What ad? have you got a URL please?

I was referring to the 1900 cc Hyabusa 4 cylinder at the start of this thread.

Aaaahhhh! yep that does sound like a rebuild waiting to happen, that V8 looks the mutts though, can only imagine how much that will be.......mind you with a lump of alloy and a cnc machine I reckon I could knock my own up.............................................Not!

Just had a hunt for and read the other threads (I only lurk on this forum)... Hmm, the man certainly seems to have his own agenda! But enough about him, Had a peek at the AS One news. I can't believe I missed it at the show and this is the first I've seen of it. Looks *very* nice.

Personally I find the new 'extreme track cars' (XTR2 and SR3) very nice to look at but not very practical. Now I know that's not the idea but as far as I'm concerned they are pure track cars. You compromise them by making them road legal (raising the ride height, adding unnecessary weight in order to get them through SVA, yada, yada). Though I can understand why both of them will sell as well. The Radical is a pure racer and people who want that and have deep enough pockets will go for it. The Westfield is out there for the kit car builder who want to build something different to a 7 clone and end up with a bloody quick track car at the end of it. Just don't try and convince me that either are road cars, because they ain't (not to mention the fact that you'd look a complete knob driving them on the road).

As for the competition, the AS One seems to fit neatly between the Elise and a Caterfield. A little less road car than an Elise but a little more than a Caterfield. Could be a top compromise for the buyer who wants something they can blat at the weekend but also drive to a trackday, tool it 'round, then get you home.

No it will not be as quick as a Radical but then I don't see that as it's competition. The cars it is most like in intention are Caterfields. Also you do not *need* the fastest car in the world for trackdays (unless you have something to prove) what you do want is the most fun which comes from how it drives. Point in case: Tooling around Anglesey yesterday in my Westie and it was a complete blast, went out in a friends £1000 1.6 205 Gti later and it was every bit as much fun. Nowhere near as quick but the balance that car had was a scream. 4 wheel drifts around every corner, nimble as hell.

Also if you want a race car for trackdays, your money would be better spent on an old Formula Ford Zetec or a Formula Vauxhall Lotus. £7k will buy you a decent car that will absolutely fly. That's half the price of an R500 engine!

Sadly the AS One would not be an option for me. It's simply too expensive for me to consider as a toy. If I blow up my engine (as I have done) or stuff my Westie I can repair them relatively cheaply. I would simply be too paranoid to push £40k of car around a circuit at 10/10ths. Thats not to say that it's not a good choice, it's just one for people with bigger pockets than me.

But I would like to see that engine in it! It'll never get fitted to a cheap car anyhow as the price of the lump is gonna be so prohibitive. But cars like this SHOULD be made. For the same reasons TVR's exists as they are. Simply because they can...

...and so some kind hearted soul can let me have a go

I disagree to a certain extent they are not practical but neither is a caterfield or a bike. I would put these types of cars in that bracket. ie lots of fun for a weekend run and to play on track if you desire. As for looking a knob who cares I've seen caterfields with no windscreen driven with helmets, and whos to say an ultima driver is a knob (and thats just as much a track car). I wouldn't give a sh@t what people thought, Full face helmet, gloves, and a big cheasy grin.

Certainly I can see me building a car that is that impractical in the future. Keep the mini for day to day, drive the race car for a giggle at weekends. I've also seen a single seater BEC for the road (unfortunately they're off line till later on this year) but certainly these kit cars are looking good at the moment.

After finding out at the weekend that I don't fit in a single seater *blushes* suddenly things like the XTR2 start to look all the more tempting. Something for the future maybe...
