Exciting news.
I watched as much of the Le Mans 24 as I could this year, along with catching any of the ALMS, ELMS races where I could. Utterly hooked on it as a form of racing. I think it shows F1 up a little bit, at the 24 they seemed to be bombing around there at 10/10ths for 24 hours, especially in the GTE classes. In F1 we are being treated to a parade where they drive around at 6/10ths to preserve the tyres, or if its not tyres, they've gone so marginal on fuel to save weight that they're lapping at 8/10ths to actually finish.
I thought endurance races would be dull. They are not. Cannot wait to see Porsche bring it to Audi in 2014.
100% agree with every word of this ! I've always been a fan of endurance racing, attending the Silverstone 6hrs. LM24 last weekend got me totally hooked again. IMO it was far better than all the F1 races this season put together. I wish "Maaark" the best of luck in LMPs and hope he adds a LM24 win to CV someday. Mark Webber's Williams years provided a favourite anecdote about him, which says a lot about his determination, sense of justice and humour.
Like all top Aussie sportsmen, Webber is not immune to a few psychological games to boost his chances. And it was he who invented the nickname "Britney" - as in popstar Spears - for his young, blond and good-looking 2006 Williams team-mate Nico Rosberg, then in his first season.
Their final race together was in Brazil, where Rosberg rammed into the back of his team-mate's car on the opening lap, breaking the front nose of the German's car and Webber's rear wing.
Because it's relatively quick to replace a front wing replacement but a damaged rear means a likely retirement, the two were given a "priority Rosberg" message over the radio as they headed back to the pits.
Webber, cross at his team-mate's mistake, was determined to get back first and they began to race - really race - despite Rosberg suffering from lack of front grip and Webber struggling with the rear.
As they came on to the pit straight, Rosberg was just ahead, only to lose control through the flat-out kink before the pits and crash heavily into a concrete barrier.
Webber was right behind him and, as he passed the incident, the team came back on the radio with another "priority Rosberg" message. Webber paused for effect before replying in a languid Aussie drawl: "Britney's in the wall."

He did, but was that not prior? To some Wizard at MTC, making the fantastic decision to put the chef designer on gardening leave , half way through his design of the current car…..Fkin brilliant…you gotta Laugh at this lot, I met JB, at Barca in Feb, he was so xxxx off, he knew had a dog back then
I would bet that JB has a clause in his contract that they have to give me the facility to match his ability and like wise.
If I were RB, I would have him for his marketable presence alone, Its SVs team; I just don’t see Kemi as good fit
IMHO

100% the right move for Mark.
Despite the F1 marketing men managing to instill the notion that anything other than F1 is a retirement home, junior rank or back up for failures (a sentiment refreshingly absent from this thread), I am glad Webber seems to believe there is more to life than being in F1 in any capacity at all.
Like Mark a great deal, Bernie's flying circus will be the poorer for his absense and the WEC richer for his arrival!

I do like Webber but I dont think he was "treated like crap by Redbull". There obviously has been some favouritism toward Vettel but you cant hide from the results, and I think Webber knows that more than anyone. It may not be what you want to hear but Vettel is in a different league. Hopefully Kim will crash Vettels party!
F1's loss as an excellent driver who's turned in some remarkable results in a team atmosphere that must have been pretty sour for a good while now. Just shows how a pro really works, with massive effort even if he knows who the team really favours.
Really looking forward to F1 now as Webber's unshackled a little. I've no doubt he'd like to go out in good grace though, so I don't expect any naughtiness or score-settling, just a more relaxed, fearsomely fast racer who won't worry as much about contact as Vettel when they're in close proximity on the track.
As for a replacement, I can see Vergne in there. It's a one driver team like Ferrari. Any driver with a World Championship under his belt isn't going to go there without a massive parity clause in the contract, enforceable with some sort of unlubed stick, which of course, Redbull won't entertain. The only driver I can see there other than someone from the RB stable is Massa, but only as a safe pair of hands. IMHO it would be the start of the twilight career of any currently "top" drivers to take the obviously second seat alongside Vettel.

I don’t rate Vettel and I certainly never rated Webber. Webber is a midfield driver – always has been. Vettel is a good driver but not a world class driver in the same league as Alonso or Hamilton. The only reason Vettel has looked so dominant in the past 3 years is the superiority of the RB and Webbers mediocre driving making him look good.
When RB bought Jaguar none of the big name drivers wanted to know because Jaguar was a basket case and they had no idea what RB would transform it into. RB had Vettel through their academy so needed a number 2. Webber had previous connections with Jaguar and was in the right place at the right time. Since then he has been riding the Newey/RB wave pretending he is a world class driver able to challenge for the world championship. Nothing could be further from the truth.
I genuinely believe if you put Alonso or Hamilton in an RB they would destroy Vettel and since Vettel largely destroyed Webber over the past 3 years where does that leave his legacy?

Good Luck Mark-no more of the Lone Finger. Hopefully you can spank the boy around a bit before you walk away, and afterwards a factory drive is good news! Despite the demise of Allan Simonsen and the 4 hours of safety car this years Le Mans race was right on it, both at the front and the GTE class. Well Done Eurosport for it's excellent coverage.

heart breaking to loose Webber from f1 he is one of my favourite drivers! all the redbull minichamps in my house have webber at the wheel
should be good for him though and I hope he really makes an impact for Porsche.
what's all this talk of Kimi going to red bull?
I would think it would be Ricciardo, no?
I would rather Webber stayed in F1 but understand his situation at red bull.

Red Bull need someone consistent and reliable in the second seat, someone who constantly finishes and scores good points for the constructors titles.
I cannot see their younger drivers satisfying this demand. They need an older, experienced hand to replace M Webb.
Will be great to see Webber back in a proper racing series and treated like an adult
