Found in my garage (bristol area) and was quite aggressive when I got close with the camera. The triangle on the back looked more yellow/orange than in the pic - must be due to the flash.

False Widow - Steatoda grossa

This spider is frequently confused with the Black Widow, in fact the common name is 'False Widow'. The real Black Widow has a red marking on the base of the abdomen.

Really ?.

I thought the false widow was fairly common now, and wasnt considered dangerous as such, despite being a known biter.

Surprises me to see such a "serious" looking warning about them

It's creeping north from the south coast and has been doing so for the past 100 years.

I think the reporting issue is to do with location - it's already known they're in the south-west but if they're seen north of that it needs to be reported.
I suggest you get rid of them fast before they lay eggs and you have another hundred or so of them to deal with.
