I wasn’t going to drive it much now we’re in lockdown, that in its own right and I’d have left it taxed in case an excuse to drive it did come up, but now they’re salting the roads and the st weather in general, just figured better in my pocket than the governments

This is SOOO painful. Not being able to drive the car is not working out too well. Even the missus has said I'm a fricking nightmare right now and puts it down to not going out to get it out of my system. I do have a mental issue I know.

I got it out of the garage to take a snow picture smile

Anyway, pretty sure I'm going to re-tax it next month. I'll wait for an opportunity to drive it first. Although with lockdown and I'm not going to take the piss, there won't be much opportunity! Can see me stretching it out to March. I do think maybe just try to be patient, then when Spring has sprung and lockdown is relaxed, I'll drive the st out of it to make up for it smile

Plans for this year: NC500, Nurburgring, Alps trip, north Wales and lots of early morning drives out locally.

What big trips does anyone else have for this year?

So with lockdown and the stty weather / salty roads, I've not been out in the 720 since 30th December. So decided to do its bedroom up tongue out I've always loved the idea of having a really smart garage, just like a room in the house. However, I've got lots of tools, wheels etc that I need to keep in there, so I'd never have it as de-cluttered as some you see on here. So thought rather than throwing 1000's at it, I'll just go for some quick / low cost wins. So a couple of cans of masonry paint and a weekend, and I painted all the walls white. That made a really decent difference. But the floor needed doing as well. I had some of those foam tiles down, but they'd gone flat in places and although better than concrete, I wanted something better. And felt that would make a really big difference. So did a bit of research and ordered some heavy duty, plastic tiles. For my double, inc delivery, they cost £715. Very happy with them.

So less than £800 and a couple of weekends. Really happy with the outcome. Although I have the bug a bit now so getting some quotes to put a ceiling in, with downlights etc, with a loft hatch so I can store stuff up there too. Could be a slippery slope! Would like some roller shutter doors too but in reality, I'd prefer to spend my "car money" on the cars / enjoying the cars. We'll see. Here are a couple of before and after pictures:

That makes such a difference and looks ace! I plan to do the same to mine - I've just got the grey breeze blocks currently which look a bit drab. Do you have a link to the tiles? I assume they offer different patterns?
I bought them from a company called Garage Kings. Friendly to deal with and delivery was fast. As for patterns, they have different colours?

Have you been looking at my browsing history? Was literally looking at flooring like that last night!

I've been doing up my garage in lockdown and the floor seems a next logical step.

Also - I have two garage doors and with the width of the 12C Im thinking a single big roller door is the answer - particularly as my next planned steed is a 720. I think it is wider with the mirrors folded than the 12C with mirrors folded (and that is tight enough).

It’s a tight fit getting through a single door, about 10-15mm space by the wing mirrors (when open) Its ok though, reversing in is way enough, the visibility is very good in the 720.

Having said that, like you I’d love to convert it to one single door. It’s not a small job though and I’ve had guideline costs ranging from £3,500 to £5,000 inc the door.

I was tempted by the porcelain tiles, they look fantastic. The reason I like these plastic tiles is they go down really easily (no adhesive or grouting) and can just as easily be taken up, so if you need to replace one or move home.... Also, if you leave the door open and some rain water gets in, you don’t die when you walk back in! (They have open groves to let liquid through)

Good value too, my garage is just under 30sqm, with edging and delivery just £715.

This picture you can see the groves.....

Yes sorry, can see a few have asked. I used The Garage Kings, based in Belfast. Friendly to deal with. However they are out out stock of a lot of the black items. I need some more edging but they’ve told me no stock until April!

One day I may see you gaining on me in my rear view (but only on the straights smile)
You'd be surprised, on our uneven roads, probably due to the trick suspension negating the need for anti-roll bars, I can corner quicker in the 720s than in my S2 Exige, and that has Nitrons and a much wider track than oem. I can also brake later too, again probably due to the suspension and the aero keeping everything smooth? Honestly, it's phenomenal how capable it is. On a smooth circuit, I imagine that active suspension has less of advantage, ie anti-roll bars are less of a compromise, so probably on a smaller, tighter circuit it will have less of an advantage?

