Stubbornly stuck around the 83.5 to 85kg mark.

Have finished my initial stint of basic weight training and moved on to a.new program which is more intense and more frequent, so I'm hoping a few weeks of that will kick things back into gear.

I badly need to get on this train. I've always been a big lad, but things are frankly fking stupid now and really impacting my life. I'm 34, and 6' 6" but I've ballooned to a horrendous 32 stone.

I eat a lot, I have a massive sweet tooth and I'm a very lazy / naturally sedentary person. I work night shifts in IT support (8pm - 8am) on a 4 on, 4 off basis.

The whole WFH thing during covid has been amazing for our finances but I end up raiding the cupboards during the night.

At that weight at 34, you really do. Start with diet, makes a huge difference (see Funk on here for a real success story)- MyFitnessPal App is fantastic for giving you a daily calorie target and logging what you eat- takes away the guesswork.

I honestly don't deserve any plaudits at the moment - I've gone very much the wrong direction and now have a lot of work to re-do. My problem was the third lockdown; I really struggled during it and much to my shame am back up to 153kg. I'm really finding it hard to get my head back in the game and it shows how easily things can slide.

However, I know I can do it once my head's straight. The method works when you apply and stick to it though, that's for sure.

For those who struggle with a sweet tooth and cravings, my recommendation would be to move to a low carb diet. Cravings are often as a result of insulin levels that continue to get spiked by eating and continually snacking and eating (mainly processed) carbohydrates.

Now imagine how easy dieting would be without the cravings and feeling satisfied, for most this is what a low carb diet results in. I personally suffer when I eat a high (processed) carb diet and gain weight easily. I also find my cravings increase massively and I tend to get hungry a lot. I'm not a scientist, doctor nor do I have any qualifications in nutrition however I've felt for some years that some of us are genetically less capable of eating a moderate/high carb diet and functioning well. I know when I've had my blood taken my blood sugar levels creep close to the diabetic level if I've been eating a high carb diet.

When I eat lower carbs I lose my crazy hunger, cravings and find it easy to maintain a lower body fat %, actually really easy and I feel great! There's a huge body of work that demonstrates lower carb diets have massively positive effects on our health, fat levels and some research shows they can also act as an anti-depressant. I know my psychological state improves as does my cognitive function under ketosis (zero carb instead of low carb).

So my view is that our hormones (insulin, cortisol and various others) play a massive part in our bodyfat percentage, health and psychological states.

I also consider intermittent fasting to be very important for health and fat-loss.

For anyone that feels they are in the same boat as me, I'd encourage you to consider it and I think the books on the subject by the likes of Dr Mosley (Famous TV doctor) are worth a read. I don't exactly follow all of his stuff but he advocates a mediterranean diet which is proven to be very healthy as part of his approach.

The below page is about his 800 Fast diet which incorporates intermittent fasting and a low carb/calorie combo for rapid fat loss, I've included it in this post as it maybe interesting to some.

What I find astonishing is that whenever I fall off the wagon, I seem to land face first in cake...

Re the low carb post above, I agree. Everyone has a different carbohydrate tolerance and finding the right level is the trick.

Also recognising not all carbs are equal from a GI standpoint and also that because everyone is different, some carbs may promote a sharp blood sugar spike in one person and less of a response from another.

Watching what you eat is great, but you need to be aware of the impact things have, good and bad and factor that in too. There is no one size fits all diet, just like there are no one size fits all trousers.

ETA, I've now completed a six week streak of gym 3x per week minimum. Very pleased with the consistency and it's showing in my physique, such as it is. I'm also bloddy knackered. That's the good thing about sporadic training. Lots of rest... Food has also been better, but the scales refuse to budge. I'm definitely changing shape though, so the improvements in the mirror make up for the lack on numerical change.

I've been keeping up the walking, not been doing so well on the cycling or the snacks front. I dipped below 90kg for a while but have slipped back over. Reading about low carb diets it looks like I could make some big reductions in my carb intake without too much difficulty. Dry roasted peanuts are my biggest weakness!

Been stuck at 84kg for a few weeks, so stuck with the diet but increased the intensity of my workouts slightly and it's showing signs of success which is good.

Downside is I had my work health check last week and they rang me to explain the results. Short version, not good, call the GP. So, I'll be focusing harder on the types of fat I'm consuming because I still firmly believe a protein and fat based diet is better for me than a carb heavy one.

I was in the previous one but am such a loser that I didn't even complete the year!! hehe

I lost 5 stone in total between July 2019 and July 2020 by walking a lot (Yes, you did read that correctly!). I hate swimming, don't have a bike and was too fat to run although I did manage to complete Couch25k in the summer. That weight loss got me down from 22 stone 8 lbs to 17 stone 8 lbs but since July, I have struggled a lot with lockdown, willpower, not walking due to two slightly dodgy knees and lack of time.

