If your wife liked the jeep you had in the US, why not look at these, patriots would come into your budget, or you could look at an older cherokee. and as a left field choice a dodge nitro.

we have a 10 year old jeep which has been completely reliable for 3 years (it it a bit thirsty however!)

Buy an old X5 4.4 (or better sill, a 4.6!) and have done with it. A lot more flash for the cash! You get a proper engine, proper interior, proper build quality. You are still driving a £40k car.

They are dire in the snow
That's a really good point, don't know if it's just that all these kind of cars are like that but I rented one in Ireland a couple of winters back when it really snowed quite a bit and was amazed at how it just couldn't deal with it.

Having come from a Prelude which behaved very well in snow (surprisingly!) I was amazed at how the thing just wouldn't stop, or turn, or go. Suspect it's probably the case with anything tall and heavy?
More down to a combination of ABS, ESP and wide road biased tyres. I've managed fine in a CRV and Forester in pretty bad snow with Bridgestone Dueller tyres on, but all Qashquais come with regular road tyres which makes a massive difference.
