Traffic news on the radio - do we really need it?
Discussion
Do you listen to it and take note?
Personally I would never tire of trapping R2s plum-in-the-gob, nice-but-dim, boring Sally Traffics head in a door and repeatedly trying to close it as I think she's 'Awful' and usually turn off when she and any of her cohorts take to the airwaves at twenty past and 5 to the hour. This is usually as I'm at work not going anywhere so have no need for it, but I do it when travelling too.
I mean, if you're bezzing down the M1 and are told there is an accident 10 miles ahead do you deviate or just face the fact you're going to be slow or stationary for a while?
I can't be bothered trying to find a route around it as:
A. Lots of others will be doing it too
B. I would generally get lost
C. Use more fuel
D. Wouldn't gain any time.
Your thoughts?

Yes. I listen to it and it can make a difference.
My daily commute is Newbury to Guildford and I can either go up the M3, or through Farnham to get to the Hogs Back. However, I have to make a decision before J5, as there is a good 7 mile stretch of the M3 with no off slip.
The M3 has a tendency to clog really badly around Fleet Services. The traffic news comes on just as I'm coming through Basingstoke and if the M3 is really bad, it is often announced, meaning that I can make my decision early. If I end up sitting in bad traffic on the M3, it can easily add 25 minutes to my journey.
I use the traffic feature on my nav as well, but sometimes it's good to get further confirmation.
I'd rather have too much information than too little.
ETA. The Hogs Back is always very, very slow, so any time gained elsewhere makes a real difference.

I get to hear about all the mess on the roads that I've left behind now I live oop north.
Not just me that does this then - I have a little chuckle when I hear "Accident at the M5/M6 Junction with stationary traffic & 7 mile tailbacks" at 5pm on a FridayI used to dread heading back home on Fridays!
I'm old enough to remember Radio 2 without it, and before you could get it any other way when on the move.
The local reports were always too local. The Radio 2 traffic news was awesome and saved me lots and lots of time.
It's perhaps less relevant nowadays with satnav traffic etc., but still helps form a mental image of traffic on a long journey.

Yes its great, being on the road all day it helps to know if there are problems where I am headed so can take an alternate route, that and traffic on my satnav has helped me avoid any major jams for the last 5 years, I wouldnt want to live down south though, especially on a Friday, it sounds horrendous every Friday.

I'd have been trying to get into Birmingham for 3+ hours last night not the 2 it ended up being were it not for a travel update telling me the A38 was closed off the M6.
Problem there was eventually all the roads gridlock and you end up needing to leave before you knew it had happened to get to your destination on time.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
