2 complaints and a ban smacks of PC gone mad and a hidden agenda.
What difference is there between an advert showing car related action and a film based on fast or spectacular driving?
Perhaps the car makers should make "films" instead of ads?
I am sure that people are more likely to copy film related action as it supposedly portrays a real life situation than an advert that is clearly set out to be a selling device.
The 1960's Italian Job should be banned as it encourages some outrageous driving!

You beat me to it David, this is EXACTLY the first thought that entered my mind. Its amazing the power of a few imbeciles versus the multitude AND majority of many who found no offense in said advertisement.

I seriously get so mad thinking about this I want to make it known that if I knew who the people were who complained they would be forced to go into hiding and live in fear for the rest of their lives for their stupidity.
Gosh. Thanks for 'making it known'. I'm sure they'll keep their heads down.

I was so upset reading this thread and how the power of a few mindless grannies can change lives that I phoned a friend and popped over for a drink. The whisky decanter had no health warning on it and I am now suing my ex-friend after I got done for drunken driving. Silly fool that he is - I mean, how was I to know that the amber liquid was alcoholic? redcard

Is this a joke? Is it really that bad over there? Did the Nazis somehow win the war and take over Britain under our noses?
Aaaaand, Godwin!

The ad was still running before Skyfall, last night. I think it's amusing that it was banned, before watching a film mostly about car/bike chases and shooting people.

Just so it's clear - it isn't the two complaints that result in the ban, it's the contravention of the (silly) rules.

1,000,000 can complain but it won't make a difference if the ad is in line with the rules.

Everyone's ire is going the wrong way here.

Not happy about the ban? Lobby the powers-that-be about their rules, not the Mary Whitehouses at home with a hotline to the powers-that-be.

I did, my complaint was posted earlier in this thread.

Not got anything to add but how depressing & also a little frightening. Who let these people run the world? Something really needs to be done about these losers that are in control of our lives.

People like the ones who complained about this advert (and those who write in to complain about any advert TBH) really make me laugh. Just how absolutely pathetic must their lives be that they feel the need to write in and complain about a TV advert? Are they REALLY that bad or offensive?! (No). Or are their lives just that empty and meaningless that they feel they must contribute to society by annoying others with this type of rubbish.

Toyota should have done what Clarkson & May did here in the first 1.20: http://www.topgear.com/uk/videos/tg-makes-a-vw-ad-...

As said above, the TV advert is ok for the GT86 as it doesn't contravene the rules. So you can still see it on TV. The advert that's been banned is the longer version that did contravene the rules.......plus you can still watch the banned one on the Internet in any event

What a load of s***.

I refuse to say anything else on the matter - the above remark is my response to all arguements in favour.

ASA said:
Dear Alex

As the body responsible for judging UK ads against the Advertising Codes, in particular making judgments on whether something is likely to be harmful, irresponsible or inappropriate, there will inevitably be times when people do not agree with our rulings.

The Codes, written by the advertising industry, are deliberately strict. They are designed to ensure ads do not contain anything likely to mislead, harm or offend and are prepared in a socially responsible way. The rules on motoring reflect these principles. I understand you have already read these, but for information you can find them here.

We do not play a numbers game. If an ad is found in breach of the rules it is in breach irrespective of how many people have complained about it. We consider the validity of the complaint and measure the ad against the Advertising Codes when assessing whether or not an ad is likely to be misleading, harmful or offensive. In the case of the Toyota ad, the ASA Council judged the ad to be irresponsible and that it condoned dangerous driving. If you have not already done so, you can read the ruling with the full details of how and why we reached our decision here.

If you wish to raise your concerns about our complaints and investigations process, in the first instance please write to: Miles Lockwood, Director of Complaints and Investigations, Advertising Standards Authority, Mid City Place, 71 High Holborn, London, WC1V 6QT.

I hope this is helpful.

Enquiries
Maybe you don't play a numbers game, but perhaps the fact 2 out of 65 million people are unhappy should tell you something about your regulations?

And rightly so too. Cars are not for having fun in. They are for getting from A to B in complete safety, and under the legal speed limits !!!

My Arse.

I just hope Toyota produce another advert taking the p1ss out of the stupid people who obviously complained.

We should all live in a boring world.
My sentiments precisely. What is even sadder, is that the ad does not really show anything outrageous, and the images are animation which corresponds to a fantasy not reality. Thank goodness we don't have as many nannies on this side of the pond.

Nope.

Do Ferrari, Maserati, Bentley, Jag, Lamborghini, Porsche, and Aston not advertise in the UK?
Not on TV.

bobberz said:
What about the print advertisements touting Jag's XK-RS' 0-62 time? Or are there different regulations for print ads?
Yep, different rules.

Rules for print ads:

Rules for broadcast ads:

Nissan got in trouble for 370Z posters emphasising that their car was quicker than the German competition:

It's all bks, frankly.
Wow, that's preposterous.

The way some people react on the speed/plod/law forum for doing 36mph i am not surprised of the end result.
Funny how Vauxhall can show an add of reckless and careless driving with cars dashing about waving coloured smoke out the window without a hint of a complaint .
I have no doubt if Lamborghini had an advert for there Lamborghini Aventador it would get banned on looks alone .

Russ Swift's driving in the 1988 Montego ad wouldn't go down too well now, would it?

Worth a look on youtube to see him park the Montego in a small space (sideways, by means of a handbrake turn) WTF has happened to fun?
