McLaren 12C Crash On Hot 'Ring Lap

Prang leads to speculation a record attempt is on the cards...

Victim said to be an 'early prototype'

McLaren is investigating the cause of a high speed accident that saw one of its early 12C prototypes take out a section of the barriers at the Nurburgring on Friday.

The car in question is already back in the workshops at McLaren's Technical Centre in Woking and has not been put out of action for good, we're told. The unnamed driver is OK too, but we can't get any word from the firm as to whether the prang was human error or a technical malfunction. "We're looking into it, and when we find out we probably won't tell you," is the easiest way to paraphrase the firm's official response to our enquiry. Charming, sniff!

Either way, reports from the German circuit suggest the car suffered a pretty big 'off'. Here's an excerpt from bridgetogantry.com who are pretty good on these sorts of things:

"After last night's industry pool finished, the McLaren took to the track alone, driving flat out. A helicopter with a TV crew were doing their best to keep up. Eager drivers waiting for the public session to begin reported the MP4 coming past them at the Nordschleife Zufahrt carpark at full speed, before disappearing under Antoniusbuche. Within seconds tyres were screaming and witnesses reported the sound of a large impact. Shortly afterwards a covered truck recovered a wrecked car from the area after Antoniusbuche and Tiergarten. When touristenfahrt finally opened (1 hour behind schedule), the area where it's presumed the McLaren crashed was declared a roadworks zone with evidence of barrier damage and fluidspills readily apparent."

McLaren told PH this morning that the helicopter 'was nothing to do with us', and that the prototype was at the 'Ring for ongoing durability assessment work'.

However our source did confirm the crash took place at the end of the scheduled test session, which (we are happy to speculate) is exactly the sort of time that drivers might attempt to post a hot lap.

So is McLaren going to quote an official 'Ring lap time for the MP4 12C?

"We may do at some point, but it's quite a challenge because you can go all the way down there and get set up to find the weather's not right or something - so it's not the focus of our activity," says our official source. That'll be a 'yes' then...

I was there and seen it on the testing lap a few days beforehand and it sounded like a thunderstorm. the one I seen was the white one on the final few bends just before the long straight. The day was filled with ugly Mercedes Box covered things and a few minis and a V10 R8 testing then the Mclaren came from the belowing hills. Quick stable and the rear wing looked cool as anything! good luck getting the car ready, it will be a monster!!! I can lay testiment to that!

Was there on Tuesday, McLaren had a camera crew there and they said they were going for a production car record on Friday morning.

How long until people start dribbling again on about how it isn't quite as (subjectively/whatever) looking as a 458?

Or are we over that now.

Or shut them up by sticking two fingers up at Johnny Foreigner by posting a production car lap record at the ring.

Was just thinking- some people have such tedious jobs, <yawn> "oh, not another day of hot ring laps in a Mclaren" :-)

Speed wasn't the only thing they tested by the sounds of it.

The car's safety can't be too bad then if they can pile it into a barrier and not write the car (or driver) off.

These things happen.

Never mind. I am more concerned about the continued use of amber side indicators TBH. Very American market.

Where are the "it looks like a kit car" or "id rather have a 997 turbo" tts?
They are letting their side down, opportunities to gloat like this don`t come very often so where are they?

I was there on Friday and watched the MP4-12C drive through Brunchen. The helicopter arrived first, hovered low facing the track while the car drove through and then shot off to another part of the circuit. It certainly looked like it was with them.

I was in the main Tourist car park for the start of Touristenfahrten, but didn't hear the loud bang. Speculation at the time was that one of the course cars had gone off which seemed a little strange. Especially when you have hired a car for the evening and the clock is ticking!

All the McLaren bods were in the Pistenklause on Thursday night. Maybe the driver had one too many weiss biers - I know I did...

I think I posted this in the wrong section last Friday (Motoring News?). Thanks very much for the credit and link, much appreciated. It's great to hear what other people saw too. It's complete horse$hit that McLaren weren't behind the filmcrew or helicopter.

Testament to the safety of the car really that the driver is ok... that's a very fast part of the track, especially in a nigh on 600 Bhp Mclaren...
