I'm looking to rehome this dog, any takers?
Discussion
Hopefully this is allowed. If not sorry, delete it and I won't do it again
Another dog has come into my possession today. I do quite a lot of volunteer dog rescue stuff around Portugal, so when things come up near me I'll often be the first point of contact for a random tourist or expat who's found a dog.
This morning I've had a phone call saying a dog has been dumped outside a cafe in the resort that I live in. I've went down to check it out and found a scared and disorientated female dog curled up in a ball. She was very dehydrated and hungry.
This was it this morning when found :
I've brought it home and fed it. I couldn't get it to the vet as they're closed for easter, so this evening i took her to a friend who has a chip scanner. The dog isn't microchipped, so it has no owner.
Its about 3-4 years old. Her teeth are in good condition, she's perfect around kids and very submissive to my own dogs. She was happily walking on a lead :
Its pretty clear she's been someones pet at some point.
The thing is I just can't keep her. I live in a tourist resort. I'm already getting grief over noise etc as I have 4 rescues in my house right now. Someone has paid decent money to rent the apartment above me for a week and its not fair if i ruin someones holiday with a dog barking all night etc. This one does seem quiet but the last one wasn't.
Right now I have her in my next door neighbours laundry space. Its tiny, but its dry, safe and she has food and water at least :
She'll be going to the vet on monday and neutered if its not done already (fully expecting it to be needed as she's not chipped and had no collar). She'll also be going to the dog groomer to be tidied up and made a bit more photogenic
If I can't rehome her the future is looking very very grim. Ending up in this council run pound is a very realistic ending here
Any thoughts or questions, let me know. I'll post some more updated pictures if needed.
I've sent a load of strays and rescues from here to UK in the past. But I'm out of connections as far as 'end users' go. Every friend, and friend of a friend, that could possibly take a dog, has one at this point
So I'm now resorting to posting here. If anyones looking for a dog soon, please consider this one. We can have her passported and in your hands in a month or so. If she has a definite home and leaving date I can manage her at this end until then. via another foster or a dog hotel if needed. No cost to you at all - all the vet, passport, transport etc would be covered on this end. And as part of the passport process she'd be brought fully up to date with injections, health check and so on. So it'd actually end up being far cheaper than sourcing a UK dog if you wanted one
cheers
edit - dog is 3-4 years old at an estimate. And I never do an estimate in the style of a 2nd hand car dealer mileage reading and shave a bit off If I give you a mileage, its genuine to the best of my estimating abilities. Vet will confirm on monday.

Does she speak English...?
She will do. Passport process will take a month so I'm 99.99% certain that she'll be both fully toilet trained and know all the basic english commands before she leaves. Like I mentioned... she's definitely been someones pet before so this one is going to be a piece of piss to get "pet ready".
If anyones interested I can provide a handful of references via pm of people in UK who've had Portuguese rescue dogs from me and they've all ended up settling in brilliantly.

There is somebody on here running a thread about taking on a lurcher, maybe you can suggest this little one to them! She would need to be cat friendly I think.
Thats normally one of the first things we test them on after they've been to the vets. You could say they're going for a cat scan

Its hard to tell what size she is from the photos. I already have two pups but she looks adorable. If she is okay with other dogs then i might be interested...
I'll get a pic with her next to me when my next door neighbour gets home. The Moose said:
She's very tempting, but I'd want to meet a rescue first.

I've asked my FB mates - she's lovely! How would you like people to get in touch if anyone is interested in her?
If anyone outside of piston heads is interested someone can send me their contact details through here i guessThe Moose said:

Some of them do go to homes / owners they've never met before but a lot of them are just chance meetings via people who were out here on holiday. They fly back home and the dog joins them in a month. Simpo Two said:

Portuguese people do adopt dogs but their attitude to dogs as a whole is not good. They have a rather weird way of seeing sterilisation. They just don't believe in it. Also for a portuguese person its quite normal to keep a dog in a garden chained to a 6 foot chain, and never allowed in the house etc. I don't know why they have a dog like this... its not a pet and its not guarding anything either. Generally rehoming outside of portugal, or to expats in portugal, is the 'safer' choice. It seems as bizarre as unwanted British cats being packed up and shipped to, say, Italy...
Also the volume of dogs available comes into it too. There are far too many dogs here, we need to rehome at least some of them outside of Portugal. Partly because of the point above about people refusing to sterilise. And partly because the climate here allows dogs to thrive in the wild. If this were Newcastle or Glasgow the weather in the winter would thin the numbers down, but thats not the case here.
She's called "Jess" for now but she obviously doesn't know her own name so that can be changed to suit. She was left in the kitchen last night from 11pm till 12.30pm today and she hasn't pissed or st indoors. She was out for a 40 minute walk this afternoon and went outside, and seems quite happy on a lead. She's off to the vets tomorrow then I'll know a bit more.
okay sorry no more pics yet but i had her out walking again tonight. Her nose is about up to my knee. I'll get some pics tomorrow.
And heres a nice example of how portuguese see dogs, this is unfortunately completely expected. Update from a Brit living out in the sticks with portuguese neighbours. Taken from my FB timeline today

