Mountain Biking. I have no idea why.

Used to love a blast through the trails. Had a proper bike (Orange) with trick forks and all the gear. 21 years ago, we moved to a house literally a minute from one of the best mountain bike blasts in Essex if not the South East (Danbury Common) and miles of other excellent routes. I think I ventured out twice since we moved here.
Interesting take.

Same as moving to Spain/Lake District e.g. assuming it will be as enjoyable as visiting for a holiday. It never is of course.

The other one is moving closer to your favourite pub or restauarant. You will probably stop going.

F1 and Foorball.

Football is a bunch of 22 multi-millionaires kicking an inflated pigs bladder around. What gets me isn't the wealth, but the cheating/diving/acting which really offends me. Same with F1 to a degree - too much politics.

What would make me watch either and justify their salaries? Random concealed landmines. biggrin

Squash - used to play 3 times a week until a busted ankle and tennis elbow took their toll

Cycling - weekly 30 -50 mile rides and multiple 100+ events - too bloody hilly where I live now and the roads are lethal!

Fast Bikes and Cars - see state of roads above!

Replaced with:

Dogs - walking, training, breeding and picking up on local shoots.

Pool - now I have my own table and I’m in a decent league my standard is improving

F3k - hand launch thermal gliders - nice field opposite makes a nice site for flying through the summer

Live TV - haven't watched it for over 12 months and the times I have looked, there's nothing worth watching.
This always makes me laugh, there are 100+ channels to choose from. when I was a kid there were two in black and white.

Sorry to hear of your predicament btw, good luck.

Lots,

Popular music, okay it's an obvious one, but there was a time I was a little sad I didn't recognise most of the songs on Radio 1 anymore, these days, it's just noise. I'm not ready to say the music of era was better, because it wasn't, it was just my era.

Bedroom antics, hard to say, but my desire is seriously on the wane and hoping the planets have aligned with the wife hardly seems worth the effort.

F1, not alone or helped by a dominant Champion I don't like (few outside Holland do it seems), but the tail end of the current regs are predictable. I watch Drive to Survive with glee, I rarely if ever watch the races.

Nightclubs, flash bars, that sort of thing. My Wife is going through her own "just turned 40" crisis and likes all that crap again, I could do without.

Consumer 'stuff' I couldn't give less of a toss if I tried, I lost interest in the latest thing a while ago, but now when I see the guys out there with the fashionable dryrobe, dog breed , shoe, phone, watch or whatever, I feel a little sad inside, it's part of the human condition but it does no one any good.

Most enthusiasts' cars, roads are busier than ever, limits lower, fines bigger, camera everywhere and should the worst happen, so are the legal consequences, and against that backdrop most manufacturers are still pushing bigger, heavier cars with more and more power and grip. Not to mention cost - last years 'must have' car was a 500bhp estate for £100k. I can't afford that, but I can't even find any interest in the thought of it.
Scary, this could have been written by me. Years ago I dreamed of owning a proper sports car, now all I can think of is how much of a hassle owning one would be with the potholed roads, poor driving standards and 20MPH limits everywhere. I bought a coupe last year and now I hate it as the suspension is too hard, I cannot be bothered with a manual gearbox anymore, no back doors and it is too low and small. I literally just want an automatic SUV with the biggest tyres and softest suspension possible now.

Computer games - a couple of years ago I bought a gaming laptop and steering wheel after not gaming for over 20 years. Now occasionally I force myself to play games on it, but I lose interest after 20 minutes.

TV - I have Netflix and find myself flicking around for 20 minutes, can't find anything I want to watch and turn it off.

Eating out - Like many others have said, the prices are a complete joke and the quality for most places is barely better than Weatherspoons.

Work - Just recently I have really started to hate working and I dream of being able to retire. I spend a lot of time thinking about my exit strategy from the world of work and invest my money in my pension/BTL accordingly.

Stuff - Just no interest in owning things now, and especially the time taken to pay for them. I have a challenge with my partner to not buy any clothes this year, I know I will easily manage this.

Holidays - As others have said, stress, hassle and basically opening your wallet from the second you leave the house until the second you get home.

Music - I realised I like very little music that came out after I reached the age of 30.

A lot of this stuff can be reframed as 'gaining' interest in avoiding stress and anxeity, totally reasonable as the aging body is more sensitive to these things.

For eg your interest in avoiding car park dings has grown immensely!

Cycling. The state of the roads and the fact car is king has pretty much deterred me from going out.
Probably not been out since 2022.

Going on holiday. I just can't be arsed anymore, I'd rather stay at home and save myself the expense and stress.
Amen brother.

I suspect most people only do it to show off on social media.
That's right. An entire industry only kicked off after social media became a thing.

No-one ever went on holiday before then.

Is most of the stuff because we hit a certain age ? Mid 40’s ?

Plus we live in the UK which is miserable.

I personally would like there to be actually nice dry warm weather say from May to October. Not too hot 20 degrees to 23 suits me.
But yeah god give me some dry weather. Swear so far this year it’s rained 99% of the time.

When I clicked on this thread my first thought was BMW.

What has happened to the product that we all lusted over in the late eighties, early nineties..?
It's depressing. I dropped into a BMW main dealer a few weeks ago. The highlights among the monstrosities were an XM in black with gold trim on it, a 7 Series with illuminated pink interior trim and an M2 with the extra bits around the wheel arches that look like decals that came free with a copy of Max Power. I had to go outside and wander around the used car section to recover from the tackiness overload.
Agreed. I popped in to my local BMW dealer in Edinburgh at the weekend. Jeez the showroom didn't have one decent looking car. The new 5 series looks awful, the grille on the 4 series is a mess, and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the new iX2 - what were BMW thinking?!