Some think all the jostling they get from regular suspensions makes the car “feel alive”

But as I have been posting on here (650, in my case), once you get tuned to the sensations from your fingers and backside, the proactive suspension actually filters out the “noise” from bumpy tracks so you actual get a clearer signal of what each corner is doing.
And that makes perfect sense, anti-roll bars connect the two wheels together, so if your nearside wheel goes over a bump, it affects the offside wheel too. So that offside wheel, as well as dealing with its own bumps, turn-in etc, it's having to deal with being pulled around by what the nearside is doing. Keep them independent, so they can focus just on their own job, you can see why that works so much better and will give the driver a more accurate feel of what is going on and where.

<goes off to remove the roll bars from the cars> tongue out

A month since the last update and I've now re-taxed it! Had a few essential trips out.....I've really missed driving this car. Popped out for some breakfast at a local'ish pub, they have turned their car park into a drive through where you can buy really nice breakfast bagles and coffee.....

Love having PPF smile

Running with the spoiler down is really growing on me. The back looks wider, more squat I think. The main benefit is you get to see it moving around in your rear view mirror even more. When in the Aero / up position, you only see it move when you're hard on the brakes. But when it's down, light breaking it pops up, just backing off the accelerator or even going around corners sometimes, it pops up to provide a little downforce.

Planning on using this car a lot over summer, covid permitting. NC500, hopefully an Alps trip then back over in November for a trip to LeMans etc. And no doubt lots in between.

Been a month since my last update, been out in it at every given opportunity, but aside from that not a lot to report. It's funny, according to a number of trolls on here and Facebook, I should have broken down at least 3 times by now, it should have gone up in flames at least twice and spent more time with the dealer than in my garage wavey

Best advice I can give to anyone considering a Mclaren or considering their 1st supercar, don't listen to all the crap you read on forums, on Facebook etc, , you'll miss out on one of the best driving experiences you can have. Talk to real owners and ex-owners, not all these keyboard warriors with a grudge or views / followers to obtain.

Anyway, I've got loads of pictures of my antics over the last few months, here are a couple of my favourites:

This one was from a drive in my local area, just got up early one morning, the sun was out, f**k it, lets get the Mac out of the garage and just go for a drive on some great B empty roads. 2hrs later and almost a full tank of fuel later I arrived back home feeling on top of the world, I so love this car:

This one was from an organised meet and drive with the Supercar Breakfast Club. There are so many of these clubs out there, thought I'd give one a go that is a pay as you go type, no large annual subscription, see what they're all about. I'm not into the whole anorak thing, I like to enjoy driving the cars and didn't want anything too pretentious, so this was the perfect opportunity to see what the whole supercar club thing is like. Colin the organiser is a really friendly guy, the event was well organised and the people were friendly. We had a 2hr drive around the Rutland, Leicestershire area. Being totally honest, the driving was a little tame for my liking, bonus, got the best fuel economy I've ever had on a run biggrin The photographer they organised got a great picture of my car with Belvoir Castle in the background - all felt very British smile

Hopefully going to have a summer of getting out loads in the car. SupercarFest the Runway next month, at Sywell, that should be good fun. NC500, maybe out to Germany and the Alps later in the year but that may have to get parked for next year. Lots of drive outs no doubt. Also need to get out in my P&J too, brought it out of hibernation this month, do love driving this as well....

If anyone is interested in seeing all my other pictures I put more up on Instgram: marknash99 https://www.instagram.com/marknash99/

Another fun drive out just for the sake of it at the weekend, well sort of. The Lotus dealer in Nottingham was having a new showroom open day so used that as an excuse to drive out. On the way back, after I inadvertently took some single track roads in my search for some twisties, I found this beautiful village with some an impressive flowering wall, so I did what any self respecting supercar owner would do, I ditched the car in the middle of the road to get some pictures.....

Really happy with how they've turned out. The colour of this amazes me all the time and I forgot how much it pops in sunlight, the silky metallic finish really shows off all the curves.... and the 720 has them in an abundance.