This week, just in my time line alone so a tiny fraction of the nonsense we have here:
dumped in a bin:
someone moved out of their house, left dog behind:
abandoned with something round its neck so tightly it nearly strangled itself :
2 separate litters, dumped in a bin in one box :

Got your pm, thanks.
Heres todays edition of "dheads in the algarve"
Someone goes to buy their food shopping, comes back to a dog dumped in their car
Someone else tied a brick to a dog and threw it off a cliff :

Anyway no more updates re other random dogs being treated like st. I just wanted to give a quick snapshot of what type of things we see going on here most days

Not good news on this one, but I'm unsure how serious it is. She had been dropped off to be sterilised this morning.
"Just got a call from the vet. Jess has a breathing problem. They think she has parasites on the lungs. They decided it was rusky to operate so took an x ray. She needs antibiotics gor 1 week and have to push firward operation till yhen. They will explain when u pick her up anytime after 5.30 pm. "
I guess I'll know more this evening

Sounds like lungworm. Hope she is ok, can be very serious if ssymptoms showing. Fingers crossed for her.
I guess we'll see this afternoon. Felt a lump on my other dogs chest so I'm taking her to have that checked too. On the plus side, I got a good deal on sterilisations - 10 of them for 780 euros in total so we've done a load of the dogs from a gypsy camp
The vet removed the full mammary gland (think thats the right phrase). That was done yesterday, she was back today for another injection. She's back home again today, had a lump of cheese and a slice of bacon and went straight to bed.
dog operation pic, put behind a spoiler in case you don't want to see it!
I'm meeting a lady in the next hour to show her Jess, she may be rehomed too. I thought I had her gone yesterday but that one fell through, so we'll see. She's on tablets for a week then hopefully being sterilised but i'm unsure if this person would want her now, or once the vet things done. Either way the sterilisation is paid for so it would need doing as soon as she's allowed.

I meant to say in the last post, part of the thing they removed has been sent for analysis so I guess I'll know soon whether it was cancerous , or if there are any further health implications if it was.
Jess was great when she went to meet a potential owner yesterday. The woman was a bit nervous about it all as she's never owned a dog before. But this one seems to be a great fit for a first owner. She's so calm, happy off lead and doesn't bother with cats, kids, cars, other dogs. This was her in the pub garden yesterday.
We walked down to the pub, and then drove back in the car we'd left there the day before:
She's going to stay overnight with the lady on Wednesday to see how she gets on. She seems good though... asking all the right questions and was playing with her for an hour or so when she came to see her. Hopefully this one all ends well, and with a local rehoming there is minimal financial pain for me (no passport, no dog bus ticket )

Hope she is recovering ok, prob a bit of bruising. Mammary tumour removals always seem to cause bruising etc. Fingers crossed as long as there is no seeding (mammary tumours tend to spread along the lymphatic system of the mammary glands) then it will be gone for a good while.
The bruising is hard to tell as I've been spraying it with Betadine which is discolouring it. But she seems happy enough, eating and drinking and likes to go on her walk still. I don't know how long it takes to come back on the test and the receptionist was struggling to explain it in english and i had somewhere else to be, so I just need to wait I suppose.bexVN said:
Our vets can get results next day as we pay for a courier service, without that it is usually approx 4 days, occasionally longer. (sometimes they will re check results etc).
Re the the wound, just be sure she isn't over walking, due to the area and type of surgery it is at risk of swelling and fluid building up. You prob won't need to worry re the betadine after couple more days, only if the wound edges look red. et.
Thanks, I really appreciate someone replying from a position of experience. Its just like I've posted in the super car forum and getting responses from a lambo main dealer tech Re the the wound, just be sure she isn't over walking, due to the area and type of surgery it is at risk of swelling and fluid building up. The sample was couriered, to Lisbon which is a couple of hours away.
With the walking, rain has been near non existent this week so the ground is very dusty which probably isn't ideal. Ideally I need to keep her away from other dogs as any well meaning attempt to play could hurt her and kick off all sorts off problems. So the small number of grass dog friendly areas nearby that I could drive to, are off the menu. I've been walking her around the resort twice daily (probably 3-4km each time). just walking pace though, on a short lead.
The girl who originally found her before she was handed to me, found her like this :
I was only meant to have her for a week as an emergency foster but its a long and boring story, which ended in me still having her a year or so later. She looks like this now (or did last week )
the girl who found her originally is now a good friend of mines, as a direct result of finding her. I phoned her and told her about this and she burst into tears... now i just felt like a complete arse for telling her. Maybe I should have waited to know either way
