Steamer,
No echo, and the smoke resembles smoke from a cigarette/cigar, and we dont smoke, and so far its always been downstairs. Not worried at all, in fact if it doesnt show fro a few weeks i get worried its buggered off.
I do get a sense of something when i am working in my shed, so i just explain what i am doing.
Now That could be my old lab Henry who used to love lying in front of the lathe so he just made me off balance!!. We use to call him the consulting engineer. He used to arrive every night at nine on the dot ,whack the door open with a headbutt, and bark in that 'i want a walk NOW' bark
It might be him, but not the smoke as that was going on when he was still here. However our first Lab Eric, died in my arms in the same room in 1998, three weeks after my mum going. I dont recall the smoke before then.

Exactly. No roman ghosts, Viking ghosts, caveman ghosts. No ghosts from thousands of years of human history. In fact, hardly anyone saw ghosts at all until Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol, and then they became very popular. And why do people only ever see them when they are alone? Most of the time people are with other people, but ghosts never appear then? Very odd. You could almost be forgiven for thinking they don't exist at all!
There are plenty of stories of old ghosts tbf.
There's one about builders seeing of a platoon of roman soldiers walking through cellars in York, they weren't visible below the knee because the ground level back then was a lot lower. Also a sotry of Queen boudaccea (sp?) being seen on a chariot somewhere or other.

I'm open minded about ghosts n' st. Never had any experiences but love the stories!

My FIL fought in WW2.

When he was in Italy he was driving a truck along a narrow mountain road. There were a few trees along the road side and beyond those trees were cliffs, one up, one down.

In the headlights he saw a soldier wearing Napoleonic uniform. He stopped. There was no sign of the soldier.
The next night this happened again. The passengers in the front saw him to.
The third night they were ready. No one liked being messed about in what was still very dangerous territory.

They drove slowly and stopped just short of where the soldier had been seen the previous night and jumped out, guns ready.

They found nothing.

Except for a booby trap wire a hands width in front of the front bumper.

My FIL said the ghost saved their lives.

Possibly because most of the places older ghosts would haunt have long gone. However a fair few Victorian buildings still survive.

Also a large population with a high death rate would be expected to produce more spooks. The Victorian era ticks that box well compared to previous ones in the first instance and wasn't much better in the second.

There are stories of modern ghosts, phantom car drivers, cyclists, WW2 pilots, ghostly workmen in factories etc.

Dad used to own an old pub (500 or so years old). We're a pretty rational family and not one for ghost stories but we all felt uncomfortable whilst living there. It's the only place I've been where I've had a 'feeling', not had one before or since.

The weird thing was, it was only in a fairly unassuming place inside the pub. The pub was arranged like an L shape, with the kitchen and dining area at the top of the L and the bar going down from there and around the corner. There was a door on the opposite side of the dining area from the kitchen that takes you into the old disused upstairs. It's this path from kitchen to door that used to be strange.

I and other people including my Dad could be working around this area minding our own business and suddenly the hairs would go on the back of your neck and I could swear someone was stood directly behind me watching from near the empty kitchen. Happened a few times when I wasn't expecting it.

Our internal phones used to ring sometimes in the middle of the night from the phone by the kitchen door up to our flat and Dad swore it was breathing on the other end. Pub was locked and alarmed every night with cameras recording.

The dogs used to stare and growl for hours at the corner of the room that's directly above this area. Once happened in the night when I was left to look after the place on my own overnight. Don't think I slept.

The best one was a new bar guy that had recently started. Him and my dad were working the bar late one night with my Dad stood on the bottom bar, with the new guy on the corner. He looked up toward the dining area and saw my step mum walk across from the kitchen to the disused upstairs and shouted her with no reply. He asked my Dad what she'd be going up there for, let alone at that time of night, so my Dad went to look and then called her mobile. She was asleep in the other flat where she'd been all evening, looking after my little brother. The bar guy swore he saw a woman with black hair and a white top walk across. He was absolutely certain it was a person, he thought someone was wandering around that shouldn't be there, my Dad went to check and no one was there.

My Dad never asked anyone but over time he was told that apparently a few of the old owners had experienced something similar.

Thanks for all these guys. I'm genuinely a little bit apprehensive about going to brush my teeth...

Wish me luck that I don't encounter a wking, cloaked man with a pet puma.

This happened in September 08 and is 100% genuine.

Me, Mrs Speed, our daughter, my SIL and her daughter fly out to Spain on hols in my family's apartment. We land, get in a cab and head to the flat. We unload all the bags, but in a moment of madness, just as I wave the taxi driver off, I realise my hand luggage with EVERYTHING in - flat keys, cash, cards, laptop, camera, passports, everything - is on the passenger seat of the cab.

