I must admit I've never actually test driven something so ridiculously out of reach there is no chance of me being in a position of owning one within the next few years.

Perhaps thats why I think 'test drives' are acceptable and others don't?

I've never tried it on a local Ferrari dealership for example.
Nor I think many people would suceed if they did, but I was just using that as an extreme example!

It reminds me about the thread where renault were giving 24 hour test drives on laguna's and all the idiots were reporting back here how they were taking them out for a drive??????? why!
Agreed about the rest, but in that case it was Renault itself offering the cars.
Excellent, so if someone offered you a 'free' kick in the nuts, would you gladly lie down and spread your legs? (they are renault's after all so the comparison is valid laugh )

some people perplex me, just because it is there they feel that they must accept it.

Forget it, it is obviously me that is wierd, carry on about your business people.............

It just boggles the mind that people spend their free time driving cars that they are not going to buy. just out of nosyness. Maybe it is just me.

So your saying that if you are truly passionate about cars and you had the chance to drive lets say a lambo or ferrari for the sake of argument, that you would turn down a test drive for sake of offending the salesman!!

Sod that! It might be the only chance to drive a car of that calibre and it would make me very very very happy, if thats terrible then so be it I will be going to hell! but at least I would have enjoyed myself.

If I had the chance to drive cars of that sort of standard I would jump at the chance and feel bad for the salesman later....
absolutely not, i have my dignity, shuffling round after the scraps from someone elses table doesn't appeal to me one little bit, i would (hypothetically) wait until i was in a position to buy one.

On the thread about massive depreciation there was a 02 reg RS6 for sale at £15,000 IIRC

What might not be affordable today may well be sooner than you think.

I wonder if it is the same people who also book viewings of houses when they aren't looking to move, just to have a look around?

I was more thinking about the Ferrari example. The only reason I've not test driven an M5 yet is becuase it'll tell me nothing I dont already know - that it is a staggering car I must own immediatly - with the added disadvantage of making my current car feel crap.

I suppose it's sort of like a wine tasting. You take a bit of a hit giving a few bottles away free but hopefully a few people will buy a case.

thanks for your opinion. but it is nothing that an evo road test wouldn't have given.

That said, i bet the audi sales people love messers like you (unless you are seriously considering buying one - which going by the tone of your closing comments i suspect not!)

Greg
Is that the most useful thing you could think of to write Greg, someone comes to the forum and gives their thoughts and opinions of a new car they've driven and this is the response they get, poor show.

John.

Maybe i should have padded out my initial response a bit more but i am busy atm.

my sentiments are the same, it is a personal bugbear of mine when people test pilot cars they have no intention of buying and as stated previously, the sales staff must get royally hacked off with it.

If he had driven a mates car and reported back on it here then brilliant and i would have been all ears (ie. if the owner was cool about the test drive) but messing salesmen around is just not on and smacks of desperation/ego boosting.

To answer a couple of comments.
a) no, i am most certainly not jealous.
b) no, i never have test driven a car for the hell of it, nor would i dream of it.

I think your initial post was out of order. The post above just looks likes a big attempt at arse covering.

Still, look on the bright side, this debate about test drives has meant Carlos's comment that an RS6 is not comparable to his super modified free 335d of extreme remapped justice has been allowed to slide without comment tongue out

One of my directors was treated to a joyride yesterday in the new RS6. This simply because he bought a new A4 140 Tdi off them the other month.

He has no interest in cars and, whilst he enjoyed himself, he'll definitely never buy one. So, I don't think the stealerships are that worried about who's test-driving them. Could it be suggested that they're pushing them hard in this current financial climate?

Now thats unusual for an Audi dealership. I wasn't even invited to look at the R8 or RS6 despite one assumes being on the sort of customer lists of people they would like to come back and spend again with them. They are not I notice very good at that sort of thing normally.

Jesus. How can they justify a weight like that?
Are they putting sacks of lead under the seats?

If you see one you'll see why mostly. Its enormous for one thing. The steel alone must have weighed a big part of that weight. The engine bay is pretty crammed with a pretty huge engine and gearbox and then you've got the heavyweight shafts for the four wheel drive. I was surprised it weighed as little as they claimed when I first saw it.

Just because i refuse to test drive a car i have no intention of purchasing and disagree with others doing so makes me a tosser does it.

I wasn't going to rise to it, but what the hell, it will be fun:

"i'll climb out of my arse if you climb back down your pit, taff boy, that is if you can stop committing suicide for long enough to claim some more disability first, loser"

If i'm going to be a tosser, i may as well do the job properly, n'est pas!

p.s. i don't dislike welsh people really, it's just fun winding up flid's like matt

This car could be the last ever 'more weight = more power = more weight = more power' german ubertank, what with BMW and Audi talking of downsizing and turbo/supercharging the engines and lightening their next generation of halo models.

Consequently it may well be worth comparatively little in a few years, but the terrifying running costs will remain.

Anyway, nice write up dxb335d, I particularly liked your description of the gearchanges.

I personally only test drive cars, if the particular dealerste has treated me like I'm a nobody, because of my age / way I'm dressed...

I've had all too many car sales people at main dealers, treat me like I'm some tw@t off the street, that I now make a point of going there to take the piss out of them....

However, I've driven many a car that I have not bought, and a few I had no intention of buying in the near future....

3 of those cars which I had no intention of buying, I then purchased.....

I am living proof that a so called time waster, can in future go back and buy that car...

Do you not think that people like the OP (which incidentally wasn't time wasting) but so called time wasters, who then post hugely positive comments about the car they drive, or tell their mates, etc are advertising the car they have driven? for free... on behalf of the showroom / salesperson who's time they 'wasted'?

Won't the OP have potentially have encouraged maybe some more of his affluent (not that i'm presuming to know about the OP's financial situation) friends to consider this car in the future? or possibly buy one a few years down the line when the depreciation has hit?

Personally I think you have no right to say that someone shouldn't test drive a car they have no intention of buying.... some future choices are made by chance, so a possible purchase may arise from the so called time wasting...

Also, the amount of sales people that have wasted my time, in so called upmarket car dealerships is unbelievable so I will continue to drive any car I feel the urge to drive, as and when the opportunity arises... who knows when my luck may change and I will be able to buy that F430, Lambo murthi, etc - would I have thought I'd have a 997 turbo from a main dealer when I first test drove a porsche a few years ago and decided that thats the car I'd like?
