Went out for a bit of a razz tonight and got to know the car a bit better.

Handling wise, it's pretty sweet. Feels nice and direct but with the awful tyres on it you never feel particularly safe. Destabilising it mid corner makes it wobble like mad.

Oddly, it's not that slow. It doesn't feel as lively as the old 205 which was so so eager, but it picks up speed fairly well (I even managed an overtake!) and sounds quite rorty high in the rev range (like a sewing machine with a sore throat, I thought).

If you have the audacity to have the blower on and go round a corner it makes a funny noise at you. I had a bit of a scare when parking up for a slash - smoke coming out of the front grill. Not loads but enough to st me up a bit. Popped the bonnet open and had a look around but couldn't for the life of me work out where it was coming from. It seemed to be emanating from the passenger side headlight, but as far as I could tell nothing there was on fire... Possibly from the brakes as I'd been slowing on a longish fastish downhill but couldn't see anything there either. Didn't do it at any other time later on.

There's also a worrying sound from the dash. At first I thought it was a trapped leave being rustled about behind there but it still happens with the heater off. It sounds more like a sparking noise, so perhaps loose wiring.

The alternator belt is squealing.

And it seems to be surging forward momentarily when being driven on a steady throttle on the flat. It's only just detectable but a bit annoying.

And finally(!) it turns out the speedo does wobble after all hehe At about 65 it just flicks between 60 and 70 as if it's confused.

Overall: it's good! smile What I like about it so much is that it feels so much tighter than every other previous car. With the Rallye if I did 'the wiggle' to check it was in gear, the stick would flop around all over the place. With the 309 it just sits there solidly, with no play at all (not bad for 24 years old). And it doesn't clonk or creak or feel like the wheels are about to fall off. Quite reassuring really.

As long as it stops....

I've always said that if the brakes on a banger are working, the rest not working isn't usually going to kill you.

I think we need Twazzock as a journalist on PH. I could see him now having written a front page article on the new Ferrari FF:

"It's a bit like my 205 was really. Just a bit quicker and the head gasket didn't go on me when I test drove it."

biggrin

I can only apologise for constantly referring to the 205, but it really was the pinnacle of my car history thus far! It may have been cosmetically awful and depressingly short lived but it was pure, unadulterated fun while it lasted. If someone offered me the 205 back or a new Ferrari I know what I'd have wink

Forgot to mention the 106 sold on eBay last night. £566 which isn't a bad loss considering it's now considerably more fked that when I picked it up. And I've not included the pile of parts I got with it, so once they're flogged I might even be in profit! Only thing is the winner was a 0-feedbacker. It's OK though, he reassures me "im not messin u about, i want the car for my winnin bid ... 100 percent wont it has i am the winnin bidder". Also said the deposit would be in my Paypal first thing this morning; it wasn't and still isn't. irked

Quite possibly. Just had my camera stolen by two fking s who distracted me whilst I was fiddling with the car. I can handle the mechanical maladies but being stolen from is a deeply unpleasant feeling. I am fking furious.
I know the feeling. I got blindingly drunk one night, and had to be carried home. The 2 people who took me home then robbed my place while I was passed out. Still, I woke up fully dressed, so I guess it could have been alot worse.

Oh and just stick the 106 in the PH classifieds. It's how I sold my last 2 cars when ebay failed miserably.

Or message the 2nd highest bidder?

The second-highest bidder collected on Monday, nice bloke smile

309 is still spot on and I'm loving it, even with just little trips around town. Got 350 miles to do this weekend so I'll report back if it explodes or anything like that. Checked the MOT history yesterday which was quite reassuring. Goes back to 2005 and all it's failed on is a tyre and numberplate bulb! Had advisories for oil leak and CV joint but they've disappeared so must have been sorted at some point. Most years only picked up 100-300 miles between tests(! was on 37k in '05) but then did 2-3k a year for a couple of years in the hands of the previous owner I think.

Bought some bits and bobs for some fiddling, will try and update when I've done them but that's dependent on me cadging a camera and finding the time...

Just one question Twaz... How come, considering all of the gaskit failures and new cars, you haven't saved up just a little more money and bought something more reliable, rather than a series of un reliable cars. Having said that, your stories do make me laugh. I've even bookmarked the thread! hehe

Every breakdown is an opportunity! There's no fun in reliability (this is what I tell myself to hold back the bitter tears of financial destitution through awful, awful cars wink)

My journey at the weekend was a great success. Did a lot of it at 90mph with no grumblin' at all.

Picked these up on the way home:

Back in Leeds I got some more rimz from a nice man (sans tyres this time)

He even threw in two sets of front discs for free!

