If you are bringing in a classic, you will not have to pay the duty + VAT on the whole enterprise.

Instead, you can apply for what is known as a Binding Tarrif Index exemption, which broadly means, that you only have to pay 5% of the price of the car + shipping + insurance as a duty.

A competent shipping agent will be able to apply for this on your behalf for a small fee, or if you feel brave, you can download the forms to apply yourself on the HM Customs and Excise website. A word of warning however, you might not get your BTI exemption if you fail to fill in the form correctly. I gave my shipping agent £50 to sort the paperwork, as failing to jump through all the hoops would have left me with a bill of several thousand pounds.

I brought a 1965 Porsche 356 SC in from Long Beach in May this year, and used Kingstown Shipping for all the handling at this end. I think that the shipping costs were just under £1,000 to get the car to Felixtowe, then about £300 handling at this end, inc. the BTI exemption application. I bought the car from a dealer in LA who ships cars regularly, and used their preferred agent to get the car onto a boat at that end.

Another vote for Kingstown. They do this all the time and can also arrange transport of the car from a dealer to the port. Getting my '73 911 from Florida to the UK was completely painless.

Thanks all..it would be a pre-impact Porsche so old enough for the 'exemption' I suspect.
