Personalised Number Plates - Naff or Cool?
Discussion
I have always been against vanity plates as my exposure to them was always people spelling BOSSY on their range rover or hiding the year of their car. Poorly spelt names also annoy me.
However now I'm on the brink of buying a plate for my car.
My car cost two bags of sand and I've seen a plate around 500 that is as follows AL54 EXG - not hiding the age of my car, names spelt correctly and I wouldn't put it in a silly font.
I never truly had a real desire to keep my old cars, they've always been temporary bits of fun metal and the cosmetics were neglected but the more I keep my current car the more the reg being a random string of letters annoys me.
I used to be black and white about vanity plates. You're either for or against, you can't have exceptions because then you have double standards.
Vanity was something that I always saw as an undesired trait. But my intent with a vanity plate is not to boast about anything. Its to give this car an Identity that's reflective of me. What better way than my name and the age of the car.
I would like to think I'll be the last owner of this car and it might seem a bit naff caring about something so cosmetic over this and spending a large sum of money on it when I could be saving it for tougher times which in the current world seems likely.
Then again I should probably not think so much, buy it and be happy with it. People spend a lot more money on a lot less.

I've a fundamental problem with personalised plates since they are essentially vainglorious. I mean, what do they do? It's just like someone thought "I'm so proud of myself that I cant bear to have number plates on my car that show I'm just a normal member of society and not someone really special".
But if I could afford a Lambo or Ferrari; would I put personalised plates on it?
Not sure.![hehe](/inc/images/hehe.gif)

You also argue about that for anything other than a mini/2CV or a Ford S-Max. Between those cars you've got everything you NEED in a car anything else is just vanity/insecurity/willy-waving...But if I could afford a Lambo or Ferrari; would I put personalised plates on it?
Not sure.

They make the owner happy and those with small brains unhappy. But if I could afford a Lambo or Ferrari; would I put personalised plates on it?
Not sure.

A simple yes or no will mark your arguments as hypocrisy.

Your stereotypical pre judgement is priceless.
And most telling.
Needless to say it reveals more about you than me.

Agree.
But clearly we were talking about 'smaller' vanity narcissist plates breaking the minimum gap rules between the numbers/letters and edge of the plate.

I have two. One is a fairly nondescript XXX NNN plate that I bought as a reminder of the old scheme of things when the XX51XXX etc plates started to be introduced. It happens to be a Bucks (where I live) reg.
I then fancied a plate once carried by a Routemaster bus (I have a fondness for these and even more of one for its predecessor the RT). I took the (crappy) pic in Brixton bus garage in 2002/3 while the bus was still in service.

Or is it possibly something you just made up to suit your agenda.![laugh](/inc/images/laugh.gif)

Really?

You do realise than the vast majority of cars are able to exceed the speed limit?
So by your reasoning the vast majority of drivers are therefore criminals.

I'd say the evidence is irrefutable, otherwise you'd be driving a Honda Jazz. Feel free to make comments on other people's choices but when you bring the 'law ' into things you just make yourself look (more) stupid. Yes, most drivers break the law. Sorry that's news for you. If you cannot see how ridiculous your point is there really is no point discussing it further.
![rolleyes](/inc/images/rolleyes.gif)
Tell you what why don't you write to every car manufacturer who produces a vehicle which can exceed 70 mph and tell them their vehicles are ( by your dumbfounded logic ) highly illegal and being sold to criminals and should be banned just because they have the potential to exceed the speed limit.
Oh yes and do please let us know how you get on.