Really like this one. If you follow the crease from the bonnet, you can really see how the air is sent over the doors to the rear, can just imagine it in a wind tunnel with the smoke following that line..... And that bulge on the rear quarter, hadn't noticed that before!

I know the 720s's styling isn't for everyone, especially the front light arrangement, but I really do think it is one of the most beautiful and unique cars available today, there is nothing like it..... but I'm biased smile Still struggling to see where I would go from this car. 765 is an obvious route I suppose, but I'm not totally convinced on it. The 765 looks amazing, but I like the clean lines on the 720, the additional aero pieces on the 765 disrupt that some what. Still looks great, I just like them both, not sure on looks alone if it would be worth the additional spend. Performance, well, of course I'd love that. However, the gearing, would it actually make it less useable on our roads? Track yeah, but roads? Shame they don't supply a version with the same gearing as the 720 for those who are not going to go on track. Again, not a negative really, just is it worth a 720s plus £100k+? For me I don;t see it. 765LT spider?....... gain the roof off experience as well?....... that could be tempting smile But for now, I still see my 720 as a forever car smile

So this was an unexpected expense of Mclaren ownership........ didn't realise where the car sleeps would become important smile

So earlier in the thread I put up pictures of some basic / easy garage improvements, new floor and white washing the walls. Well now I've got the bug. So as well as making it more versatile, I like the idea of being able to pull a car in there at an angle and get my detailing on smile So that pesky middle post had to go:

This.....

...started to become this.......

Then a nice remote controlled roller shutter door, no more having to keep getting in and out of Mclaren every time I pull out or in to the garage (1st world problems)

It didn't stop there, now I'm thinking about humidity levels (starting to get a bit obsessive now) so bought a decent dehumidifier with smart / wifi controls, I can even keep an eye on temp and humidity in the garage, change settings, set up schedules etc all from the app on my phone smile (love a gadget)_

So now the Mclaren and its bed mate get to enjoy a humidity / temperature controlled garage. I think I need to get myself checked! That being said, I think I'm going to get a proper ceiling put in there, get it insulated and boarded with hatch to store stuff up there. Then some nice LED lights. Then I might move in there biggrin

Good prompt, thanks smile And sorry for the lack of updates! To summarise, still loving the 720. It's almost a year since I bought it and I'm still in that honeymoon phase! Any excuse to use it, I'll use it. And plans to use it, even if its just to pick the missus up from the station, I find myself looking forward to it so much! To the point where if plans change I get in a right mood! biggrin Seriously (I actually think I may have a problem)

Anyway, following on from my last post where I was updating the garage, that is pretty much finished now. Twin entrance to wide single, electric roller shutters and now a ceiling with loft area.

My helmets were taking up quite a bit of racking so found them a home, really like the way that's turned out (I'm easily pleased)

Next thing is to somehow find a way of tidying up all that storage area at the back.

I've been out loads in it over the summer. At the weekend I attended Silverstone Classic with the Sporting Bears giving "dream rides" for a children's charity. That was really good. First time I've done anything with them, didn't know what to expect. When I arrived they said they'd be putting a minimum donation of £60 on my car. I thought I'd hardly get any bookings. However before they even opened they had 3 people book, by the end of the day I'd given 13 rides and raised £800! Managed to burn through about £130 of fuel and gained a chip on my windscreen (which has since been repaired) It was a lot of fun taking people out, they loved it. I enjoyed driving and taking about the car all day, and we raised money for a good cause. I'll definitely do that again.

Only picture I got that day, next to two others giving rides

Then joined the Mclaren Owners Club this week, to see what that's all about. Meeting a couple of local (ish) members for an early drive out over the weekend. That is where I get most of the use out of it, I get up really early in the morning and just go for a drive when the roads are nice and empty.

