Anyone got any suggestions for a pergola roof?

One of my summer projects is to build a timber pergola over my patio, but I'd like to have some kind of roof over part of it so we can remain sat under if it rains.

I don't like the look of corrugated plastic, so thinking maybe stretch some retractable waterproof fabric over it, and remove in winter. Just need to find some suitable fabric.

It would be covering this area..(attach beam across width of house above patio doors, with support posts at opposite end)

Good idea, but Id probably want it black to hide the dirt.

Would these be strong enough in strong winds? I once used normal corrugated sheets over a car port and they ripped apart in some strong winds.

I have a retractable canopy that runs below the cross beams of the pergola. Operates like a horizontal blind. Mine is Ali framed but I've seen plenty on timber pergolas.

Is yours a waterproof fabric canopy for use in the rain, or just for shade from the sun?

Its waterproof and good for shade. The idea was to have something there in the event the rain came down half way through eating etc. I'll post a snap Itomorrow if I remember.

They come in a range of thicknesses and are strong. They would have to be fixed down properly to avoid being lifted by wind suction. Google them and you'll find photos of them used like this.

I fitted some of these about 15 years ago. Brilliant stuff. Very durable. The only downside was having to get on top of it once a year with a stiff broom and a bucket of soapy water.

Building the wooden frame as you see fit, then install some eyelets & hang one of these under neath it as & when you need it?

A solid roof will make the area very dim, and anything see through quickly gets dirty & a pain to try and clean.

Like this, but underneath your wooden frame:
