Anyone know which muscles are used when depressing the clutch? e.g. quads, hip flexors, etc?

Please not smart answers such as 'leg muscles' or 'None, I have an auto (and wear womens underwear)'. smile

If it's light, the just the calf muscle.

If it's a triple plate, then probably calf and quadracep.

An interesting question in a way. The Hip, knee and ankle are mainly involved. Calf muscles are contracted to plantar flex the foot (point the toes) and the Quadriceps muscles are used to extend (straighten) the knee so that the foot pushes the pedal whilst at the same time the Hamstring muscles (which are on the back of the thigh and normally act to bend the knee) also contract to extend (push the leg down into the seat) the hip. You could break it down even more into the specific muscles of the calf and foot, and also add in the muscles around the hip, groin and lower back which all contract to stabilise the body to let one leg work. Ok, perhaps not too interesting after all, particularly when you appreciate that for every group of muscles which act on one side of the joint to bring about a movement, eg point the toes, the opposite group of muscles will be acting to control the extent and range of the movement. So, in effect, in terms of the lower limb muscles, all of them will be used to a degree. smile

Thanks for the few sensible answers. The post is related to back problems (possibly due to muscle imbalance).

For those of you that have taken the piss, well I do find it quite sad that you have sufficient time on your hands to 'contribute' to a post that you have no interest in at all. I suppose I can take some comfort in the fact that given the number of members Pistonheads have, only a small minority of idiots have taken this route.
