How do I Render over Cement Board?
Discussion
Long story short, I decided to take out the 1.2m x 1m window in my garage as I wanted to hang some more wall cabinets up and the window was taking up the only available space. Rather than brick it up, I decided to make it easier for myself and put in a studwork frame and then cement board on top. On the garage side, the existing walls are basic sand & cement render painted white. I now need to render on top of the cement boards inside to a depth of about 10-12mm and try to blend the final finish into the existing garage wall finish.
After a bit of research, it seems that cement board is actually a lousy substrate for sand & cement render. So, I probably should have bricked it up after all, but I am where I am... so wondering what the best process and products will be to get a well-bonded render finish that I can blend into the existing walls. Current thinking is to attach a metal lath to the cement boards to help whatever render I use to bonding better and then find a suitable render that will work to the depth I need and provide a finish similar to the existing walls.
There seem to be so many options for different primers and renders that I have no idea which route to go down, so looking for some advice. Most of the area will be covered by the wall cabinets, but as long as I get something that won't crack/fall off and that I can finish to the same texture and the existing sand & cement finish inside, then I'm not overly worried. It'll be painted white after application to match the existing walls.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

If you do use EML, there is a right way round AND a right way up to fix it, ask Google how to do it, very hard to describe! Not mega critical for your small area but it will make life easier when you come to render. Also screw through into the studs not just into the board itself. Where gloves as well when handling it.
Thanks for the advice. EML bought and fitted today and a liberal application of SBR as well, so hopefully that will provide enough of a key for the render to adhere to. Might attempt the render application tomorrow if I'm feeling brave. Not ever rendered before, so expecting a lot of mess and probably more ending up on the floor than on the wall.
