Is filling up with a jerrycan at a petrol station ok?
Discussion
There are rules. Can has to be approved for petrol. IIRC maximum Jerry can size is 10L even though everyone uses 20L ones. Think there's a limit to how many cans you can fill too.
Most petrol stations ignore the rules though and I've never had anybody stop me filling three ancient 20L jerry cans.

It's 10 litres for plastic and 20 for metal jerry cans Most petrol stations ignore the rules though and I've never had anybody stop me filling three ancient 20L jerry cans.
The law only regards petrol and not diesel. It's also very poorly enforced at fuel stations, usually if one say no the next will say yes.
Container upto 10l if plastic. Upto 20l if metal.
But. To store at home, upto 5 litres plastic, and 10 litres metal. And you can only have 2 of each at home.

I was denied service filling some cans at a tesco/esso station. Young lad at the counter said he didnt think I was allowed to fill them. I explain there high quality tested/certified jerry cans (10L ones too, I got them from my local RNLI shed). He got his manager over, explained the situation to him, we both thank the lad at the till for being careful and I was allowed to fill them.
That was a few years back when there was some form of fuel scare & the daily fail was plastered with stories of people trying to stockpile petrol in jars & s
t. I also turned up on foot without a car... I was also 16/17 if I remember right.

Fair play, much respect for how you handled that. The issue is that often those working the checkout/petrok station get limited training, but plenty of threats that they will be liable if they sell illegally.
Therefore it's only natural they are very risk-averse when something out of the ordinary happens.
A lot of the pressure was put on garages when the last fuel crisis led to people filling anything with petrol. This led to one half with woman blowing up her house when the petrol stored in her kitchen blew up when the fumes were ignited by the gas cooker.
Hence the panic message that was sent out.
I have never had an issue filling up my Jerry Cans.

No one has ever questioned me filling up multiple plastic ones at a time as well as the car over the years, in fact since they introduced pay at pump I have never spoken to anyone at a petrol station.
There may be rules, but unless they have someone patrolling the forecourt then who is going to question you?

10 litres plastic and 20 litres metal is the usual limit. Many retailers specify a maximum number of cans to be filled. It's usually compulsory, and certainly common sense, to remove the can from the vehicle before filling.NB: You're not allowed to store more than 30 litres at home without a special licence so filling multiple cans can be problem! Also, your home insurance may well be void if you store any petrol indoors - so read the small print carefully.
