And on the flipside, the crown on one of my implants fell off the other day. Rang the dentist, got an appointment the same day, went in and got the crown replaced. Cost? Nothing.

Okay, so they've had their money out of me already for the implant 15 years ago, but even so I didn't expect them to replace it for nothing when it wasn't their fault it fell off a decade and a half later.

Paid £600 for a gold crown and filling a few months ago (private). You’re complaining about 20 quid?

I've just paid the same for my exam although if you ask them to do a scrape and clean you get that thrown in for the price. they don't do it as standard but you don't pay more for it when you get your check up.
That's a bit naughty really - it's getting like car servicing contracts on many brands where they'll only do the most basic stuff and everything else is only done if needed. Yet if you're PAYG they'll tell you all sorts of work is essential.

Under the NHS our dentist would only ever do what the OP said - then insist you paid for a hygienist. Now I pay £20ish/mth for Denplan and that includes the hygienist every 3 months.

I haven't been since my last visit resulted in multiple injections on 3 different occasions by some romanian chap (ADP) ended up in hospital 3 months later for an extraction as living with the slight pain was much easier then having drills and all sorts hammering away when the injections did sod all! they wanted over 400 quid at the time for a crown (whatever the correct term is) or extraction.

Fair comments, and you echo what the missus said.
It's NOT really fair comment is it, because your unease is well founded.

The NHS pays your dentist in addition to your £20 to do a competent check up and any cleaning required and discuss your needs.

Clearly that is not possible in 3 minutes.

In effect the NHS checkup has become a money making exercise, merely cramming as many 'charging units' into an hour as possible and getting them to return every 6 months (which is too frequently for people with good health). The actual dentistry bit is ignored!

What you should get is:

"At each check-up, your dentist should:
Examine your teeth, gums and mouth.
Ask about your general health and any problems you’ve had with your teeth, mouth or gums since your last visit.
Ask about, and give you advice on, your diet, smoking and alcohol use, and teeth-cleaning habits.
Discuss a date for your next visit."

Also x-rays and a scale and polish are included if necessary.

If your mouth is in such excellent health that 3 minutes suffices, a 2-year gap between checkups would be fine, but they want you in every 6 months to make you a nice little profitable charging unit, because as you rightly guessed, it's money for nothing from you AND the TAXPAYER.

Dentist charges are high but having your teeth in a glass at the side of the bed is worth paying anything to avoid.

Over the years I have spent thousands on treatment and a few years ago I started with Implants. I have now got 7 implants at £2200 each plus all but one tooth crowned. I hate the fact that despite having regular check ups my enamel just fell away, nothing to do with oral care, just bad luck.

I had a filling come out, before it was eventually crowned, whilst on holiday in Chicago. Went to the local dentist who looked in my mouth and said, "Jeez this is one expensive mouth" and then charged $300 dollars to put it back in.

My wife has just spent £4000 having her teeth straightened and will start on the cosmetic side in 4 months time. God knows how much that will cost but worth every penny.

Our American friends all comment on the state of the British teeth and it is true due to the NHS just doing the minimum in the 60's and 70's and even now not doing much more.

Well I must have saved myself a small fortune over the years as dentists terrify me since a bad experience when I was 7.

And before you ask, yes I still have them all.

Quite and if you need major work it will cost no more than £230 ish for all visits. They take longer than 2 minutes.
Unless you live in Wales, in which case the max charge is £185 all in.

I'm receiving a crown on a front incisor which was victim to me going "over the bars" on my bike!

I wish I could get to see an NHS dentist, but you just cant register in my part of the UK
Every now and then a practice advertises places but they fill up instantaneously

Most of the good people here are private only

So in my opinion the OP should be happy that you actually have an NHS dentist

And we should all be scared about what would happen if the doctors and consultants opted out which the dentists largely did in the 70s and 80s

Except they wont as the doc's havent got the bottle..................

I've just had an emergency appointment for serious tooth pain. Haven't been to the dentist since 2009 so was deregistered. I was x-rayed and it was found that I had an infection of the root. The dentist gave me the choice of a simple dressing and then having to find another dentist to do some root canal work or have it extracted there and then. I chose extraction for a total cost of £13.50. Bargain I thought

I used to share a house with my dentist years ago.
When my exgirlfriend starting using him, I used to put him right off by reminding him, when she was due for treatment, of what I'd put in her mouth first.
