult kids telling stories and laughing. He was happy as fk: he'd won at life. Then he died. Nobody wants to leave this best of all possible worlds - but if you gotta go? At least go with a gut full of good food and a heart full of the love for a family you built with your best friend.

I watched QT and This Week lastnight.
I'm not sure how I feel about Susie Boniface making it about how drink kills so much talent, 1 in 10 men and 1 in 20 women.
I'm not sure what to make of Portillo's expression after Dianne Abbott spoke about Kennedy's wife and son in Parliament.
I found the bits of Charles Kennedy that This Week played better than Alastair Campbell's blog on him. Kennedy wasn't here long enough to see the Chilcot Inquiry released. I'm sure it'll be out soon.

Just a couple of clips of him on the show towards the end.

- Breaking Former Lib Dem leader Charles Kennedy died from "major haemorrhage" due to his alcoholism, his family say
What sort of consumption is required to do this amount of damage?
It depends on the person and their health in general I guess, but prolonged periods of alcoholism greatly increases the risk of such an issue occurring - whether it was one boozing session that caused it, or the culmination of many is something we probably won't find out but I'd say it is safe to say he'd had far, far more than his fair share.