So JUST as he sets off I run after the cab, banging on the windows shouting for him to stop, but he totally ignores me and drives off into the night. I'm furious but fortunately manage to get hold of a spare set of keys and we all get some sleep.

The following morning we all go down for breakfast at a cafe under the apartment, then I head off to the Police Station so I can get a report for the insurance claim.

After seeing the cops, and while walking away form the Police Station, I take out the report they've given me to have a look, and the first thing I notice is its number in the top right hand corner: 13666. I shake my head, smile and mention it to the wife when I"m back. At which point she calmly points out that we'd all been sat on row 13 on the plane the day before, and we'd sat at table 13 at the cafe that morning.

The stock markets crashed a day or two later and I lost tens of thousands overnight.

Not a great holiday. And I've still got that police report to this day. And it still freaks me out.

We had the same in our house, but the things would never, ever be seen again. Jewelery, money, our kids toys would be gone, forever.... :O

Turned out our house maid was a thriving !

I see no reason anyone would doubt that in the first place. It's almost like you've went out of your way to find a pattern.

Come on now, misery guts.
He saw the number 13 no few than 3 times in 24 hours and is understandably terrified and excited about it. If I saw '13' that often I would be terrified and excited too and want to make a massive post about it. Actually I daren't even type any more in case I type that number again by mistake and inadvertently give myself a similar at-work erection over it.

Not deja vu if you recognise this. Injust cut n paste it every time one of these "coincidence" threads appers. smile

1981 and my best friend and me decided to jack in our jobs and head down to Australia through Africa, India, Nepal and East Asia.

We first flew to Cairo. Our plane was delayed and we found ourselves wandering the city centre, after midnight, knocking on hostel doors trying to find a place to sleep for the night. Eventually, we discovered a small hotel. The owner told us that he had a three bed room with two free beds. We could have it if the present occupant agreed to share. He popped upstairs to talk to the chap and returned to tell us that we could share the room.

The chap who was already in the room turned out to be an American who was just travelling the World by himself. A really good bloke, we spent a couple of days in his company and then moved on.

Nine months later, my friend and I had reached India. We'd travelled by train from Bangalore up to Delhi and were wandering up the Pahar Gunj searching for a place to stay. Everywhere seemed to be full. Except one small guest house. The owner told us that he had a room. But we would have to share with the present occupier. We agreed and we were led up to the room.

Where we found sitting on one of the beds our American friend from Cairo.

So ghosts are tied into a specific building? When that building goes they do what? Die??? confused
Why can't they take up residence in the replacement building. Or move next door?

Who makes up these ghostly rules anyway? Honestly, the whole thing is utter nonsense.

I think I'm quite open minded, but my mind isn't so far open that my brains have fallen out. Ghosts, fairies, gods, a load of old bunkum.

Sorry, are you saying that some totally unlinked events and random numbers led to the stock market collapse?

What if you had been sat in row 14 and table number no.14? Or what if it had been 13667 on the Police report?

666 isn't even a particular number of significance as I believe in the Bible (as in older versions prior to English) it mentions 616.

Are you one of those people that are amazed when you meet someone who shares a birthday with you?

Well absolutely! Also with the abundance of CCTV and almost everyone carrying a camera these days its strange that there is still not one single definitive and provable image.

Same with these 'big cats' - lots of dashcams being fitted so I await the footage of when these huge cats 'ran out in front of me' or 'stopped and stared at my car'.

On this thread we've had - lots of Victorian ghosts because the buildings still exist...but wait here come some Roman soldiers marching through. So, where are the ghosts of cavemen or people that died last year in a brand new home?

We've also had the ghost of someone's Labrador..so why not the ghost of all the rats that have died over the years or birds?

The coat-rack in my office fell over a few weeks ago! I work in an Edwardian building and the coat rack has never done this before. Do you think the ghost of an Edwardian is upset because they are converting the building next door to offices?!? Oh my god it happened on the 13th of December as well....no sorry it was the 14th...but the stock market is going down...coincidence?

My encounter was in 2001. I doubt my phone even had a camera. Rest assured, if it happens again, I'll be snapping away like a crocodile on meth. wink

At least big cats aren't a supernatural phenomena. It is possible that a puma has escaped from captivity.

But ghosts....FFS, get a grip.

I think most people here are just indulging OP with coincidences, tales and spooky happenings for the thread, at least I was. I don't really take them for more than what they are - coincidences and odd things happening - thats another debate entirely.

What if the sightings of big cats are actually people seeing the ghosts of big cats?

Cats that the Romans used to keep here, in Victorian times.

My office just got colder...maybe I'm on to something here...after all it is nearly 11:11.
