Best floor paint?
Discussion
I'm looking for a dark grey matt or satin floor paint that will go straight onto bare wood (I'll hoover and mop it down first, it's just old floorboards after an ancient carpet was ripped out)), no priming or sanding, can ideally be put on with one of those varnish fleece mop things as well as a brush, and cover in one coat.
Needs to be bloody hardwearing.
Within easy reach I have trade centres for Ronseal, Johnstones, Crown, Sadolin, and all the brands they have sucked up such as Blackfriar.
I know I could go round them all, but just wondering if anyone has had experience of one or more and found it good. If a paint I like is too glossy, I presume they can add something like a mattifying agent to bring it closer to a matt finish?
I sanded and varnished brand new floorboards with Ronseal "Hard Glaze Satin Varnish" about 15 years ago, and they are still as good as new. Do they still make floor paint as hardy as that stuff is, or have the EU taken all the goodness out of them?

Oh, I should add - it should be able to go over previously painted areas with a light sanding or ideally no sanding. My staircase used to have a stair runner, with the sides of the treads and risers painted white gloss. Which is still glossy and white, despite being painted at least 20 years ago, and not getting much light - I wouldn't get a gloss white like that nowadays!
I do have a litre of Zinsser BIN if needed. And a gallon of Synstrip. I'm not looking for a perfect finish, just something hardy and not glossy.

Go with a good trade brand like Zinnser or Sika that is used commercially as it'll last 10 years without much wear. Avoid any of that Ronseal Floor and Garage paint they sell in the DIY Sheds it's utter rubbish.
A place I worked used it in there warehouse because they could have a few thousand over the trade equivalent a few passes with a forklift and they think was worn away in a week

That's great, cheers. I'll check out their ranges and see what they do.
What about Sikkens? When I bought my new (wooden) front door, they insisted that I use Sikkens paint, otherwise their 10 year guarantee on the door would not be valid. I think Sikkens are now owned by one of the big companies?
Haven't bloody well dropped their prices, though!

I'd use a tough, shellac primer like Zinsser BIN, and then a good quality oil floor paint from a proper paint brand.
I have a similar problem with added complexity. We used Osmo Poly X hard wax oil throughout the house, and I would now like to paint the dressing riom floor a light colour as it is too dark in there. Cue sanding the whole room again.
Honestly, I think carpet will be easier for me!

I'm not going to bother sanding, maybe a quick once-over with 40 grit to take any really nasty bits off - the place was built late 60's/early 70's so they are just bog standard pine/deal boards, no cupping or anything.
I did a quick test and did about 1 metre squared in about a minute to paintable standard with a Makita cordless random orbital - and I'll be using something as matt as I can get, so the finish doesn't have to be AS good!
From what I've seen of your stuff though, it'll be finish sanded with 1000 grit and you'll be able to see your face in it!

Just priced up how much Zinsser primer I would need, and even that would break the budget! I don't need this to last 10 years like the floor varnish did, I'll probably rip the lot out and replace with engineered flooring by then. Any suggestions as to what the best of the cheap options is? I have a hallway, stairs, half landing, and landing to do, so it'll be a fair amount of paint.
I literally want to hoover and mop the boards, let them dry totally, then slap this stuff on with a huge brush and hope it looks OK, Can use Zinsser B.I.N. on the painted areas - I have enough t do that. Otherwise, no primer. Any recommendations for a budget option?

I really don't like laminate, or vinyl, but I like painted floors and stairs. Like this...

(no idea how to insert a pic!)
It's never going to look as good as that, I'm just looking for a quick, relatively cheap job...

In the same position as you and just used this after a recommendation. Very easy to use, and does the job. I'm sure as it's from B&Q it'll be knocked by some, but had no issues so far.

Definitely interesting, it's glossy but they might be able to add a mattifier - not sure if they do that with epoxy paint also looking at Leyland Trade, sold by the Johnstones trade centre about a mile away - comes in the right colour and is satin, and not an epoxy so might key to the wood better without primer - I'll ask the fellas at the counter, the Johnstones trade place is very much trade, they seem to know everything about paints and if they don't, they have it on the computer. https://paint247.ppgnet.com/products.asp?pcid=2787...
I have used their trim and matt emulsions plenty of times, and they seem good, so their floor paint might be worth a try. 5l cans - it says to prime with a diluted coat of the paint, then chuck on a full coat.
