Recently I bought an EV car from a trader where they couldn't locate the v5. They eventually located and emailed me a photocopy. A week or 2 later I emailed them and asked them to forward it to me via post, theyve said that as soon as they emailed me a copy they then disposed of the original.

Now, its not in my name and I don't plan to put it in my name as I now want to sell the car. I've had it a month (i know, i know!) Great little car but not for me.

So when i come to sell this...

Do people generally feel ok seeing a photocopy of the v5 and then putting it in their name in front of them on the dvla website?

Or is it best to apply for the V5.

If i apply for the V5 i was thinking to apply as a trader, will this bump up the previous keepers from 1 to 2? or not, do they send a fresh logbook or not?

How would you feel if you went to buy a car that the previous owned had owned for just a few weeks, and couldn't provide a V5C to show they actually own the car they're selling? I think I'd feel a scam coming and would walk away, but you might find somebody who's comfortable.

I think you'll have an easier life by getting a replacement V5C, in your name, before you sell the car.
I personally wouldn't mind, as long as I can watch them transfer it into my name on the dvla website.

If you bought it from a trader, what makes you think that they haven't already fulfilled their legal obligation to notify the DVLA that you are the new keeper?
Ok. Sorted then.

In these circumstances OP if I was looking at that car I would assume you are a driveway trader OP even if that isn't the case, a V5 which isn't in your name and at your address would ring alarm bells to me personally.
Is there something wrong with being a driveway trader? and if I was, i'll surely be more familiar with this scenario?

I’m guessing OP is a trader but irrespective of that as per the other replies I’d still want to see an original V5 and not a photocopy.
As a seller, the dvla told me, if you had a v5 and you are transfering it to a new keeper, you must destroy the v5 and transfer the vehicle into the new keepers name online. So, whether you want to see the v5 or not, you don't get to keep it.
