Rick 101, disowning her might be a bit extreme, just tell her she now has to walk everywhere, and that she can never, ever go on any fairground or amusement park ride ever again (so that's Disneyland out of the picture for a start!_ She then might understand where pistonhead members are coming from smile

Generally because public transport does not go from where you are, to where you want to be directly, and do it when `you' want to travel.
it is usually quite slow. You cannot carry much with you (a nightmare if you are a plumber who has to install a new boiler and hot water cylinder) It is often very expensive. You mix with people who might have any number of infections increasing your chance of contracting one. You get cold and wet waiting for ages at a bus stop or station, You have virtually no control over your journey, and if someone decides to step in front of a train or bus, you and many others get stranded with little or no choice of an alternative route transport option.
Buses and trains are also operated in the most inefficient, polluting mode (Continuous start / stop)
At Much of the time outside the rush hour buses and trains are often almost empty if not entirely empty, wasting even more energy, and creating pollution for nothing.

I have an Impreza wrx. Had it for 2 years now.
My dad has an Audi estate. Had it for about 10 years.

I was watching Fifth Gear with the wife this week. They had a Subaru Legacy, Audi and a Volvo T5 on as budget options.

First car comes up. The Subaru Legacy.

Her "thats just like your dads car isn't it"
Me "er, not really, it's just like the car we have outside, the Audi is what my dad has"

I then get a look like I'm special and deserve sympathy.

Her "no it's that one, thats just like your dads, except your dads is an Audi and its black"
Me "yeah just like the black Audi they had on screen 30 seconds ago"
Her "hmmm yeah, I suppose you might be right"

Fortunately at this point Jason Potato chimed in with something about the WRX underpinnings on the Legacy and she conceded I wan't going mental.
Although from her point of view you've just said the equivalent of saying that a Bosche Dishwasher is more similar to a Bosche Tumbledrier than is to a Whirlpool Dishwasher (not intending to sound sexist with kitchen appliances but many car fans forget that to the majority of people they are white goods), so she has good cause to look at you like you're an fool biggrin

My wife tried public transport for a trip to Legoland with the kids once, when I was away on tour.

Two buses, two trains, over two and a half hours to get there, and having to leave earlier to get connecting services back, meant a short day at the park. Add in the fact that off peak fares don't allow an early start, and the trains aren't cheap, and you have a VERY poor value for money day out, and a long day to boot.

Compared with the trip by car when I was home on leave...

Fancy Legoland today? Aye, alright. Lob kids and selves into car, less than half an hour to get there, only one 'fare' and that was fuel for the car. Have a much longer day in the park, better value for money, then stay right to the end, followed by a leisurely drive home through Windsor Great Park and a meal at a pub on the way back. No contest.

I can see how public transport can work on a local level, like getting the bus to work, or commuting long distances by train, but only if you work in the centre of a busy town or city. Once you get away from the main routes, services become fewer, and further between, if they run at all. A recent shoulder injury left me dependent on buses to get to hospital appointments and suchlike. It was horrible. And that's not from a snobbery viewpoint, simply the fact that you have to plan ahead, leave at times to suit the bus company, and cannot guarantee that every bus will actually run, and even if it does, it might not run on time.

Public transport is 'Catch 22'. The worse the service, the more likely folk are to get a car. The more cars there are, the less people rely on the bus, so services are cut. This forces more people into cars, further affecting profitability. Bonkers.

What's worse is that, even as a keen driver, the trip into town 'for a few things from the shops' isn't a particularly inspiring drive, and parking is a nightmare. If the bus services were clean, reliable, and good value for money, then I'd use them. As it is, they're often dirty, cannot be relied upon, are inconvenient and I can drive in, park for two hours, and drive home again for a fraction of the cost of the bus.

The trip to the hospital is a case in point - £3.80 on the bus, for a twenty minute ride eek

In the car it's a ten minute drive at most, and if I'm prepared to walk a few extra yards, parking can often be had for free, and even if I park on site, 2 hours can be had for £2.70, with the added bonus that I can start and finish the journey at a time of my own choosing, and can make detours on the way home too.

So Yes! Suggesting public transport as a viable alternative to using my car is a VERY stupid thing for a non-petrolhead to say wink

Actually a box standard MX-5 IS faster than most other things, the second the road deviates from a straight line.

At the Morgan Factory yesterday there was a Lotus Carlton in the car park. (which was beautiful by the way).

All the correct badges and original state from what I could see. And some 'chav' looking types staring at the front of the car, only for one of them to say, ''its an old Cavalier, theyve just stuck badges on it, saying its a lotus.....who's gonna think its a lotus''

At this point I just laughed in utter shock and walked off while they admired the Cavalier.

Knobs!

watch their head explode when you tell them that (within broad parameters) you don't really care about economy

No, no, no, no, no.

Just take her over to her friends or to school, or to somewhere very public in a Suzuki Wagon R or similarly uncool vehicle, explaining that it's purely to get her from one place to another. Keep doing so whilst refusing to take her in the nice car until she begs for mercy.

Tell her that you were going to buy her a pony for Christmas, but she's just made you realise that they too are just to get you from one place to another. You don't want to buy her something that she can't love, so you'll buy her some Lego instead.

If you're comparing it to the one that's about to be released there isn't that much in it really.