Hmmm I can't think of anything I've lost interest in that I was interested in over the years.

I've adjusted my behaviour because I stopped working last year. I'm a lot slower at driving, fixing things, decorating, walking, responding. I have a more don't care it can wait until I'm ready attitude nowadays.

Cycling - Bought a brand new bike once lockdown ended and prices dropped a bit but is still far too much for my ability. It's a superbike and I'm way off being a match for it. Man maths was that I could never blame the bike if I'd had a bad ride. It's barely done 300 miles because of severe hayfever, life happening and injuries through other things. I have bought new kit recently and once weather improves I'll be out as I've found a hayfever solution too. I could ride in the rain but that's just miserable.

Drinking - Let go of all my friends who lived for the weekend. My friends now all have kids and I'm the only single one. I always need car or bike, plus the weight gain so it's never worth it. I'd rather climb a mountain.

Photography - Used to love doing astro but it's time and weather dependent too. I get quite down seeing others take great pictures when I think I shoulv'e been out.

Fishing - Lost all interest once dad died. I'd been off it for a few years anyway and then decided to try again, Dad was excited and we made plans to go but within a month he was gone and it never happened. That was September.

Gaming - Used to spend thousands a year. Now the PS5 is barely on. May play Gran Turismo for a bit but it's a game you need to play all the time to stay sharp. Debated buying a direct drive but I'd be another grand in and for what? Tekken 8 is similar. It was fun but now it's done I've lost interest in it and no interest in online anymore. Played Ghost of Tsushima which was free and really great.

Now most of my time is spent looking after the dog and walking him places. I love him to bits but adjusting to the routines was the hard part and now never having peace. But that's fine, that's part of the fun and knew this going into it. I walk a lot anyway so that's why I got him. Want to try and get more mountains done this year. Done Welsh 3 Peaks and UK 3 Peaks last year.

Still got plenty to do on my house and sort Dad's house out which I'm hating but has to be done. Also got the motorbike which towards the end of last year was great as I was still grieving. I've lost 4kg since Jan so bought my first leathers. Have mates to ride with and there's a few charity rides this year so looking forward to that. I still like driving but only alone. Driving with others and going to meets I still find hard work. Plenty to tinker on the GR86 when I can justify the funds.

Lost my interest in Motorcycling when bikes went all super-modern.
Was there a better time for biking than the time of 90's bikes? Remember the fuss at the launch of the FireBlade? Or FZR/GSXR/ZXR successors released in an attempt to keep up with it? Great days.
Now, they seem all the same or are super-exotica Italian stuff at £40k. In the 90's, a 916 wasn't THAT unreachable moneywise (was it??).
I've left them to it.

TV - maybe because we bingewatch shows that are recommended and VERY good, we struggle to maintain our attention on something mediocre but would have been good enough 10 or 20 years ago.

Drinking - beer at £6 pint everywhere. I'm doing sums at how much I'm spending compared to drinking at home. The difference is getting too big to NOT make decisions.

Cars - again, nothing excites me with modern stuff. The onset of subscribing for software to enable you to operate the heated seats etc. It's a piss-take.

Holidays - my missus would go on holiday 3-4 times a year. I would crack at spending so much time in airports. I like one holiday a year so that it's something to look forward to but even now, I'm struggling to decide where to go. Even Greece has increased it's prices everywhere so that a beer is the same as second-city prices.

I just think I'm getting more grumpier...

Cars and driving.

Used to love cars, owning them, driving them, detailing etc..

I suppose as I grew through my 20's my attitude towards risk just changed and along with the country wide blanket 20 limit, state of the roads and the increase in other types of road users, it just isn't that fun any more. I haven't waxed a car for well over 3 years and the cars are lucky if they get a full wash once a year.

I've gone from a hot hatch to a pair of auto SUVs which better suit other hobbies now.

Nights out and drinking in general.

I used to be a Friday, Saturday and Sunday night type of person but I just can hack it anymore (or afford it) and the thought of wasting entire Saturdays and Sundays sat around with a hangover is not appealing anymore.

I also have firearms and the risk of some tt starting trouble while out is too much. Following the exposure of the complete shambles that is firearms licensing in the UK and the Jake Davidson/ Southampton tragedy, firearms depts are far more likely to revoke first and ask questions later even in cases of self defense. As I don't have £15k to fund a legal battle with the police to get a revoked license reinstated the risk is too much.

I could quite happily become T total from now onwards and I don't think i'd miss it at all.

On a positive note I have replaced the above with the following:

Fitness and health.

I lost a ton of weight over the last 5 years and am at the gym lifting heavy 4-5 times per week. I get far more enjoyment out of being in shape, eating well and not being a fat than I ever did from cars or nights out. A gym membership is £27.50 per month compared to at least £27.50 on a single round of drinks in town and despite the stereotype, that huge ugly bloke in the dark corner of your gym is usually lovely biglaugh

Country sports and competitive target shooting.

The countryside is a wonderful place to be when those who live in the city aren't trying to dictate how those who live in the countryside should live their lives. Lots of fun and interesting people. Attending comps has taken me all around the country and although I won't be troubling any of the top competitive shooters anytime soon I still enjoy it immensely.

This is the point though. When I was a kid there were three channels and the TV we had for long enough was black & white... and there were plenty of things I really looked forward to watching. Now we have hundreds of channels and I can count the number of things I consider worth my time on one hand.
