Do you listen to it and take note?

Personally I would never tire of trapping R2s plum-in-the-gob, nice-but-dim, boring Sally Traffics head in a door and repeatedly trying to close it as I think she's 'Awful' and usually turn off when she and any of her cohorts take to the airwaves at twenty past and 5 to the hour. This is usually as I'm at work not going anywhere so have no need for it, but I do it when travelling too.

I mean, if you're bezzing down the M1 and are told there is an accident 10 miles ahead do you deviate or just face the fact you're going to be slow or stationary for a while?

I can't be bothered trying to find a route around it as:

A. Lots of others will be doing it too
B. I would generally get lost
C. Use more fuel
D. Wouldn't gain any time.

Your thoughts?

TomTom traffic has been my way for donkeys years now. I enjoy LBC on a Friday evening when cooking as I get to hear about all the mess on the roads that I've left behind now I live oop north.

Dead handy on a long trip I think.

If Im doing Preston to London say and traffic says the M40 has been stolen I know to do M6,M1 instead, Sally traffic saves the day, and she sounds sexy even though she isnt much.

Good to know what is going on and recognise blackspots that are frequently mentioned.

It's too early, too late or irrelevant.

Local is even worse as they tend to use local landmarks and designations, ok if you are a local rubbish if you don't know where the pig's whistle roundabout is.

Yes. I listen to it and it can make a difference.

My daily commute is Newbury to Guildford and I can either go up the M3, or through Farnham to get to the Hogs Back. However, I have to make a decision before J5, as there is a good 7 mile stretch of the M3 with no off slip.

The M3 has a tendency to clog really badly around Fleet Services. The traffic news comes on just as I'm coming through Basingstoke and if the M3 is really bad, it is often announced, meaning that I can make my decision early. If I end up sitting in bad traffic on the M3, it can easily add 25 minutes to my journey.

I use the traffic feature on my nav as well, but sometimes it's good to get further confirmation.

I'd rather have too much information than too little.

ETA. The Hogs Back is always very, very slow, so any time gained elsewhere makes a real difference.

I'd have been trying to get into Birmingham for 3+ hours last night not the 2 it ended up being were it not for a travel update telling me the A38 was closed off the M6.

Not just me that does this then - I have a little chuckle when I hear "Accident at the M5/M6 Junction with stationary traffic & 7 mile tailbacks" at 5pm on a Fridaylaugh

I used to dread heading back home on Fridays!

I'm old enough to remember Radio 2 without it, and before you could get it any other way when on the move.

The local reports were always too local. The Radio 2 traffic news was awesome and saved me lots and lots of time.

It's perhaps less relevant nowadays with satnav traffic etc., but still helps form a mental image of traffic on a long journey.

Yes its great, being on the road all day it helps to know if there are problems where I am headed so can take an alternate route, that and traffic on my satnav has helped me avoid any major jams for the last 5 years, I wouldnt want to live down south though, especially on a Friday, it sounds horrendous every Friday.

I like it - definently needed.

That said - I have the RDS traffic info enabled, but some radio stations seem to forget to switch off the RDS signal, so I have to listen to their inane bks after the traffic bulletin has finished. Very annoying.

I only listen to it to hear places I used to get stuck in still being gridlocked at regular times.

All the time on LBC, really useful to know about Blackwall Tunnel, Dartford, M25, etc. in advance. Also use Google maps traffic.

Find it pretty crap most of the time, never tell you in time about delays, or even don't tell you about them at all, and then sometimes tell you about delays that don't exist, that might just be up here though. But my experience - bloody useless.

Problem there was eventually all the roads gridlock and you end up needing to leave before you knew it had happened to get to your destination on time.

I listen to local traffic news every day and it's saved me getting caught up in some massive jams.

I'm a fan. My local radio station gives details of roads closed, traffic jams even bus routes disrupted by roadworks smile

The only thing that annoys me about R2 traffic is their constant insistence on saying that the M20 goes north/south.

It doesn't, it's east/west or London/coast.

When I did a certain commute, if it said avoid xyz, I'd head for xyz as the news was usually old and everyone would follow the radios advice leaving the area empty