Gone through a tank of fuel now, averaged 35mpg which isn't bad. Hopefully I can get it up a bit with a bit of servicin':

(also got a CV joint on the way from elsewhere)

And these rear shocks! (£30 posted):

And I'm considering this head, then getting it skimmed, ported & polished... scratchchin it's only £20

I had a go at Waxoyling last week but it was quite unsuccessful as it was a bit nippy out, so it came out like silly string rather than spraypaint. I will be trying again when I get a chance, with the cans warmed up beforehand. I'll also be fitting the first set of wheels for the time being to see how they do. The steels will probably go back on for winter though.

I'm still cameraless but there's one in the post for me. It's a film camera though so don't expect updates any time soon hehe

So yeah, loads of money spent, no actual progress.

Excellent reading Twazzock! This is hilarious stuff, although I do feel like you are REALLY due some good karma, not because you make poor choices in cars (you do, it's mainly your fault!) but with the vandalism and theft on top, it's not cool frown Played the lottery recently? I would if I were you!

Seriously though, you ever thought about saving some pennies and buying a semi reliable car, rather than a string of stboxes? Get the 309 serviced, and stop spending money on the bugger, run it into the ground and use the money saved to buy something semi reliable AND semi fun to drive?

Also, this:

On the back of that^^ I have actually stuck a few quid on the lottery for tomorrow, might as well seeing as I've gone a few weeks without a breakdown biggrin

I reckon the 309 is going to prove to be reliable AND fun. Obviously not had it long but it's not complained at all and I've not stopped grinning at hooning it all over the place at approximately 3 miles per hour. Granted, it's awful in just about every measurable aspect and not very PH, but an enjoyable stbox is not a stbox I'm in any hurry to get rid of.

I do occasionally have sensible thoughts. Originally the plan was to hold on to the ZX until the end of uni (3 whole years!) and buy something nice with the saved pennies. Then that seemed very dull and I thought I'd hold on to it until Feb at least (insurance renewal) then bag myself a 205 GTi. Then the 106 appeared... hehe

Resisting the urge to spend money on it is quite difficult, but the bits I've bought so far are easily removed and flogged back on for the same price, or just downright bargains as there's not exactly a big demand for Peugeot 309 bits! Most expensive single item so far has been the first set of wheels, but they're worth it solely for the better/wider tyres (my only worry is that the increased weight will stunt the already stunted performance...) Dreams of engine/suspension swaps are whirling around in my head but they'll be stopped by lack of funds, mechanical expertise and insurability thankfully. smile (imagine it though: Mi16 engine, track-orientated suspension, semi-slicks on wide steels with the original trims, stripped interior etc., all in that body that even yer grandad would be embarrassed to drive. fk yeah)

GOOD NEWS EVERYBODY! The 309 still isn't broken.

I've done 1400 miles in the 5 weeks I've owned it and nothing has gone wrong. Fuel consumption has been steadily decreasing (now on a high of 40mpg! very happy with that) despite me ragging it ever more thoroughly. Blower still makes a noise on corners and there's still that crackling noise under the dash if I've got the lights on. And still a grin plastered all over my face. Love the thing.

Gave it a good scrub down and dose of underseal today, as well as new air filter a couple of weeks back. Still haven't got round to the plugs/filter/oil/wheels I've bought! Pictures asap, as soon as I've filled up this film and got it developed.

Until then, ta ra. xxx

P.S. Mods if you're reading this and you've got a sec could you pop '- Peugeot 309' in the title just so people know what they're looking at before they click. Thanks!)

Oddly enough it's three months to the day and the 309 hasn't had a single mishap yet, happy days!

Only problem with that is I don't really have much to say here. hehe (cue long rambling post about nothing much at all)

Done a few bits and bobs.

Put 14" steels on leftover from my old ZX as a bit of an experiment. Seems to handle a lot better, ride isn't too hampered but it's noticeably more reluctant to pick up speed. Don't think it's doing too much for fuel economy either (although I have been doing a lot of town miles recently and am quite enthusiastic with the accelerator pedal whistle 30.5mpg over the last tank, my worst yet).

Before:

After - 4x4-esque ground clearance:

(I still have the funky hubcaps, don't worry, just decided to preserve them over winter)

Gave the interior a good clean one afternoon, it scrubbed up very nicely even though I was using Aldi caravan cleaner and a j-cloth. Did the engine bay too which perhaps required slightly tougher cleaning fluid (summert for another day) but it looks pretty sweet for 25 years old nearly.

Before:

After:

Inner arches and under rear lights are spotless (common rust spots on 309s. this is pre-cleaning btw!)

Didn't bother with the outside, not really my 'thing' to have a clean car hehe it's pretty filthy, much more so than in the pictures. Suits it I think.