I now stand, and sit, at 22 stone 4 pounds having put more than four and a half stone on in just six short months. It's that pathetic that I'm almost proud of it.

Please count me in as the motivation might help me out a little.

Good luck everybody!
Back again for another crack, third time this year. I'm visiting this thread almost as much as my local bakery at the moment... hehe

No point going through my story again, it's on the quoted post above. Only difference is, I've put on another stone since January so now stand, and sit, at 23 stone 5 pounds. cry

Mate, you need to address what is adding to the weight loss. Simply not moving is not the whole story. Best of luck.

Thanks for your good wishes, Worsy. clap

Walking has been, and will always be, the answer to my question. As mentioned previously, it's the easiest solution and therefore the one I'm most likely to end up doing in order to lose weight. Of course, it has to be combined with eating sensibly otherwise it's not going to have as good an effect as it could. I lost 5 stone in 12 months in 2019/20 before lockdown came & that was down to walking 1,000 miles in a year, that's literally less than an hour a day on average. Given the fact that I can be walking on a railway path within a minute of leaving the front door and it's a no brainer; no gym membership fees, no expensive equipment, just me & a pair of walking boots.

Going forward, I'm going to address other areas of my life such as lack of money, a house that really needs sorting out organisationally and a general sense of gloom because they all add up to making me feel censored and therefore eating too much!

My journey has been 3 years long and started at 118kg (18st 8lb). I am now 80kg (12st 8lb). My waist size has gone down from 46in to 33in. I reached my target 12 weeks ago and have maintained 80kg since.

I have achieved this by counting calories, minimal but regular exercise and reduced (sometimes zero) alcholhol intake. I have drunk low calorie tonic water. I presently limit my calorie intake to 1200 per day on average including drinks.

I have replaced all my clothes and it feels great to be able to dress smartly and comfortably.

I shall stick around to make sure I continue with my efforts to maintain my weight and fitness for the foreseeable future. My methods will, I'm sure, not work for everyone but the basic theory goes like this 'calories in minus calories out equals surplus calories which will eventually lead to overweight'. I've found my balance at 1200 calories per day, but yours will be different, probably more as I'm old and fairly inactive.

This post is not to brag but to try to support others by confirming that's it is possible to reach your goals with a little dedication. I have fallen off the wagon a couple of times over the last three years but this place has really helped me to quickly climb back on, so many thanks to everyone for that.

Please feel free to PM me if you want a copy of the calorie counting spreadsheets I've developed. These are in 'Numbers' but can be converted to 'Microsoft Excel'.

Good luck to all ...

Didn't realise this thread was here...

I have been WFH since March 2020 (like many here), and decided to use the time I am normally stuck in traffic to get fitter, I am about 6 foot and have gone from about 14.5 stone (March 2020), down to about 12.5 stone now.

Only problem is I can't go out on the pull now cry

Although, I can genuinely say I like long walks now rofl

Finally shifted the scales - they showed an 82.xx yesterday. I've not got three weeks with the missus and kids off at the Grandparents, so I'm throwing myself into healthy eating and exercise with zero distraction - got to take advantage when I can!

Ok back on to this as all weight lost at the start of the year was put back on, I went from 102kg down to 99k up to some point in February and put it all back on, but now down to 98 which seems to have coincided with starting a new bootcamp group which is either 2 or 3 times per week depending on work patterns and I'm also getting out before work to walk the dogs which is circa 4-5 miles per morning.

Diet is still good, however booze had crept up to a daily event, which I want to knock on the head during the week.

After being dug out a little on the tattoo thread for my love handles i have been directed here..

I have some weight to lose. I used to live a very active lifestyle 18 months ago before having 1st child. Up at 5am Gym 6 days a week, had some online coaching around 3 years ago and got into what i felt was decent nick. Now im overweight, irritabe, slow, living a sedentary lifestyle.

Diet is bad, sleep is bad, I work from home and do the nursery run morning and night.

I used to train mornings because thats what worked for me, now i only have the evenings at my disposal, found a new gym a 5 minute walk from my house and intend to join up in the next few weeks.

Any tips on how im going to keep my energy levels high enough to go and train at 7-8pm each night when im up at 5.30-6am ?

Diet will be corrected after my holiday. I play football on Monday nights, hopefully getting back into the weights will refresh me. I did find i got pretty bored of it after training for 2-3 years consistently but a year or so off has had some real negative impacts on my physical and mental wellbeing.
