After a bit of umming and ahhing, I’ve chosen the leaf over an I3. Mainly because I couldn’t get a test drive of an I3 for live nor money!

On the flip side, it’s not my money - it’ll be a company car so the BIK appealed hugely come April time.

I was wondering if anyone else had one? I’m having a 7kW podpoint charger installed this month and the car is due in Feb. Anything to look out for or best practices? I’ve test driven a lower spec Leaf and was impressed, not a thorough or long rest drive but I’ll be doing a 75 mile trip each work to and from work. Will I make it without charging? There’s a point near to my work but it’s a council one so anyone could be using it and I can’t trust it’ll always be working.

Appreciate any information for an EV newbie!

Evening all, thanks for the feedback, greatly appreciated.
The commute is going to be 90% dual carriageway both ways with just a short amount of city driving. Sadly the Tesla isn’t available at my grade, the grade above it is but not mine. It was the leaf, I3 (not the s) or the zoe which I wrote off due to the mileage and size.

Glad to hear my worries about the mileage aren’t warranted, it really was my biggest concern coming from combustion engines and I guess it’s most peoples main worry.

My home charger is going to be a 7kW Pod Point job which seems fine to my untrained eye!
Is there specialty electric companies that I should look at? I’m sure I’d read about people using specific ones as they offer cheaper electricity in the evening and overnight?

Interesting. I was told i'd been given a February delivery slot so i'll follow that up with our Fleet team. Who is your car through? Ours are all through LexAutoLease. Good to hear about the I3 and if I had a shorter commute I definitely would have tried harder to get a seat in an I3.
Went to the site i'll be starting at in February permanently and the charging point had two vehicles at it already so it's good to know that if I can't get to charge it during the day then I could get to work and home each day without having to stop somewhere on the way home for a few extra kW.

Also realised today I didn't get a colour choice so presume it'll be white, that'll be a surprise when it turns up on the driveway.

OP is doing about 34K mile p.a. commuting
Near enough, February - September will be c150miles a day and after that it will be less but i'd be on par for over 30K in a year if I kept it up.

Some real conflict now. Some saying i'll get the 150 miles on one charge, others saying i'll have to charge half way or on the way back! Obviously ideally i'd not charge half way but if I have to then I have to because I really don't want to have to charge on the way home. Of my 75 miles each way, 50 of it is average speed cameras so i'll be sitting at 70mph then maybe i'll have to sit at 62-65mph and just accept it's going to take longer to get to work and back each day.

I really need a 24hr test drive and to do the drive one day I think.

I can only dream of 22*, I live in Aberdeen FFS! Although we've had a mild winter, today was cold and like you say I really don't want to be charging on my way home. Sadly I've pulled the trigger and chosen the vehicle but if it arrives and it isn't fit for purpose I do have the ability to return it. Guess i'll have to wait and see!

I spoke to our fleet time too and they said the car is still due to Nissan at the end of January, PDI'd and delivery scheduled for early Feb.

50 miles at 70mph takes just shy of 43 minutes. Doing it at 60mph takes 50 minutes. Not a huge difference, and one you're unlikely to really notice.

Although I don't know the road, I would be surprised if you maintained 70mph continuously for the 50-mile stretch. It's easier to set the cruise a little lower and make fewer speed adjustments. Secondly, you'll likely find yourself meeting the cars who just overtook you a little later down the road if the traffic slows or if there are junctions/roundabouts.
Fair point re times and speeds, i'll be going against the flow of traffic both ways as most will be commuting into Aberdeen in the morning and then out of in the evening, i'll be doing the opposite so once I reach the edge of the city I do expect to be able to sit with the cruise on at 60mph+ for the next 50 miles until I reach my turn off.

I'll definitely be doing all of the pre heating before I leave and it will take time to adjust to using less heating and cooling and interesting point about heated seats!

I noticed watching the youtube videos that the guy uses the LeafSpy app, does anyone else use it?

So I did a very non scientific test today. I drove to where i'll be working come February and where i'll be expecting (hoping!) the Leaf can get me to and home without a part charge.

From leaving the house at 0645 it was 7 miles of driving around the outskirts of road between 30-40mph then 61 miles of dual carriageway and then the final 3 miles on a B road. The 61 miles of dualler I managed a 64mph average as the road is nearly completely average speed cameras and the last 3 miles of B road was about a 30mph average as I don't know it well and it's quite twisty.

On the way home I took the exact same route but this time it was raining, wipers on constantly and on full when overtaking lorries. I managed 62mph on the way home and the final 7 miles driving the outskirts at 17mph because of rush hour traffic.

141 miles in total so I should be ok with range and a bit of leftover battery should I need it.

A late reply but last Thursday the Leaf arrived! Considering it was the first or second week of January that I placed my order it’s been a long wait!

It was out straight into action the following day to complete a hundred mile site visit and that’s all I’ve driven it but I’m well impressed.

It’s come specced to the hills with BOSE, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel and the best bit, it’s not white! Cayenne Red I believe is the colour. When lockdown is lifted and I’m able to regularly drive it I’ll be able to say more but for now, it’s a nice ornament on the driveway.

The Nissan connect app... I’m really struggling with it. Has anyone had success? It’s stuck hanging at 19/32 services connected so I can’t see and don’t have any access to the remote charging or pre heating / cooling. Any tips?

A lot of people have trouble with the app, keep pestering the dealer seems to be the solution. They have to activate something on their end.

One tip I didn't see posted, look at the battery percentage rather than the GOM. The battery percentage is linear and as you get used to how many miles you can do per 1% on various roads you will find it's the best estimate of range. Also very handy if you know that from A to B you need X%.
I noticed that just from the one journey I did last week that the battery % was going to be more accurate. Looking forward to getting out an about a bit more and using the car in the coming weeks.
