In prep for a new garage build I need to empty an old building -
There’s a kit car chassis I need to store in a double bay garage above a low slung car. It’s really only for storing it and won’t be worked on during storage.

Has anybody done this before please? It’s only a temporary measure and I’ll be looking to use a storage ramp/lift in the new build.
I’m just looking for ideas and, ideally, a supplier .
Thanks in advance

I've been looking at this sort of thing, but I think you need to check that the structural woodwork in the garage is up to it.

It can’t be attached to the garage structure so needs to be free standing- it’s only a “temporary” measure -

eBay… there were a few new and used for sale when I was looking at similar last year.

Are you renting or do you own?

For the weight you are talking about you can do something with some timber for a fraction of the cost of anything prefabricated (that probably wouldn't fit).

I've done both freestanding (in a council lockup) and attached in my own garage.

Jigsaw and a drill would be the only tools needed.

How big does the "shelf" need to be?

What's the approximate weight of the chassis you need to store?

Some companies offer heavy-duty storage racks specifically designed for vehicle storage. These are essentially strong steel frames that allow you to store one vehicle above another without a powered lift.

I'd suggest looking at suppliers like:

- Strongman Tools
- Clarke Garage Equipment
- Machine Mart
- SGS Engineering
- Trademasters

Many thanks for your replies

It’s a Westfield XI bare chassis so only about 100kg

It’s my place but the shed it is in doesn’t have a roof suitable to bolt anything to.

This. You probably only need a couple of 2x6" a couple of metres apart. Fix one end to the wall ideally for stability and 6" uprights at the other end.

100kg spread is pretty easy with 4x2 or double unistrut (assuming a single garage type span) with legs back to the floor in the middle and the other side braced down the wall.

I’m more concerned about how get the load up and down to it, as 100kg as a point load for a chain block or whatever is a lot more difficult.

Presumably it's not going that high as it has to fit under the current roof, so a fairly straightforward lift for 4 people.

Or... Put it sideways on at the back of the garage in a pair of step ups and park the other car's bonnet underneath. https://www.toolstation.com/werner-adjustable-pro-...

Did have a look for the old school supports for a couple of scaffolding planks

It would probably sit on pallet racking fine - as per Bill’s suggestion - it’s cheap second hand - plenty strong enough and a kit car chassis would sit nicely on it

I did just the same across the back of a 3m single garage - gave me a good makeshift mez to store car doors and subframes - I could also park the nose of a car under it so no garage length lost

Scaffolding is an option.

Standard steel tubes will take a fair load spanned across a single garage, I expect you can find a table online somewhere?

Thank you all very much for your suggestions- unistrut is a great idea as I’ve just remembered I’ve got a load of it from a previous project!!

As one poster has correctly guessed- it doesn’t need to be very high- just enough to get a low car underneath so can be about shoulder height.

I'd either make a frame from cheap wood (I think 63x38mm in 2.4m lengths is often pretty cheap) or get some form of pallet racking, either second hand or from Big Dug or similar.

100kg or so is bugger all really.

Getting it up there is an easy "who wants a beer" mates call.

I've put a Land Rover chassis on a garage roof (don't ask) with just myself and another friend doing it manually.
