Shhheeessshhh - can't you stop this Ted?
Discussion
Ted - I've been a long time follower of this site as it is still by far the best TVR resource available however I am getting more and more turned off by people coming onto the dedicated forums and slagging off cars they do not own.
I'm all for free speech but this is going too far. The have-nots, wanabees and disaster-by-proxy bunch (if you add up all those who complain about S6 reliability I'm sure the number would be greater than all the S6's sold) are ruining it for all of us. There are many cars I hate out there but I don't go on their forums and slag them off!
Can I suggest a voting system where you (i.e. we, the posters) can tag someone when they are being a pain. Too many tags and they get barred from a topic for a while? Or is there something in place already and I've missed it?

I've read some of the threads that I think you're talking about, and although I agree that the "all TVRs explode after 50 miles" comments get tiresome, I think that the "you don't own one, so shut up" is equally so.
The forums are surely meant for discussion, and a discussion of the problems that people have / haven't had would be more fruitful than simply gagging someone because you don't like what they're saying, in my opinion.

I see all types and brands of car get a slagging from time to time
4x4"s , MINIS , BMW , Mercedes, Porkers
So what its only other peoples opinions
TVR is a small company whos products sell mainly by word of mouth and repeat business. Excessive poorly informed comments are clearly damaging sales (see the T350 thread - the guy was put off by the comments on that thread).
The idea of a voting system is democracy in action - whats the problem with that?

Isn't that the point of discussion? To present both/all sides to a question? If you only allow people who deny that TVR have quality/relianility problems then surely the forum is misleading potential buyers?
TVR do not have a right to be in business other than that provided by selling cars (or being propped up by investment). If criticism, valid or otherwise, can destroy the company then it's too weak to survive anyway.
It's just like blamong Clarkson for Rover's demise. Apparently it was nothing to do with the steaming turds rolling off their production lines for years...

You're the worst for it as far as I can see. Word of mouth is what TVR has relied upon for a while and you slagging the new cars off all the time isn't helping a company that are in need. Where is the personal experience for most of your comments?

. . . that poor Smart lately.
I don't think thats what this post is about. Its easy to form an opinion of that, as the only way you can judge it is on visual appearance. Its when people come on and do things like say the flappy paddle gearbox in the Vanquish is awful just because JC says so. Have they ever been in a Vanquish? Or heard one? Or spoken to a driver? You can't form opinions on something that specialist unless you have had experience of it.
and before anyone has a go at me, yes I've spoken to a Vanquish driver, I've been in one and I've seen/heard one in action, and its fking awesome

Look you only have to browse this site for first hand accounts , so do not blame me
If you're on PH for some time (...) you know which posters to skip now don't ya?
I know it saves me time and energy.
Maybe the opposite of a mates-list then: tick the box of poster you want to skip in YOUR PH viewing
But then: I wouldn't miss some juicy bull rant if there was a good one some of you are masters. :don't put in the for the 3rd time now:

I doubt anyone was really put off a car just because some internet know-it-alls (or know-nothings) said it was ureliable.. I'm sure they can form their own opinions.
There will always be people who instantly say "don't get a Mercedes noone lets you out of junctions", "Ferraris break all the time", or indeed "TVRs are unreliable" and so on, but I don't think barring them is a solution (although the voting system you describe is quite a good one). As the other guy says, Jeremy Clarkson hates paddle change gearboxes, however I realise that he is a grumpy old man who doesn't like technology in general, so it doesn't really cloud my judgement of them; I'll form my own opinion when I get the opportunity.
Besides, usually these things are based on a little truth .
Additionally anyone who does buy (or not) a car based on what some internet nerds say, is perhaps not the customer TVR wants anyway? Perhaps TVR could acknowledge their reputation and convince the cynics that they are reliable.

how about a newbies point of view ? I came here with a vague interst in TVRs and on the cerb forum i got real straight forward answers from owners which has made me now think twice i would rather have that than buy something with rose tints on .
I would love a Tuscan but i am not well off enough to take the risk of the S6 problems and i am now thinking of a Griff so in short the honest replies have helped but the recent obvious wind ups and baiting has put me off posting more regularly. Dont get me wrong i have broad shoulders but just cant be arsed with net nerds or Trolls as you call them here

I don't think the voting system would work, the first problem is that this forum has a large population of certain manufacturers cars and hence and slur against the majority correct or not would result in the some person getting banned!.
Take a look at Gorvid's poll in the which car thread and see how many TVR votes there are, exactly the same would happen to people who said something against the TVR fraternity and eventually you would end up with a stale forum of people saying the same thing.

It's a scheme that seems to work on other forum based sites (b3ta for example), be it a ban idea or a system where you can ignore people.
Put it this way, if you don't do it, people will go off and form specific forum sites such as vx220.org. I made the mistake of going on that forum (while owning a VX220T I might add) and asking whether anyone though the car was as rubbish as I did. Talk about being flamed! Anyway, the point I'm making is what is wrong with having a site where the general concensus is that the product is fine albeit flawed? Why have other people from other marques come into your forum and making generally exaggerated claims and talking your marque down. Its like turning up at a concert then slagging the band off at the top of your voice.
Sure, everyone's entitled to their own opinion but what happened to good manners? You're not proving anything to anyone by ranting about something you know very little about.
Criticism is fine if its constructive. Pain in the @rse if its just criticism for the sake of it.
