I am looking for a really special/romantic holiday cottage for 2 next year, pretty much willing to travel anywhere in Scotland to find the right place. Ideally I am looking for somewhere off the beaten track with good walking, luxury features and an open fire. If you have any suggestions let me know, thanks.

I haven't used it but did have a little peek once! http://www.thetorridon.com/boathouse/. The location is very idillic; it's well situated for exploring the West Coast and has the added bonus of a nice hotel at hand if you get bored with eating pringles and pop tarts wink.

I can highly recommend Knockinaanm lodge:

http://www.knockinaamlodge.com/

We stayed in the Whin suite for three nights in March 2005.

Great place/location with it's own private bay. The service and food were second to none - outstanding.

We did some clay pigeon shooting on the beach - the missus didn't realise both barrels were loaded and almost took both the 'instructor's' and my feet off! She stopped after that eek

The Blue Reef cottages are 5 star cottages on the Isle of Harris. Its got great views over to Taransay (Where Castaway was filmed) and if you like golfing there's a golf course right in front of it which is in the top 10 best golfing secrets in the world apparently according to some magazine as its a natural course. And Harris has some of the best beaches I have ever been to, and their within walking distance of this place. Its also got good windy roads.

I've never stayed, driven past them a good few times while going for a drive to Harris from Lewis.

Indeed.. I can recommend both the cottage and the location

(I'm biased though, as I run www.Torridon.org )

FYI - this photo taken yards from the boathouse

Bigger than what you need, but this is nice -

http://www.greatnorthlodges.co.uk/Osprey.htm

I know the owners of that one, but seems to be plenty of other nice choices on that website.

Can also recommend this for something smaller -

Ta

I stay on Harris at least once a year, and have done for ten years (many of these are from Harris): http://www.stevecarter.com/harris-2007/hebrides.ht...

In good weather it's my fav place on the plannet. (And I've been all over). But I have to warn anyone thinking of going that in bad weather, there is fk all to do on Harris, so you'll have to enjoy scrabble! We are lucky as we are not far from the ferry, so when we get good weather, we pop across. But booking in advance is taking a big risk!

I know the cottage in question... it is in a stunning part of Harris and wins lots of awards.

I live on the island, up in Lewis, and the weather does get bad every now and then, but on the whole its probably better than the mainland as we don't get the extreme's they get (rain and wind) and it doesn't get unbareably hot. The last two summers have been great compared to the rest of the country, last year especially as we went about four months of excellent sunshine.

All in all, the weathers not as bad as people make out.

I have just booked the place below. I wanted somewhere remote, but I think this is very extreme!!!
Down an 8 mile track drive passing no other properties.

I cant wait-total seclusion and peace, with me, her indoors and the dogs.

Hey... but you get to use this road almost all to yourself (apart from me of course). It's the main drag through Glencarron - although 'drag' is probably not the right word.

You'll enjoy it more in the 996 than the Landy! But with dogs I guess the Landy will win. They'll have a great time... one of the reasons we moved up here. Check out some of the beaches near Applecross (Good pub there too).

I'm up the road at Torridon: www.Torridon.org
