Oh dear I seem to have upset some people as I don't agree that bikes are gods gift to the world and that they are the perfect tool for every job.
Dear lord, is that really what you think has happened? If so, I genuinely pity your lack of self-awareness.

I like driving as much as anyone here but then I turned 24 and realised I could spend a few hundred quid on training and buy a fast bike.

I now have a bike that is faster than most cars but slower than a lot of other bikes. On any given decent road I’ve been on, I think I’d be faster in my car (even though it is relatively slow) but I have a hell of a lot more fun on my bike. Maybe with a bit more experience I’d be faster on my bike but whatever. Fun fact: my car and bike share manufacturer and colour. Not sure if obsession or coincidence.

On the other hand, love going for a blast out in the car when I haven’t done so in a couple of weeks.

We should all just agree we like going fast, whether it is on two wheels or four.

P.S. Bikes are faster.

ETA: you don’t need ‘perfect’ weather to enjoy a bike, but dry and above eight degrees is preferable. Still prefer commuting on the bike, whatever the weather.

i like the way when things are going well "before silly speeds are reached"both parties give a nod to each other............anybody had it the other way where youve been a dick while dicing with your new found "buddy", cocked it up andfound yourself in a hedge or dtich thinking youve been a right twonk?

Did youre new bro turnaround and see if you was ok? or vice versa? or even if you showed him or her your driving prowess did they lose their rag with you and it all turned a bit "fackin shaking"?
Had a guy thinking he was billy big balls on his bike, can’t remember if it was an R1 or R6 either way quick kit.
Said I’d have a play on a well known bikers A road.
So off we toddle, bit of dual carriageway getting there and he is toying with me, I’m not even bothering at this point as I’m only in a standard Subaru Forester and know the bike is twice as fast there. Get onto the A road with me in front and off we go.
I dropped him out of sight within a mile or so. Stopped to let him catch up. He didn’t arrive so went back and found he had binned it on the first proper corner.
Luckily just cuts n bruises for him but bike was fked as it hit a post. Made sure he was ok and gave him a lift home very much tail between his legs.

Well, if you're going to get all Cool Story on us, let me give you a true one.

I own 2 bikes: Big Fast Bike and Little Commuter Bike and in the recent warm weather I decided to take Little Commuter Bike for a longer run, mainly because I was feeling guilty about only ever using it in town.

Now, as previously mentioned, LCB would lose a dual carriageway dust up to any of the current crop of GTIs. Indeed, by bike standards, it could barely pull a greasy stick out of a dog's bottom. So I was going fairly slow and, sure enough, on a dual carriageway I was passed by a BMW M4 travelling at full chat and several leptons (and my, it sounded glorious!).

The BM shot into the distance and disappeared around the next roundabout. I eventually arrived at the same and pootled round, exiting onto a single carriageway (one lane in each direction) road. I came around the first bend and there was the Beemer – now playing “Tail end Charlie” to a little queue of slow moving cars all stuck behind a caravan.

We came around the next bend onto a short straight whereupon I overtook the whole lot in one go and carried on my merry way. It was sort of overtake that's easy on any bike (even one as slow as the LCB) but near impossible in any car.

So yeah, yeah some cars are faster than some bikes on some roads or some tracks some of the time. But in the real world, where it really counts, pretty much all bikes are faster than pretty much all cars pretty much all of the time.

So basically you was on a pooter and a car came past which was stuck behind a queue and you rode past. Cool story bro 👍🏼

And even if that is true, it still isn’t why I (and many others) love bikes.... much more to it than just pace. In a forum where the vast majority regret the lack of feel in mainstream modern cars (some being worse than others)... bikes are the total opposite, constant feel for what’s going on and very direct links from your inputs to the machines behaviour.

Oh yeah, and I love cars, some fast ones and some slow ones. I wouldn’t find it easy to decide what to give up between fun cars and fun bikes... Ultimately, I have more outright fun on a bike. But I can have fun more often in a car. I’ll stick with both for now.

This basically seems to have turned into a thread where if you don't agree that bikes are the best thing ever and you dare to say as much you get instant verbal retribution and called a liar if you happen to have an experience where a car bettered a bike.

Really pointless topic in my opinion. in my thoughts bikes are for fun when the conditions allow and cars are much better modes of transport while still being fun and in some cases basically as fast. Also how often do you go down any a or b road at the sort of speeds where this debate actually comes into importance. For me taking a b road at 10/10ths is a rare event and better on your own. Who cares if a car or bike will arrive 10 seconds before the other.

I'm not sure I agree. I believe a Turbo S would be able to sustain a higher average speed in any conditions, cross country, than a litre sports bike.
beer we don't have to agree but I've come up against a fair few cars when on my S1000RR they don't stay in the mirrors for to long, in the wet yes the rolls are reversed but in the dry the Turbo S can't stay with the bike, did you watch the clips I put up?

In the high speed stuff the bikes & supercars have very similar corner speed but the acceleration & the bike having more tarmac to play with swings it in the bikes favour.

As I said race cars beat race bikes pretty much every time but on the road it swings in the other direction.

For example the Porsche will hit 60mph quicker than the bike 8/10ths of a second from a standing start but by 100mph it's 3/10ths behind, in roll on it worse as the bike is gone less inertia etc, I will say again this is all dependent on the rider/drivers skill set.
Good points... also, did anyone read that article in Autocar a few weeks back where they did a 911 Turbo vs Smart 4/2 cross country race? The Porsche only won by a few minutes and averaged just a few MPH more than the Smart car. You just cant exploit the full performance of any road car on British Roads....

I haven't ride a bike since i move back to england, but I have been riding GS and retro for some years
it is just the road condition, the huge temp difference in day and night during british summer put me off, as well as how much cheaper is to own a car in UK compare to my home country
I think what bike attract me is the barebone feeling, you can feel the wind, the rain, and feel so much more than driving a car. Yeah I have drove a MX-5, Z4 with the top open, but it just dont give you the same feeling of freedom and rawness
Bike is not more convenience than car, probably even worse, but bike for me is like a beliefs, a spirit
I tend to drive faster in car than bike, probably because the sense of safety and the more potential in curvy B road, driving in those road with a good handling light weight car is equally fun as riding a bike. However, I would say bike and car are two different driving/riding pleasure. there are boring car so as boring bike like 125cc commuter and diesel family saloon, but there are also retro bike, GS bike, hypermoto, and roadster, classic car, light weight coupe etc.

That's the whole point, in the real world, most bikes will be faster than any car. On my 25 minute commute with a fair amount of traffic, I often see the same cyclist, he is obviously a pretty good cyclist, has all the gear on but he is on a pushbike!

Quite often he will keep pace or be ahead of the cars, he will fall behind on the straights but will just catch up and filter pass at any lights or roundabouts. A car could have 600 BHP but it is not going to be much faster than that 0.2 BHP bike in town and city commuting.

The Vespa scooter. Probably in a pastel colour with matching open face helmet.
