Hi, "ciao a tutti!" just coming from Autocar forum, it's quite strange seeing there all the threads with a locker...
I see there are some of renewed usernames, I would need some kind of conversion table if this goes on :-)
anyway the first impression is that PH forums are too huge for my tastes, but I'll try it.
On a serious note pick a few threads and get stuck in. The bargain basement thread is the best one smile

Apparently the tide of Autocar forum users completely overwhelmed the Pistonheads infrastructure today.
I, for one, welcome our Autocar reading, internet breaking overlords.

With all due respect to some of the comments here, trolls did not close Autocar down, and that is a fact. The worst trolling stopped after LA was banned so something happened in the period after LA took a long walk off a short pier. LA was banned here too, his trolling transferred to Autocar, you might not like it but that's a matter of fact and all you need to do is a simple search within the vaults of this site, I also recall that this was a point of debate at the Autocar forum but ignored. So trolling was not the issue, trolling is easy to deal with, and ignore.

What didn't stop was the incessant moaning about the site and, to a degree, the way it was run and that is likely to be the reason why it was eventually buried. Holder is clearly a stroppy sod, on an upward trajectory, who won't hear a word against his regime of pedantic micromanagement and a forum, with the personalities that were involved towards the end was the most likely way to bring the worst out in him, so all of you more vocal forumites need to front up and accept your part in the sites closure if you moaned, and didn't stop moaning, at at any time after the trolling stopped. In terms of a decent car forum, Autocar was appalling, it was laughable in fact.

In terms of the trolling, there were a number of you that didn't help, no names and no pack drill though, you clearly all knew better.

The point of this post is most certainly not to start a flame war, so knock yourselves out if you want to start one but I suspect it'll less tolerated here than it was at Autocar, the point is that there is a holier than thou attitude of a few people who didn't know when to STFU.

Cheers, happy posting.

You must learn the mx5 330d mapped and the BMW e36 e39 and e46 or maybe a forester turbo is the Answer to any questions you may have.

Also expect a bit of scaremongoring that every diesel ever made will have it's turbo and dpf blow to smithsrines as soon as the dsg box has been repaired after a bit of salt may or may not of been put down on the road

Eta also never mention you like anything from the vag stable. Or a BMW cross over you will be hunted and burned at the steak

Well, he's no doubt trolling somewhere else now, hassling someone else now, bigging up his film career somewhere else now, making up tales of derring do somewhere else now.

Wasn't the Mafia after him for a while?

How incredibly insensitive and hamfisted of the editor.

"The forum will be active until tomorrow afternoon, after which you’ll be able to read old posts, but not create new ones. We will retain the ability for users to post comments under news stories."

Should read;

"Ok, you've been coming here for 5 years but we're giving you 24 hours notice to all just p#ss off."

The BBC has been culling with venom for the past few years, and outsourcing moderation to a particularly nasty organisation called Tempero. If a provider doesn't have the will to keep something going and doesn't have thje respect for the users.. why start it in the first place?

Fair play to Club Heseltine for placing so much faith in Club Ted and growing it - well done PG too.

Cannot agree, Holder (as much as I think he has devalued the Autocar brand but that's a very different debate) has really copped for it in that forum, Hossack to a certain extent too. Why would Holder allow his reputation to be dragged through the mud on the regular basis that it was? The forum added nothing in the final analysis except provide a platform for a few of the dullest, humourless and opionated numpties in car forum land and after the trolling stopped it just became a continual whingefest.

Frankly, a few posters thought they had more influence than it turned out they did, thread after thread continued to descend into digs at the Autocar regime and the absolute failure of these people to recognise the ambience THEY created is breathtaking.

Pre-2006, the Autocar forum was good, it had the usual bores and anoraks and they formed their own forum post 2006 format changes, that forum splintered into 2 as well and both now function as private members clubs these days, and in that sense it works for them.

Change is inevitable, as is progress, Holder will continue his upward trajectory to motoring journo deity but will one day realise that those you kick on the way up are the same people who kick you on the way down, that said, I can't blame him for the decision taken in any way. There are a number of Autocar forum members who forced his hand and it is they that destroyed the forum. These people, quite clearly, shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a computer

REMF,

Fair do's, I don't know the history there - I think back to MaxPower.Com which flung itself in body and soul and invited angst! I do think that online engagement is seen as secondary and disposable because it is so immediate and 'here today/gone tomorrow'.

Thanks for the more considered and insightful comment than I was able to provide.

Hi Ginge, look its just my opinion and others may disagree and that's fine but I'll distill the issue further; there is a chain of thought that Autocar's forums were targeted by a troll ring, of which former Pistonheads member Los Angeles was the leader, it can't be proven but is subject to discussion at several troll forums I've seen. A few people at Autocar operated in the forums by ganging up on certain people where it was easy to get reactions from, another troll group punched back and for several years it was an unpleasant place to be, I suspect Autocar were taken in by the first group until it was obvious that Los Angeles was actually the real problem. When Los Angeles was banned, the trolling in that sense generally stopped but the first group then targeted the Autocar management by baiting them in the threads and here we are today, no Autocar forum. I dare them to come here and defend themselves, they won't because they'll risk being seen for what they are rather than the injured party that they currently purport to be, I include a number of people posting in this thread but it wouldn't be fair to name them overtly, they'll make asses of themselves in their own time.

All I'm going to say about this is be VERY CAREFUL about who worms their way into Pistonheads, it's a great site that's big enough to absorb this sort of crap hopefully.

MoFo,

Cheers for that, I remember LA here, from ages ago. There is an entirely new social-politik around online engagement, thats for sure! I run a messageboard with over 2,000,000 contributions, the dynamic is subtle, volatile (at times) and difficult to predict. The messageboard is the new pub.