Found a couple of things under the seats, the radio which is possibly original? Wiring is all wrong though and it's been damaged:

Top of the gearknob which I haven't bothered glueing back on so now it's gone back into hiding under the passenger seat (can also see the CD player there, I'm sure I gave that away with the ZX but it seems to have reappeared back in my pile of car tat at some point... quite glad of it as now I can have banging choons on long journeys rather than just wind noise and engine buzz. Someone gave me a HMV voucher for Christmas, which would normally just get lost or thrown away as I don't really buy CDs, but I thought I'd splurge so now I have Grandmaster Flash, Blur, Santana and Stranglers albums. CHOONS!)

Decided to try and change the oil with one of those fluid extraction pump thingies. Bought a Silverline one as it was about half the price of the others. The tube is too bloody wide to go down the dipstick hole, useless. Ended up having to buy a drain plug key and 3/8" socket set (as I had neither) to do it in the end, so that's about £40 on tools just to do a bloody oil change!

Did the filters, spark plugs and alternator belt too. Sounds much nicer at idle and no more screeching when it's cold!

46.5k on the clock now. Still drives beautifully, has no problems starting in the cold (not that there's been much of it) or headgasket failures or spontaneous combustion. wink Love it!

However, I have been thinking of changing laugh I did a little bit of damage to the interior recently and felt really guilty about putting excess wear on such a lovely car. It really was minor but when it's managed 25 years in pristine condition it's bloody frustrating. As the 309 was getting too much 'abuse' lugging crap around and looking set to cover 12k miles this year I considered getting something rougher and more practical. Had a good hunt around for Citroen BX estates but couldn't find any... which is even more frustrating as there were loads around when I last looked in September. Should have bought one instead of that bloody Rallye! Been home from uni over Christmas and rediscovered some local roads in the 309 and decided it was DEFINITELY staying - it is absolutely brilliant fun to drive even though it really has no right to be. Just about every time I left the house I took the long way home, even if it involved going right past home and a few miles in the opposite direction... and then back again for another loop. They aren't the best roads in the world, or even the area, but they're where I first started going for spirited drives so rediscovering them in something new felt particularly joyous. Definitely put me off becoming an OAP again and getting an estate.

But then err... today I spotted something I really want to buy. hehe It's another 309 but with the 1360cc as per my beloved 205. Really quite tempted especially as I know of a TU few tuning bits for sale. It looks well looked after and fairly tidy, but not as much as mine so wouldn't have the same guilt about piling on miles and generally wearing it out. Decisions, decisions.

/ramble thanks for reading

Righto. No updates on the 309 as I got shot of it. Saw a car I really rather fancied so I stuck an ad on a forum (RetroRides) at 2.30pm and it was fully paid for and collected by some brilliantly enthusiastic blokes by 8.30pm. Call me a bumder but I felt really pleased that they were so happy it was in nice condition even though I'd not been the one looking after it for 20 years!

Its replacement is something I just couldn't resist when I saw it: a 205 XS. It was at a good price because of some err... issues so I couldn't stop myself. Happens to be from the same guy I got the last 205 from which you might think would put me off but naaah. Blind faith and that.

Here's his ad pictures:

It's a bit tatty and imperfect but bearably so. The carb is in desperate need of setting up (I think - HG fail has been suggested) - it likes to stall at idle and stutter at high revs, but manages to run reasonably well elsewhere.

After picking it up from The Toon I decided a nice detour through the Dales was in order, and had a chuffing brilliant hoon on the way back to Leeds, in spite of stey weather and a stubborn carburettor. Even managed to take some crap pictures with my broken camera.

This weekend has been a busy one so it's inadvertently had quite a thorough test drive. Between Friday and Monday I've put 750 miles on it, driving seemingly every drab A-road in the country. Would love to say it's been faultless but obviously I'd be lying!

Carb is shagged. Stalls at idle unless you hold your foot on the accel pedal (requires impressive footwork in traffic), stutters at high revs which makes overtaking really quite worrying. Alternator belt went AWOL on the A17 so I did 120miles with a slowly dying battery (it didn't seem too fussed by this, despite LOTS of cranking as it takes an age to start and I did of lot searching to find someone to fit the new belt at 4.30pm on a Saturday - it took me five tries to get 10 minutes of fiddling done FFS! Oh well, total cost was £8.24 which is a very cheap breakdown). Noticed quite a large puddle of oil underneath it, shat myself. Thankfully just the oil filter not done up tight. Slight leak of coolant into the driver's footwell is a bit disconcerting. All else is OK (although the tyres are almost inconceivably lacking in grip, despite being in good condition and recommended for 205s)

All in all, I fking love it. Engine and handling are brilliant, it is a riot to drive even though I've mainly been hacking around DCs and MWays. Just feels oh-so-eager and willing to be razzed around. Going to get my tinkering cap out soon and try not to break it further; this feels like a keeper (the 309 lasted 4 months to the day, hopefully this'll beat it)

As someone who loves old PSA stuff, its a bit scary to see how fast your going through it.