Oh, annual service is next up. Planning to take it back to McManchester for that as this one is complimentary. Bit of a long slap to get there for me, but I'll take the scenic route across the peaks so not too much of a hardship smile

Hey all. Sorry for the lack of updates, been too busy enjoying it! smile

So just had my 1 year anniversary with the car, over 7,000 miles covered and enjoyed every minute. Reliability wise its been great. I picked up a chip in the windscreen at that charity event, a few weeks later a stress crack appeared. Fortunately this happened just before it went in for its annual service so a new windscreen fitted under warranty - result! Picked up some chips and a light scuff on a few of the alloys, McManchester refurbed them all (to ensure a good match) free of charge! Talk about going above and beyond! Their new premises is very impressive, they also have their own bodyshop now, probably why they were able to do that with the wheels. I know its only something minor, but it makes good business sense. They're not my local dealer and now I've had my complimentary service I could well be tempted to use a more local dealer, but they've built up some goodwill with me now. Other dealers should take note!

Anyway, no plans to sell the car, just can't see what I would go to around the price point. Even if I put another £50-75k towards it?? I've put a deposit down on an Emira, depending how that works out I might look to swap them both out for a Spider at some point, I do miss having the roof down.

I'll try to update this more frequently. Few pictures, 'cos everyone loves pictures...

Great shot my a photographer friend at CarNatter:

And one I took on my phone whilst watching him do his thing....

A picture with my little track toy:

SupercarFest @ Shelsley Walsh - that was fun!

A rare shot when they're all at home at the same time!!....

Just half of McManchester new service centre!

No that’s not what I said. I said it had a chip, but then a stress crack appeared, that’s why they replaced the windscreen under warranty

I suspect two separate things are being connected here.

Although stone chips obviously can cause cracks in windscreens, the OP mentioned a stone chip - and then later, a stress crack appeared. Stress cracks in 720 windscreens (from the edge) are not that uncommon, and are usually replaced under warranty.

I assume that the crack the OP mentioned was one of these, and the crack was not from the stone chip. It was just a happy coincidence on timing that the stress crack appeared after the stone chip and hence resulted in a new windscreen that solved both.
Exactly this, I thought that was clear in my original rundown but I suppose it always is when you write it! smile

The stress crack was unrelated to the stone chip, was in a different part of the windscreen.

Ok, 15months into my ownership and 8,000 miles - and for the first time I'm feeling a little less confident about the long term ownership potential of a Mclaren. I openly admit to being a little fickle though.

Anyway, so the car went for its service a few months back, as per the above had the windscreen replaced due to a stress crack. Within a month of it coming back, I noticed a crack had appeared in the gorilla/roof glass. Ok, no big deal, I had hoped I had avoided this pitfall but obviously not. Still within the manufacturer's warranty so I knew it wasn't going to be a problem claiming. I'd sorned the car and although I could stick tax on it again for another month, I didn't really want to plough another 300 mile round trip taking it to McManchester. So McManchester put a call into Mclaren customer care who agreed to come and pick it up and take it to a dealer of my choice (impressed with that!)

So as they're loading the car up, I noticed the corner of one of my front wings had bubbling! The corrosion issue had got to me too. So in the space of a couple of months, my windscreen and roof glass had suffered stress cracks and front wings had corroded - my 720s was becoming a bloody cliche!
Anyway, checked the other side, same thing (not quite as bad though) Again, this will get sorted under warranty, McManchester said they're re-do the PPF and the ceramic coating too.

Now I know overall it's not a big deal, it's not costing me anything apart from being without the car (and the garage space is handy right now) and the issues are not the sort that leaves you stranded by the side of the road, so could be so much worse. And let's face it, Mclaren has been great at sorting the issues, so no complaints there. But what concerns me is are these are issues that could re-occur and do so when I don't have warranty coverage? How confident am I that replacing the glass will be the end of the problem, or is the root cause still there and this will just re-occur? Same with painting the front wings? And at the end of the 3yr warranty, which expired today, I don't believe these issues would be covered? (I'm now on an extended warranty until December 2022. Glass is covered by insurance I suppose.

So I don't know, maybe see how things go next year. I had pretty much decided I'd trade up to a 720s Spider this time next year, but now my honeymoon bubble has been burst somewhat and my perception of long term Mclaren ownership put into question, I'm starting to consider whether scratching an itch with a different brand may be a better route to take?
