After finally ordering a new mattress (John Ryan Origins Pocket 1500), we're looking a new base...super king.

We are set on an end lift ottoman for the storage and the other half knows what she wants...we've seen this one from Hugo and Sons and really I'm just looking for someone who has bought from them or has other suggestions.

Won't be to everybody's taste so no comments on the style please. Just whether it'll be sound or other recommendations.

A few points:
- This seems to be cheaper than anywhere else I can find by £100+
- No base for the ottoman, stuff stored directly on the carpet (not ideal)
- Best looking in her eyes
- Spoken to a shop, which I THINK supply from this manufacturer and they stopped selling the ottoman due to strength issues
- Weight of the mattress is 65kg so gas struts need to be strong enough

Can’t speak to to that particular bed but we have a storage ottoman with gas struts. They are plenty strong enough to left the mattress, duvet etc. In fact once extended they are strong enough that it takes quite a bit of effort to shut the bed again!

Funnily enough I've just ordered the same mattress. I've gone for an ottoman storage divan this time from divanbasedirect - comes with a 5 year warranty and the pistons lift up to 75kg, and it has a solid base.

Same here, we have some type of super-mega-uber mattress which weighs as much as the moon. The base (4 gas struts) copes fine.

Be very careful when you don't have the mattress on the base (moving house, or turning the mattress etc) as the base will take your head off.

Thanks for the replies. Seems I don't need to worry about weight limits too much...although not all gas struts are equal I guess.

Found another supplier called Everest beds which make their base in a solid frame so I assume are stronger/better quality. Also have received some great customer service from them. Perhaps these details are worth the extra £170 they charge.

You'll be wanting/needing 4 of the gas cylinders (rather than 2 that cheaper frames have) with at least 700Nm, probably 800Nm for super king. I'd recommend spending a bit more on a decent bed frame that will last, rather than buying cheap and needing to replace it in a few years (as I did).

Check these out, I have 2 and very solid apart from the headboard fixings which needed further fixings but bases very good for the money

We bought a fairly low budget £250 double otterman base from a local bed shop last year. It completely fell to bits after a year.

From a recommendation of a friend we’ve just bought a similar priced replacement from a seller called Esupasaver on eBay and it’s a million times stronger, really solid and I’m very pleased with it. Also came with a bed head and hardboard base so stored items aren’t directly on the carpet.

The Everest one is £730 so mid-range price and I'd hope decent quality.

I was sent this image of their build so looks fine on that side of things.

That image is identical to the one I've bought from these guys, and it's £499 for a super king: https://www.divanbasedirect.co.uk/collections/diva...

We got a cheap one from Argos which is already looking tired and will be relegated to the spare room as we got this one yesterday https://www.made.com/charley-king-size-ottoman-sto...
I also like this one from Tempur but it was out of budget https://uk.tempur.com/beds/ottoman-beds/horton-UKH...

You may find that will struggle with a heavy mattress, it's like the one I'm having to replace after just 4 years (sprung slats and only 2 gas struts).

The OH wants to get a Simba hybrid which I believe is around 40Kg. Hopefully that is OK headache

Yea it should be fine, I had the Simba hybrid for a while (sent it back within the 100 night trial though) - I was advised to board over the slats otherwise the mattress can sag between them.

Probably is the same. I asked if they manufacture themselves and they confirmed.

However, what's pictured is just the foundation of this https://everestbeds.co.uk/product-category/the-hil... , so the extra £200+ goes on the headboard, footboard and finish. I've found that floor standing headboards are surprisingly expensive.

Ah fair enough, you're right, the headboard was another £130ish or so for me.

After a courtesy message from Everest beds I ended up getting £100 off so the order has been placed.

Would definitely recommend them from a service perspective, let's hope the quality is as good.

Looking forward to our first night in a super king

We wanted an wooden ottoman bed, which in the style we wanted seemed to be an impossible task, so I made it instead.
