We used to 'employ' a 17yr old lad. Sometimes he worked with me (we built a treehouse for my kids, chicken enclosure etc.) and sometimes I let him loose on his own. When I was with him, I let him use cordless tools like drill, impact driver, impact wrench etc. When he was on his own, I let him mow the lawn (petrol mower, ride on), use the leaf blower, sweep, paint sheds and fence and stuff. He stopped working for us when he went into training to join the merchant navy.

We now have a 14 yr old lad. I am a bit more careful, but I let him ride the mower, mow the bits that the ride on can't do with the petrol rotary, and of course paint fences and sheds and stuff, along with the usual weeding and sweeping and helping clean out the chickens. I don't let him lift things that are heavy, and I don't let him use ladders (he can use a hop-up though).

The first lad we 'found' via a bit of luck his mum was asking in the garage if they had any hours he could work, and my wife was in there, so she asked if he'd be interested in some gardening work.

The second we found on next-door.com, I think. As it turns out, his mum knows the mum of the first, so that worked out well.
