Hi

I bought a washing machine 3 weeks ago - it has been on some 20 times, and on Sunday I came in to a room of smoke.

I have spoken to the retailer, who insist that I must have a service engineer turn up to inspect the machine, prior to replacement.

I have asked to reject the machine under the sale of goods act - but the retailer states they reserve the right to demand an inspection first.

Is this true? If so I now have to wait a 8 days for an inspection prior to return / replacement.

Any advice pls.

Yes, the retailer has every right to inspect the goods to ensure that the fault hasn't arisen through misuse. Once a manufacturing defect is diagnosed, they should then arrange for repair/replacement within a reasonable timescale.

Stand in another room and close the door.

Have you called the manufacturer directly?

I'd add holding a fire extinguisher.
