RE: Audi R8 Performance: PH Trade-off!
Discussion
It would be the GT-R for me preferably a Litchfield LM20 or at least a Track Pack GT-R now some say the GT-R's don't have character, I've found they do they also have an exhaust note dependent on what system you use, they're also every bit as much of a driver's car as the R8.
If you had to go N/A then it would have to be Gallardo.

GT-R for me
I can’t think of two cars that more perfectly epitomise the difference between people who buy the badge and those who don’t.
Just my opinion no offence meant
But you're choosing the Nissan based on badge? I can’t think of two cars that more perfectly epitomise the difference between people who buy the badge and those who don’t.

The whole appeal of the R8, at least for me, is that it's "just" an Audi. The badge doesn't weigh it down one way or the other; much like a VW badge on a Golf, it's classless. People don't care, it's just an Audi. Rich people don't care, poor people don't care. It's worth what it's worth. The Nissan is all a bit crass for me, still. It's got a whiff of "little man syndrome" about it... It's not the cars fault, it's just people always feel the need to bring up the fact it's a Nissan as some sort of badge of honour... Ultimately it's just led to reverse badge snobbery, which just as bad as the regular kind. A shame.
I love R8's and I love GTR's.
Earlier this year I had to decide which one to buy, I choose a manual V10 R8 and haven't regretted it for a second
R8 won due to its manual box, engine note, interior and exterior looks. The only thing I hate about my R8 is the ancient ICE and the fact you can't upgrade it without major work.

Interesting comparison, obviously they are not really directly like-for-like, but I take the point that there is similar performance on offer for half the dosh. As someone who is used to motoring on a shoestring budget, I'll always chose the bang-per-buck option, so GTR for me. But then, if I had deep enough pockets to even consider buying and running a R8, then there would be so much else that I would be considering...
The article mentions the Audi having a superior badge reputation - I'd actually say the opposite, that the GT-R brand has more excitment and alure to me, recalling the Skyline GTR lineage. The Audi badge and repetitive family style of their cars is so ubiquitous on British roads that it manages to make a mid-engined V10 supercar seem less special to me, it's just a German premium saloon car brand.

Quite close to home this one. My XFR is going due to more mileage and I've got 2 years to save for something special for my 50th, the old shape R8 is top of the list atm unless I can stretch to a 911 Turbo 997.2.
I admit to the shame that image has a place on my list of desirable points, all be it not top spot. I really like the idea of the extra seats in the Nissan but as a 50 year old I'm not sure I wouldn't feel a touch self concious in a GTR. I do think every journy in the R8 would be an event, not so the Nissan but I think they are an amazing piece of machinery at the price. Clincher is how much it used to cost me to keep my EVO 6 on the road, not sure of the R8s reliabilty/running costs but the GTRs scare me a bit.

My R8 has a 23K S-Tronic gearbox replaced this year, under warranty thankfully but I would not run one without that.I admit to the shame that image has a place on my list of desirable points, all be it not top spot. But you're using the GT-R badge, and not the Nissan badge in your scenario. How come you've not used the "R8" or "R/RS" badge in the Audi situation. You have said Audi are a premium saloon car brand....well Nissan are....well, average all-round family hatchbacks and SUVs, no?The article mentions the Audi having a superior badge reputation - I'd actually say the opposite, that the GT-R brand has more excitment and alure to me, recalling the Skyline GTR lineage. Not that there is anything remotely wrong with that, just curious why you've taken the best bit of the Nissan and the worst of the Audi to skew the view a bit, if that makes sense?

I see what you're saying, it's just my overall perception of the way the cars are branded taking both the make and model into account, others will no doubt see it differently. Not that there is anything remotely wrong with that, just curious why you've taken the best bit of the Nissan and the worst of the Audi to skew the view a bit, if that makes sense?
I wonder why so many people care about image. If a car drives well and does what you want who cares who makes it. I personally think the GTR has quite a legendary "image" and no one would fault you for choosing one.
Hell, I drive a 20 year old FD Mazda RX-7 twin turbo because I like it. Sure, it's considered a pretty car but almost everyone (even non-car people) know about its fragile engine. But I drive it rather than say an Evo, Supra, GTR, or something German simply because I like the car. I don't really care what others think of it.

I hear what you're saying, but us petrolheads who drive around in retro classic cars are a very small minority. To a lot of people, apparent badge prestige, a new reg number, and going up the motorway sliproad relatively quickly in reasonable comfort are seemingly the primary qualities.Hell, I drive a 20 year old FD Mazda RX-7 twin turbo because I like it.
