Perhaps a total re-design would be the quickest way rather than fire fighting all the time.
Surely both in tandom would be the ideal way to tackle this, which is what we are doing. Parts of the site we are redesigning, while continually working on making the hardware work better for PH.

We are looking at another major change to the system on 9th June which we anticipate to have a big performance boost for the site. In the meanwhile we are making small changes to keep the site running.

yes Are you saying you're redesigning the system with the intention of scrapping the current one? As the current one has proved itself incapable of the loads passed through it (but i could be wrong, i only go on what's said)

I am saying parts of the system need modifying to keep up with the changes to the load and use of the site. As the site evolves and its user base expands a system will always need tweaking and features adding or modifying.

Ditto that 2SB, maybe we could start a thread asking when will it be fixed. The last few months have really taken its toll, eventually when you have to spend a hour to read what should only take ten minutes it gets to you.

Garlick et al, how important are the forums to you in the overall scheme of things?

wavey back once its fixed. frown

But the problem is, either the site has a lot of problems with being upscaled, or there's a lot of bug hunting going on for a serious problem that no-one can work out.

From our side of the fence it feels like the upgrades are going slower than the increase in usage, meaning we're experiencing a relative devolution of the site, when in reality going from Ted to HM should have catapulted us into orbit.

Or do HM just see it as a 'pretty' sandbox to play with until something else comes along and therefore aren't giving the IT guys any room to fix it properly?

"Sorry, something's not quite right.
The technical team have been notified."

Well, no st Sherlock. Really?

I bet the the technical team haven't been notified or they'd need a dedicated server with a 1TB drive just to hold the notifications. rolleyes

Somehow I think you might not get an answer to that...

same deal every day - between 18.30 and 23.30 it's on the go slow

I very much doubt it's a big ask or particularly arduous piece of code to write

No i don't think i will, but i think i might strike a chord with them personally and perhaps they might feel an urge to push for what they need to fix it.

There's only so long you can go "we don't need more kit, it's being fixed" before people start thinking you are either incompetent (which they're not) or that you're towing the political company line because you can't get the kit you desperately need to keep the site functioning to a level where it remains useful and not a textbook example of management by accountants.

It's doing it again tonight.

Want to play "thread bingo"? Place your bets and and hit Ctrl-Refresh. If you can get the same post as the latest 3 times in a row you shout "HOUSE!" and down a shot of Vodka. First person to get drunk is a liar or else stopped playing and just drank the bottle through depression.
