I have a large modern kitchen extension and would like to light up the patio area.

My original idea was a couple of 30w LED floodlights - that's the amount of light I'd like - but they look hideous

Are there any "pretty" versions ? So far I can't find any

The best option I can find after spending hours looking is a white 25cm sphere, I don't want plastic nor a traditional lantern style.

Any suggestions of suppliers

I've tried Ebay, Wayfair and most mainstream high street suppliers

Budget is £100 for 2 unless there's a good reason to raise it.

Have a look at the commercial lighting companies catalogues, JCC etc. You can find them for sale online individually and they are not that expensive, just double check dimensions.

You can get some fairly small 20w so maybe a greater number of lower powered fittings?

Or find a fitting that can accomodate a 30w corn bulb?

Do they need to be wall mounted ?

I know you said no plastic, but I went with these -
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00AZ8COX8/ref...

I switched the bulbs to Hue ones - so can have any colour & easy to control. IMHO they look great and provide a nice light across the patio.

Tip - buy the used ones from Amazon - they come with a continental plug so seem to get a lot of returns - I've bought 6 and all have been brand new.

Commercial / JCC was a good idea - but nothing caught my eye.

Any others to search ?

I don't mind modifying a housing to fit a floodlight into, but I haven't seen anything suitable

Cubes are interesting, I've looked at the ball versions in the past for the paths.

But the wiring is in the walls and not in the patio so they are going to be wall mounted.

Good thread, I'd like to replace mine. I have 4 small GU10 lights down our drive, they're not bright enough, don't spread the light far enough and because they were cheap the sun has faded them despite being almost permanently shaded!

I did look a while ago, but didn't find anything that wasn't either way over-budget or hideous. I should really swap them now as we're about to hit their most used time of the year.

Never knew CEF sold so many lights.

I've found what I want on there...

A 400mm globe - but then found it's designed to sit on top of a street light frown

Wondering whether it's worth modifying another base...

You won't get the same amount of light as a floodlight from anything less than that, however with well placed multiple lights you should be able to adequately light an area, depending on how big it is.

Do you have existing wiring in place to power the lights?

LED up and downlighters give quite a nice effect and a reasonable amount of light. Have you considered perimeter lighting the patio with some stake or bollard type lights?

Looks huge - it it's designed to go with a 70W SON bulb then it's almost a streetlight.

How big is the area to illuminate ?

I'm a Hue fan, so would likely go with this

Thanks but wiring is in and I hate those up/down lighters - pretty much only show up poor brickwork and no usable light.

I know it's perfect !

I'm in the countryside so the more the better but patio is 8m x 4m so each light is illuminating 4mx4m minimum

The best I've found on the High St is a 250mm which looks too small on the wall

Have just found these:

https://www.mr-resistor.co.uk/item.aspx?i=13122

300mm with a wall mount or 400mm on a pole - I'll call tomorrow 400 on a wall arm looks bodgeable

Check out the new hue floodlight. Looks unassuming and is controllable, including white balance I think.

If a 250 sphere looks too small, the Hue's I linked to will also be too small, they are 210x170. However, they would have the same bulb - an E27 so you're getting the same amount of light as the Mr Resistor ones.

I'd agree that the wall arm looks like it could be 'adapted' somehow and cheap enough just to buy 1 arm & experiment before fully committing.

I have one of the Hue floodlights - they are good (I'm all in with Hue so biassed) - but not pretty - they are less ugly than a halogen, or regular LED floodlight, but only just. Mine is on the floor lighting up a tree at the end of the garden. They are much brighter (and more expensive) than the regular E27 bulbs....
