Let me tell you a tale, dearest O.P.

DRLs are there to protect the pedestrians of this land. Before now, all pedestrians were either blind, or unaware of the existence of the automobile. A great many people met their doom by walking in front of said machinery, completely oblivious to the moving metal object that preceded their fate. Ney, they were not even able to hear the sound of the instrument labelled "Horn" and that the flashing lights that were presented to them before stepping out were, alas, too little too late.

Something had to be done and a committee was formed. There was much discussion until....

"Lights!!" someone (who we now know as 'Genius') exclaimed. But less, he was challenged. "Cars already have lights" came the retort by the one we call "The Defender".

But Genius was not to be defeated. "Permanent lights!!" he declared with a sure fire victory, clasping his fist and punching in the air.

"errrmm.... Volvo?" laughed The Defender in defiance.

"No no no no no", replied Genius - already two steps ahead after gazing at the brightly lit Christmas tree at the foot of the table - for the meeting was held at the festive season. "Bright light! Bright light! Bright light!".

Genius then became known as Mogwai and so the tale of the DRL began. And it then became law and the goodness of the land rejoiced that the people were now able to see moving objects.

Ah, BUT i mentioned the exact same thing on yet another DRL moan thread and i was shot down, apparently DRL's that are filament based lights (so this fitted generally to "lower" spec models) are OK, its only the LED ones that cause certain Plebs an issue.

Fanny lights are not compulsory in this country - they only have to be there, not ON!

Sweet, bruv, innit?

Seriously? "Fanny lights"? That's all you have to add to the debate?

WTF do you know about the DRLs fitted to current cars anyway. In another thread you say there is a way to turn them off. You sound very confident of this. If they were meant to be turn off-able, then there would be a switch for the purpose, no? Or an entry in the handbook entitled 'Turning off your DRLs', maybe. But there isn't. Because you are not meant to 'turn them off'. By which I assume you mean 'illegally modify' the vehicle lighting system in order that it no longer functions as intended. Construction and Use Regs, and RVLRs not familiar to you?

Why do you detest them so much? If I allowed myself to think about it too hard, I might develop a pathological hatred of Smurfs dangled from recovery eyes, or plastic flowers attached to dashboards. Perhaps I might be consumed by the desire to burn BMWs with their drivers inside, or to shoot MLMs from motorway gantries. The fact is I don't dwell on these things too much, despite the fact that I find them mildly irritating at best. Life is too short to worry about finding a way to switch off the DRLs on my new car. Hell, I haven't even programmed the voice-dialling for the phone, or worked out what all the buttons on the stereo do yet. Get over yourself. All new cars from volume manufacturers will now be delivered with automatic DRLs fitted. When you turn the key, or push the start button, they will light up, and they won't go out again unless you've got the 'big' lights on. If you don't come to your senses about this subject, you're gonna put yourself into an early grave, dude. DRLs are here to stay, and every 6 months a big new batch of cars will appear on the roads with them, and a constant flow of 'dead' cars without DRLs will be scrapped. The percentage of DRL equipped cars on the road will rise and rise, and you, friend, would be advised to heed the following advice:

"Lord grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can, and
the wisdom to know the difference."

-- Saint Francis of Assisi

And by Serenity, I don't think he meant Nathan Fillion's spaceship, dude.

DO WE REALLY NEED ANOTHER FLIPPING DRL THREAD?
I don't know why so many people piss their pants over DRL
if you are getting dazzled by a pair of 20w LEDs in the day, i would suggest you avoid looking anywhere near the sky

20 Watt LEDs, surely not? That would probably be equivalent to ~100W halogen lamps.
