You mean, if the post office normally has two windows, with separate queues, but today one is closed, and they've put up ten signs between the entrance of the building and the service windows saying "use both queues and take it in turns at the front", and the post office security guards publish a little book of rules to follow (called the "My Way Code") that says "when one window is closed use both queues and take it in turns at the front"?

Yes, I'd join whatever queue is shorter and wouldn't expect idiots to start tutting and acting like heroes because they can't follow clear and simple instructions... rolleyes
So a single window in service but two queueing routes laid out, one of which terminates at an unmanned window. Now are you seriously telling me if everyone was waiting in the manned window's queue route you'd just stroll down in the other queue then cut across to the manned window in front of someone?

You realise this saves no time overall as the bottle neck is the one window, it just saves time for yourself at the cost of all the people that were ahead of you.

Depending on how I'm feeling I will generally just merge I. Turn - not to pee anyone off, just pointless queuing when 1 lane is clear... You'll always get plonkers that are unable to merge in a civilised manner and just pee everyone off and invoke a reaction from other motorists...

If that's exactly how we were instructed to queue then, quite obviously, yes rolleyes

You're saying you'd ignore the instructions on signs that you walked past multiple times, maintain total ignorance of the prescribed method, most likely written down since before you were even born, and then decide to get uppity at someone who isn't as ignorant as you are?

And yet if every time someone uses the queuing system as instructed has to stop and argue with an idiot who can't read for a few minutes, it takes longer for everyone scratchchin

Excuse the bluntness, but are you really this stupid or are you just joking? You're so blatently wrong yet so insistent, it's quite funny biggrin

Calm down chap, I'm merely discussing this with you, don't get your panties in a twist.

You see, most people, despite seeing signs to queue down both routes, would still feel they were pushing in front of someone because...they are. In fact I actually highly doubt you'd do what you say you would when not in your car, for this very reason. In your wonderful post office analogy clearly you would wait rather than walk past a whole line of people waiting to use the very window you'd then stroll up to...if you say you wouldn't you're either lying or just incredibly selfish.

To put it another way, would you still stroll to the front if there was no sign saying to do so? If not, why not?

Irrelevant...

The signs instruct you to use both lanes, the highway code instructs you to merge in turn

It isn't pushing in, it's not rude or unfair, it's using the available highway capacity as intended and instructed by the designers

In fact, if it wasn't for people like you, the system would work far more smoothly and efficiently...

You know why its always a fu@ker in a German car who pushes in at the front of queues. They are just living the German way of life and pushing past everybody. It's not how we do things in this country however much it inconveniences you.

Actually it would appear that it is, Highway Code Rule 134.

It's not irrelevant at all as I suspect you might know, hence not offering an answer.

The relevance comes from the fact that you presumably would not do it if the signs weren't there because it would be a stty thing to do. Can you at least understand therefore, why, for many people, it still seems a stty thing to do when the signs are there?

If the issue is just to ensure cars fill all the tarmac, would you be perfectly happy to get to the front and then wait for all the 20 or 30 cars you'd passed to go through first or would you get annoyed if none of them let you in? After all, assuming you have a line of people behind you then all queueing capacity is in use and everyone is happy and waiting their turn, right?

So you are suggesting we ignore road signs so that simpletons don't get irritated? That seems a bit of a strange request.

If you want to start a thread about post offices The Lounge is available, it was an analogy so simple I hoped anybody could understand it and hence see the stupidity of their argument, but apparently not...

It's not my fault if other people can't read or choose to ignore the signage in place, and/or are ignorant of the highway code...

Quote from The Highway Code 134:

"You should follow the signs and road markings and get into the lane as directed. In congested road conditions do not change lanes unnecessarily. Merging in turn is recommended but only if safe and appropriate when vehicles are travelling at a very low speed, e.g. when approaching road works or a road traffic incident. It is not recommended at high speed."

The UK seems to be one of the only countries that I have driven in that seems to have a problem understanding 'merging in turn'.

I'll be sure to drive down the outside lane when I visit the family after Christmas in my German registered, German car. That should really wind some people up wink

I'm suggesting you can use your initiative in some situations. This isn't like ignoring a one way street sign.

I don't understand. If a sign says 'Use Both Lanes' why would you not comply?

I think you were rather hoist by your own petard by your post office analogy personally...you basically have to accept that it's a stty thing to push in front of everyone regardless of what the signs may say as you wouldn't do it were they not there.

I look forward to more wonderfully snide ad hominem criticism for having a differing viewpoint though.

Because unless I could see it was going to have an overall benefit for everyone queueing, I would feel like my more rapid progress was coming at the cost of every single person I'd gone past and personally I'd rather not be "that guy". If you don't mind that then fill your boots, I'm just explaining why I don't do it.

And yet again, totally irrelevant as the signs and instructions are there, do you really not see that?

Of course pushing in front of someone is wrong, but it's not pushing in - you are choosing to sit in a queue of stationary/slow moving traffic while others use the road network correctly, if you don't like that, use the road correctly yourself.

So simple...

Can you see that if everyone merged in turn that it would benefit everyone though? The reason that it only benefits the one guy following the suggested use of the road is because everyone else is queuing inanely.
