Just had a Text from him:

"Hiya, just got Paypal sorted so check it after dinner, I'll transfer the deposit when I get home. Just spoke to Northway (That's the Porsche specialist) - They have limited availability but can do the inspection this week so probably best for you to check that. They are doing a full inspection and Valuation so I will transfer the rest of the money. If anything comes back I am not happy with, do you agree to return my Deposit? It's £125 for the check, i will pay over the phone".
Ref the bit I've highlighted, you should've sent him this back as an MMS :

They should all be like me and just buy the first one they see. What could go wrong.
hehe The only times I've not bought the car I've gone to see is when there is someone with me to persuade me that the car should not be bought. Usually the seller is really surprised how quickly I agree to buy the car.
Amatuers hehe

Call friend in the trade and tell him you're after a car.

They call you whilst looking round car on a February late afternoon and give you a run down of history and 'issues' like needs 4 tyres, a service, small ding in boot where closed on something slightly larger than the boot...etc. and agree price to collect the next weekend. When the last time you even sat in one was when they were new and you've never driven one biggrin

At the end of the day unless you buy a ringer and/or are a total sop you can easily spot most immediate 'issues' and the rest is luck of the draw; dealer bought with warranty or not. Having an inspection is an optional extra which you might wish to invest in or not depending on what you are buying. It could save you from something ruinous that would stop you from buying that car but equally it could pass with flying colours then deposit expensive bits of metal and fluids all over the A5 2 weeks later.

OP - PayPal deposit is a big nono

Thanks again guys, I've adjusted the advert and put a few more pics and stuff up as I'd taken loads on the day before he came to see it.

As said the fact he looked at 13 in total and wanted this one badly gives me hope someone else will be the same but it's just disappointing when someone can seem so genuine, honest and take up SO much of my time only for them to have been completely naive about the ownership costs on such a car....

I can't help but think maybe he couldn't get the money he needed, initially he told me he'd been saving for years so it was one thing he needed to get out of his system before selling but then he said with loans etc to pay.... I think he may have started out with a £10k budget and quickly realised he wouldn't get what he wanted so started stretching himself.

I'm sure your car is a good example and everything but the above is not a fact, it's just what he's told you.

I reckon he just looked online and thought "I like them Boxsters, I'll go and have a look at one", saw yours (maybe 1 or 2 others previously) and got caught up with the excitement of buying a car. He THEN did his "research". He's then given you the sob story in the hope that you will reduce the price.

As others have said, you should follow some rules:
1. Anyone can view the car, even if a deposit paid (explain to other viewers that someone has paid a deposit but they're welcome to still view the car in case it doesn't sell)
2. Deposit is NOT refundable in any circumstance. Personally I'm not a trader so not interested in deposits anyway, if they want the car, pay for it and take it away.
3. If they want to have the car inspected then I would take the following approach
a) They pay a non-refundable deposit (say £20 to £50) to not sell the car on the day of the inspection ONLY
b) The day after, if they do not buy the car (and pay in full) you will allow someone else to buy. If they are still interested then they need to get the agreed price to you before someone else gets in. Simple.
