I haven't.

The bloke who started this thread is one of those time wasters. He didn't get a drive. A salesman would rather talk to an enthusiast than a tyre kicker.

It all makes sense to me.

I really don't believe there are a lot of salesman out there refusing test drives to people who really really want to buy cars. But I do think there are a lot of dreamers out there.

But then I do get out of the house occasionally.

1. Glad it makes sense to you.
2. Was there a need to add that silly smarmy comment at the end? Really doesn't make you look good, you know.

32 pages of differing views on this forum is evidence this is not so clear cut as salesmen seem to advocate.

The comment wasn't aimed at you. Just a general comment about the way some forum discussions go where people will pontificate on what people should do with, on the face of it, not many having much in the way of real world experience of the situation.

Salesmen have to deal with prospects and customers every day. We may interact with a car salesman probably less than once a year on average. I think they are probably better at sussing out whether people are worth giving a test drive to than most of us.

Is he? I see a chap slowly coming towards a sale and trying to buy in to the brand and the car. Salesmen are targeted on a sale by their companies. These companies, however, have also taken a franchise and have thus made a commitment to further the manufacturers' brands. There is an obvious disconnection there.

People who are salaried on commission (should) have no time for anything other than sales. Dealers like commission because there is only upside and no fixed costs. Customers hate commission only because they're hassled for a sale immediately and the sales folks are the gatekeepers to the products.

Whole system is a joke really.

Tell us something about yourself Deva. I mean John.

You appear to be yet another trolling axe grinder who has signed up to PH under a second, third, fourth handle etc.. just to have a pop at the car trade. You could at least introduce yourself, post your car history with some pics, tell us what you do etc.. before you start trolling.

Otherwise you're just another boring little onanist. And we've already got quite enough of those...

Correct. Finally after 32 pages, a non Car Salesperson has got it.

I think people got that on page one. 32 pages and Car Salesmen have failed to grasp how offensive that is and how wrong they are.
I wouldn't mind any car sales person on here answering why they think Car Sales is any different to any other aspect of retail.
Perhaps its the fact that they believe they can sell ice to Eskimos, yet fail to actually sell sometimes and rather that be their dire technique its more that the customer is a time waster.

From what I'm reading on here salesmen are making out if a customer walks in he/she either..
a)has already decided to buy car x, just a test drive will seal it.
b)has no intention on buying but wants a free drive.

Which begs the question, what are car salesmen for?.

Why don't you go to your local specialist hi-fi shop this afternoon? Make it clear you are 'just interested' but won't be buying this afternoon, and you don't really know when you will. However, also state you have also been a big fan of Mark Levinson stuff and so would like to have the use of their demo room for an hour to see what you think. Let us know how you get on.

Once you've completed that task, visit an up market kitchen showroom and ask for an hour with a consultant to discuss a project you would like to do when you move house and construct your self-build. Do explain you don't know exactly when that will be and that you haven't put your house on the market yet but you just want to see what their designs would look like against your back of a fag packet dimensions. Oh, and you particularly like oak.

Making the coffee? That's all most of them seem to be any good for.

I've had two good experiences with car salesmen over the last 20 years. The first one threw me the keys to a new Saab convertible and told me to drive it to the Audi dealer, check out the equivalent A4, and come back when I'd decided that the 9-3 was the better car (in that instance he didn't actually get the sale, but it was a close thing. The Audi didn't get a look in as nobody was interested in talking to me, let alone letting me drive a car). The second was a Lexus dealer who lent me an RX300 for the weekend, gave me a ring when the right car came into stock, and got a nice easy sale.

The rest have all made sales despite of, rather than because of, their sales skills.

This in a nut shell.

You're talking to an enthusiast and someone walks in, you're more than happy to leave them to it to speak to the walk in. Enthusiast is happy because all they wanted was to have a nose around.

Now imagine you've sussed a waster early on, and someone walks in. What do you do? Miss the walk in and waste time with the guy you're with? Or cut short with the him to go and talk to the walk in. Then watch the bloke without a pot to piss in start quimming about it on the internet, and call the manufacturer first thing Monday to complain about you. It happens so often on this forum it's beyond a joke sometimes!

I have no axe to grind. I was just explaining the facts which are indisputable. Sorry if you don't like that and I don't understand why you take it so personally that you'd make such rude and personal remarks. Nor do I much care given it's only the internet.

And in the case of the OP, see if they'll match the price the local chippy will make it for and if they'll buy your existing worktops off you at retail prices.

So don't allow walk-ins! If you're that worried then insist everyone makes appointments! After all, you'll happily ignore emails so why not ignore walk-ins too and qualify everyone right at the start! Ridiculous.

Somewhat over-exaggerated for affect, but that's purely out of lack of argument.
I can go to a local hi-fi shop and try out the latest sound systems, why I would tell them I had no intention to buy?, the OP didn't say that.
I can go and try out the latest laptops, TV's, XBOX, PS4 etc. I can go to try on a suit, some trainers or even a dress I'd imagine.
Again, I will ask why exactly car showrooms feel they should be any different?.

I think it's purely arrogance that the salesmen on this thread cannot get it that being dismissive is possibly the worst thing they could ever do to a member of the public.
Right now I can afford a new car, I just don't need one. I could walk into a showroom this afternoon and be persuaded that I need one, I'm quite a gullible chap at times. I've walked into showrooms before with the Mrs and kids to get dirty looks from some salesmen, turned on my heels and left. And, perhaps its just my pig-headedness, I will never ever darken their door again.

I remember walking into a certain electrical shop, looking through the TV wall mounts and being approached by some cocky little so and so and asking if they had any more budget ones. The bloke laughed before he replied, so I walked out mid sentence and never went back into the shop (After buying one for half the price online). That shop went under last year, not because it lost my sale, but because that was obviously the general attitude it had towards its customers.
