Hi all, anyone know if I am likely to get stung on import charges bringing a few car parts back in my hand luggage on a return flight from the USA?

Spotted some adjustable control arms for about £120 as opposed to the £320+ they sell for here, was thinking of getting them shipped to my hotel while I am out there and bring them back in my luggage.

How would this be taken with regards to import charges? Would I be better off picking them up, labelling them as a gift then shipping via air mail?

You are allowed to bring goods of total value up to £145 back into the country tax free - its no different than bringing back and expsive bottle of wine or cigars, as long as they are under the limit.

Saying that, I've walked through the green channel with £1000 worth of wheels on my trolley, and on another occasion £4k worth of BAER brakes, and no-one batted an eyelid.*

  • In an alternative universe, for the benefit of any HMRC folks that may be reading this.

It depends on a few things really.

Will you go through the red channel, Things to Declare, in which case you might/will get charged?

or say nothing

And go through the green channel, in which case you could get picked out for a random search, if you get caught with dutiable goods you might loose your them, as its no good saying, "Sorry i didnt know the rules", as ignorance is no defense. Or you could be lucky enough not to get stopped and not pay anything.

Its a risk you, amd millions of others take every year

He's under the limt, so no need to go through the Red channel, and no need to 'risk' anything going through the Green channel?

Actually, it's now even more than that!

HMRC website said:
You can bring in other goods worth up to £340 without having to pay tax and/or duty.

If you arrive by private plane or private boat, you can only bring in goods worth up to £240 tax and duty free.

There's a difference between not reading something on the same page you are posting on, and not reading up elsewhere that the allowance has changed.
