What car (sort of) - Stupid decision?
Discussion
I'm just weighing up this decision and thought I'd post up the dilemma to see what PH thought...
Currently have a '06 MX5, 1.8. It's great and I have no reason to want anything else for the foreseeable future. However, it's not perfect. There's a short list of relatively expensive (in comparison to the value of the car) modifications that I'd like to make that would transform the car, however many of these are things that are standard on the 2.0 car (which I should have bought in the first place).
These modifications would leave me with a great handling car, but without the slight extra power of the 2.0 and a few other luxuries which I couldn't mind having such as A/C.
The cost of these modifications would be about the same as the cost to change to the 2.0, which would omit some of the planned modifications but could of course be added at a later date.
This seems the stupid bit. I'd be changing the car for an identical looking car, of the same age (though less mileage). I'm fine with that, as I like how it looks and it's in the best colour
, but nonetheless it's sending alarm bells ringing that it's a dumb decision. Looking at it objectively, though, it seems the best option. It would also strangely mean cheaper insurance, as obviously adding things which are standard on the 2.0 to my 1.8 would mean higher insurance, whereas a lot of this plus more will already be standard on the 2.0.
But then, if I start thinking about changing it to the 2.0, I'm thinking why stop there. Why not go the whole hog and change to an S2000 or similar (or a Chimaera which is the long term goal, though not sure how it would stand up to every day use).
So, what would you do?
Keep the 1.8 and spend the money on that.
Swap to the 2.0 Sport and have a better car all round with a lot of the modifications I've already done to mine being a straight swap over.
Or, change to something completely different?
It's probably going to be done in around six months, which might seem a little on the long-term side of planning, but it comes down to save or spend, really, which is a choice I should make sooner rather than later.
