Can you imagine having to visit a state run shop just to purchase a 6 pack?
Especially with Theresa May in charge... get a knock on the door with some bloke saying "Our records indicate that you have purchased 25 cans of beer in this arbitrary period... you're going to rehab."
The state run offies in Sweden are actually quite good. Because it's state run they are obliged to stock every type of alcoholic drink imported into the Country. So, you get a massive choice. You choose from a catalogue like Argus. If a particular shop hasn't got you want they will get it by the following day.

Also, it isn't that expensive. Last time I was there the prices were the same as an offie in the UK. You just don't get the special offers - 8 cans for a fiver, etc - which is no great hardship.
The only drawback are the opening hours, ours was / is still 10am-6pm (2pm on Saturday) which means a bit of planning. But as above excellent choice, except cider. Choice of cider in Sweden was not to my taste so used to bring an estate car loaded up to gunwhales.

Anyway what does Scandinavian attitude to buying alcohol and visibility of individual tax status have anything to do with the thread subject, ie Brexit route.

Oh Ithink it's an alright idea... I just don't like the idea of Theresa May running the state that has state offies.

Home brew must be a big thing in Scandinavia I would have thought.

Yep, statistically they don't drink that much but consume lots of sugar!drink

Also a good market in flavourings, so you can turn your moonshine into an approximation of whisky.

Things might have changed now, but the vinmonopolets (state booze stores) used to just increase the price of the wine that they had imported by a nominal cost of living increase every year. Obviously, some of the good French wines increased in price much more back in France, so colleagues working for Total/Elf would buy up the good French wines and import them back to France for a healthy profit.
