Hi,

I'm thinking of building a carport on the front of the garage. A wooden carport with a covered roof, just to keep the rain and frost off the car on the drive.

It would be in front of the garage, on the block paving. See the photo below, my garage and drive is the far one, the other belongs to my next door neighbour. Would it look ok do you think?

What sort of costs would be involved? Should I attach it to the garage or fence, or neither? How would I do this? Also, would I need planning permission for this? I would of course ask the neighbours.

I've had a search but I can't find many photos of carports built in front of garages. Has anyone on here done this?

Thanks,

Dan

PS. Sorry the photos aren't great, they're all I had uploaded as I'm at work today!

From memory Dan, you own the garage on the left and the garage on the right belongs to your adjoining neighbour. Do you know the legal status of constructing a permanent structure of some sort to the front of "your" side?

(I thought it might be best to clarify that before you potentialy get into any bother).

That's correct, yes. Mine is the far garage, the one on the left.

That's what I wanted to check out, whether I was allowed to build anything there.

Well if I was your neighbour I would not be too happy about it,

How would you feel if he planned to do the same?...Honestly.

A bit of frost never hurt any car...(unless it didn't have anti-freeze in)

Well personally if they did, I'd be happy as the ideal scenario would be a full double width carport for the both of us to share! But I know that's not going to happen. My neighbour lives alone, is fairly old now and unfortunately she was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer, so I'm sure a carport is very low on her list of priorities.

I did have the drive redone for her though smile Looks much better now - see the first pic.

But I see where you're coming from entirely, which is why I would discuss it with her first.

TBH, I can't decide whether it would look good or not!

What I meant was those two garages look really nice, especially illuminated, and most carports are usually a bit of an eyesore...smile

Not possible, would leave her without a drive! And her kitchen has a door into the garage.

I think wack was assuming the carport was just over your side not covering the entire area ! I wouldn't be happy with a single carport but a full size could be nice .

I would just build a single, my point was if my neighbour wanted a carport it would be ideal as a double would look much better.

depending on budget a nice green oak, cedar shale roof would look quite nice.

you would be surprised that the cost between single and double shouldnt be a huge amount more.

I meant that you might well know better than the rest of us the legale position of the areas in front of the garages and whether there are any specific restrictions on that area. The photos show a relatively new building and in my experience clients with those sorts of properties are more likely to have deeds available and those deeds are more likely to show clear areas that have responsibilities and/or restrictions. Do you have any of your paperwork to hand? (I'm not a solicitor but, for my sins, work within the estate agency sector).

Good point.

I remember when we bought the house there were restrictions on having a caravan, boat or a van in the drive. I’d need to check about a structure.

Dany,

Is the front of your house looking down on the parking/garages, and your neighbour, the nearest garage, must then be built to the right of your house from where you're looking if they've a door into their garage?

If that's the case, and I've understood your posts correctly, I think your carport would look poor regardless of what it's made from as it just doesn't "belong" in that space.

Sorry, I know from living on a modern-ish estate in Bormuff (Muscliffe) area some 20 years ago that shared drives/garages/carports were a no-go area. I don't expect the planning/neighbours' views of this would have changed - even with many more cars on the roads now.

Yep. Next door's house just in shot to the right of the garage. Their house is a right angle, my house is to the right of where I'm standing...

Here, right hand door, overlooking the drive:

PS. These were taken when we were looking to buy the house. I've since sorted the jungle herb garden, paving and the drive!

I think that it can be done. Take down the fence, erect two steel cantilever frames - one front, one rear - on the line of the fence, slope the roof f to r overlapping the garage by say 400mm plus:

type cladding then re-erect the fence inbetween the frames. Maybe £3K?

The fence isn't Dany's I don't think, so I can not see HOW that can work. Sorry. confused
