These things emit some sort of sound inaudible to humans that warn off the deer before they suicide themselves acros a road. They actually appear to work quite well. Do any of you live were such hazards are frequent?
Interesting. I live near a major forest and the area around is generally countrified, loads of deer around.

Had an excursion into a hedge avoiding one last year and my sister's first car was written off when a stag jumped into her path.

Once had to stop to allow no less than 6 deer cross the road in front of me.

Any links to the product?
I will search; however, I will ask around first to see which one seems to work versus the bogus one. smile There are some "Oh st!" deer/car crash photos on the web; worth a look-see.
We have had a testing of a different system for the same end here in Denmark.

Road markers adorned with reflectives, to direct the light emitted from passing cars into the forest, to prevent the deer from going near the road altogether.
First study showed reasonable succes though not worth a reinvestment on big scale.

Or you could just do it the Swedish way, and fence the buggers in laughlaugh

Don't you spread grit and the US spreads salt? Jim will be all too familiar with snow as he will be getting another 6 to 12 inches (of snow) on Wednesday
Depends on conditions, sometime salt, sometimes a mix & sometimes just grit.
It seems to be just sand in Seattle... which is useless after the first 10 minutes

I "hit" a deer a few years ago on the A12, I was doing about 70, middle of the night. Car full of pissed girls on the way back from a club.

The deer ran out from my off-side, I swerved kind of before I even realised what was happening, and glanced the deer off the side. Smashed (completely obliterated) my door mirror (replaced for 49p!), lost control of the car and spun, ended up facing the wrong way. Car had a few dents but nothing serious. Dead deer. Screaming girls. Not one single person stopped to see if we were OK...

Regarding discouraging the animals from crossing the roads, I have used in the past a reflector, on a post in the verge, with a cats-eye type effect. As cars drive along the road, the reflectors "bounce" 2 small red dots in to the fields, looking like predatory eyes. I'm not entirely sure how effective they were, as a couple of years ago there was an issue with a high number of badgers being run over. (I had to find out whether any were "lactating females" - not a fun job)

(ETA reflectors sound similar to what CK N4S describes above)
