OP, have you thought of a custom car? i.e. Build something to do the job exactly?

Being serious I guess any coupe is really out of the question, as none are really going to offer hugely better practicality in seating terms than the TVR. So as much as I'd like to say Monaro I'm not convinced it's really the answer.

If you want to stick with the coupe theme how about something like a RX-8. If you buy a slightly earlier model it'll leave scope to buy a supercharger kit for it also.
Custom car? Tell me more... Or is that because I am asking for the world on a stick hehe

A coupe would be fine as long as I can get a child seat in the back, leaving enough room for the front seat passenger (my wife) not to have her nose pressed against the windscreen. She is only 5'4", but in the TVR her head is almost touching the internal roll cage. Any journey more than a couple of miles is not a pleasant experience for her.

This is partly why I am not really considering a M3, we have borrowed the in-laws 3 series a few times and it's pretty tight with the baby seat in the back, not impossible, but definitely compromised.

I know RX-8s are very cheap to buy at the moment, but I think they are in a different peer group to the S4, M5, S-Type R... Plus I have done the Japanese rocket thing.

Only said RX-8 as it's a 4 seater and is fun to drive.

In terms of a custom car. Well whatever you want. £10-12k cash could build you a very capable car. Ok you won't likely get your money back on the mods and custom work. But as most cars depreciate I think you could end up no worse off.

Lots and lots of options just depends what you fancy. Something simple like a tidy e30 touring with an e46 M3 engine in. Plenty of room, drama and pace.

Or you could look at classics, maybe an older Ford or Triumph with a V8 in. Or stick to more more modern cars and simply modify, such as a XJR6 with a twin turbo conversion and over 450hp.

If you don't mind the fuel bills then a LS1powered classic Range Rover could well be fun.

With a custom vehicle the only limitations are money and your imagination.

Sounds to me like you need to get out and try a few. Definitely try the S-type R.
