Nerd augmentation alert: Ross Brawn paid Honda £1 to buy the F1 company and form Brawn GP. Brawn paid in cash and the boss of Honda still to this day has the £1 coin that Ross Brawn gave him.
So here’s a question : to complete the deal, money has to change hands. However, if the boss still has the physical £1, it then surely hasn’t been banked or paid in to Honda. So the deal is incomplete right?

(I assume the £1 coin thing is a nice story and may be a visual gesture, but the transaction perhaps happened electronically etc)
The records will show that Brawn paid money to Honda in return for ownership of the F1 team and that this is verified by both parties by their signature on the relevant paperwork. What the recipient does with the coin is irrelevant. In fact, the coin itself is irrelevant. It's simply a gesture of transaction.

I should have put a smiley after my message as my tongue was firmly in my cheek!!!! And it still is…. If that physical coin is in Honda’s Boss’s possession, then the coin is property of Honda as the sold the F1 team. When the boss man leaves it’s not his property smile

Why are oil producing Middle Eastern countries still very rich,
while African countries that are abundant with minerals are still very poor ?

The ME countries exploited their resources via very few guys at the top, supported by the West in gaining control.

From there, they've maintained control of those oil fields.

African nations, even full of minerals, have never had that setup. More often than not, the rights to those minerals were either taken or bought, so the ultimate profits go to the purchaser, not the ruler/nation.

Exploitation of undeveloped Africa hasn't stopped since the 1800s. The Western World in general lines it's pockets, because it's easy to do so. America, Russia, the UK etc etc all have their fingers in the pie.

Middle Eastern countries' wealth was discovered in far more modern times when the area was already quite economically advanced and was more isolated from Western economic greed.

Having done some Google research, it seems (as ever) it's not that simple...

The first ME oil fields were Persian, and we (the British) basically wrapped the entire lot up then allowed Persia to have 16% of the profits. Similar to approaches in Africa and elsewhere.

However, then WW2 happened - and suddenly you had massively increased strategic importance, alongside various power players all being able to play for a piece. Hence Operation Ajax (founded on whipping up anti-communism fears) and the Shah getting put in. Except the Iranian nationalism and anger at what was happening somewhat lead to the revolution.

So, at least for Persia/Iran - it would appear that initially it was exactly the same as elsewhere. Difference being the global realpolitik of the time, and the locals being willing to collaborate to change the leadership that was pandering to the West exploiting them.

Not just about oil. Africa has been plundered for many more of its resources for considerably longer than anywhere in the ME.

How do I create a sovereign nation?

I have found $10bn down the back of the sofa, and obviously all of my mates have $10bn too. We all chip in and the nice people in Athens are happy to sell us a spare empty island, so we move in, build an airport, some nice flats, and derestrict the motorways.

Greece is happy for us to secede, the population votes 100% in a referendum to become East Oligarchia, we've got a flag and Beyoncé is writing the new national anthem.

Is that it? We just automatically get a desk at the UN? Or does someone want us to fill in some forms somewhere?

You would need to decide on the system of governance and establish principles of law and the mechanism of regulation that would enforce those laws including a legal system, police force, courts, etc.

You then need to establish a fair tax system, a banking system and welfare instruments including a healthcare infrastructure, waste management, sanitation and agricultural policies to ensure your people can eat.

Providing your intentions are good and the system you implement are sound and conform to international conventions, then the UN would allow you to apply for membership and may even provide assistance to you. But membership has to be agreed by all other member states so be nice!

Ooh, I'm just back from the senate. I think we're good.

We're going for Sortition government, three people picked for a year. We'll cut and paste the Danish legal system, and hire in some Swiss guards to run everything.

We own the banks, nobody wants to pay any taxes, and we'll get Claridges to deliver all the food.

Anybody want a passport?

By being convinced that it's all someone else's fault (immigrants are a go to).

Terra nullius is in short supply, so I'd suggest buying somewhere or organising a bloody coup. Venezuela is very badly run but has a lot of natural resources, between oil and tourism it should be as rich as a east european state.

Since the start of time, the elite have lived a life of absolute luxury.

Yonks ago, there were working classes so poor they literally didn't have a pot to piss in to be able to sell their urine to the local tanner.

I'd suggest that over the course of history, it is the working classes lifestyles that have improved the most.

This is the kind of bold thinking we welcome in Oligarchia. Welcome.

So that's Bodhi as Head of Taunting the French and Foreign Secretary,
21st Century Man to Finance Minister,
StevieBee as Head of Policy,
Hidetheelephants for Trade and Industry.

Still need someone for Helipads, Superyachts and Transport, and someone for Ministry of Sound and 24 hour partying.

Might need a special envoy to Colombia too, on reflection.
