I read on twitter that Max is now picking a fight Villeneuve:

"Villeneuve should watch his language when he says that I might kill someone, 'cause he killed someone himself in Melbourne 2001" referring to the crash where debris from the car killed a marshall.

Damon Hill tweeted: "Oh dear. Getting very messy"

Poor kid's gone from being the second coming and someone talked about as a future multiple world-champion, to being the embarrassing teenage kid that someone has brought along to a grown-ups party - in the space of a couple of weeks.

To all those asking if he was ready for a top seat in F1 I (still) think the answer is no!

It will be some time before that nasty dig is forgotten. He's a young kid but even so.

Very poor form.

Max needs to get a check on this sort of thing right now or else it will damage him big time, regardless of how good he is in a car without anyone trying to overtake him.

Further proof that children should not be allowed to compete in top level competition.

Maturity and not just ability should be judged.

Vertw@tten would be better off making his mistakes with his peers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4qEdi0doGs

Thing is, I'm fairly sure his thug of a father will be encouraging this current behaviour.

Extremely poor form. He will start losing his fan base with comments like that. His arrogance is getting the better of him.
A better retort from him would have been to remind Villenueve how much he enjoyed crashing and how dangerous that was.

I was wondering that. if Jos is anything like my Dad he'll be getting a bit un-PC in his old age and you could expect such a tactless retort in private. Max was what, three years old in 2001? So you can be sure he didn't remember that himself. Maybe he thought it'd be funny / smart to repeat his Dad's remark in public.

yes

Its not just the rules and etiquette of racing you learn in lower formula.

His 5 minutes will come around quickly if he doesn't use his or someone elses brain to filter comments like that; we lament the ubiquity of the modern pr driver and the loss of the ballsy characters of old but thats pretty dumb, flippant remarks about deaths in motorsport are like peado jokes in a mothering group.

"Hij moet een beetje opletten met zijn uitspraken dat er iemand doodgaat, want hij heeft zelf iemand doodgereden. Hij moet naar zichzelf kijken. Ik vind wat hij zegt niet respectvol naar de familie van de overleden marshall", verwees Verstappen naar de crash van de Canadees in 2001 in Melbourne, waarbij een marshall achter de hekken omkwam nadat hij door brokstukken van Villeneuve's bolide was geraakt.

Williams look quick. Probably the closest challenger to Mercedes on the long runs but Mercedes look to be on another planet. Tyres are lasting reasonably well too, so 1-stoppers could be the order of the day instead of being an alternate strategy. Not looking good...

On Super Soft I'd put Merc>Ferrari>Red Bull/Williams>Force India>McLaren>Haas>Manor/Renault/Sauber

On Soft Mercedes>Williams>Ferrari>Red Bull.

We shall see if this order holds up in qualifying.

Thanks for that. I did wonder if I'd been a bit hasty in my criticism. I know that in the world of instant communication it is easy to make a fool of yourself with a hasty retort. Perhaps Villeneuve's comment hurt him. Perhaps he was a bit of a hero of his. Will he apologise?

Mind you, Villeneuve didn't set a very high standard of sensible driving, although more of a danger to himself than others. He was awesome in Spa. Great fun to watch.

Wow, if Max said that then he is totally out of order IMO. This kid clearly has no respect for anyone, it is almost like he is going out of his way to make himself disliked. There is a fine line between developing a 'tough' image and just having your competitors hate you.... and I don't think he is getting the balance right at the moment.

Yes - the Dutch version is much less damning. And Villeneuve can be a prize tw@t at times with his comments. I liked him as a driver, but he's been very tiresome in the last few years. But why even bring this up. Just point out that Villenueve was a pretty good crasher if you need to say anything at all.

Max was clearly rattled in Spa. He's going through his development. He'll make more mistakes but he's going to need to learn to internalise a bit more.

As to the comment on Jos being a thug. Perhaps someone can point me to some reference material. I've never found him to be too bad ...
