Been looking around for a project – mild resto – for some time now. Last week I spotted an interesting lot on the well known auction site.

I’d been looking at these online for a while now - missed out on one a few months back – so when this one popped up I swooped and won the auction on Saturday.

What is it? It’s a 1983 UAZ 469B!

Packing a powerful 2.4L with over 75HP...not to be sniffed at....

I’ve named this Project Kozlik. Kozlik is apparently the nickname for the 469 meaning Goat in Russian!

Where am I with this today, well paid the seller and arranged for “The Goat” to be transported to its new home on Friday.

Initial impressions and more pics to come...

I think "dread fascination" is the most apt description for how I'm feeling about this.
I go through a feeling of excitment and then slight trepidation!

Very cool. What are parts like to get for these? Can you order them online easily enough, or do you need to be able to speak Russian?
Parts seem fine to get hold of, loads of links in forums and blogs. I've bookmarked this one as they seem to stock everything!

Post Friday they may or may not have a big order on their hands....

The Goat has arrived!

Started on the button and drove it off the flat bed, seems to run and stop well....on the drive

First thing I noticed is the bonnet, needs a bit more work that I initially thought.

Will give it a good clean and post some more pics when and if it stops raining :/

Love that, was obsessed with a PC game called Operation Flashpoint when I was a kid in which you could make your own maps/missions/etc and there was a whole library of Soviet era vehicles and equipment to choose from!

The UAZ was a staple cool
I think I first drove one in "Mercenaries" on PS2

So first impressions, pretty solid. Took all the rubber mats out to check out the floors and brush out all the debris, quick wipe down and not too bad!

Keep finding random screws, nuts and bolts...getting quite a collection already.

The engine bay looks OK too, new battery and ignition leads. Bit of a spruce and should be good too.

Manoeuvred it out of the way on the drive for the evening, I think the gearbox will take some getting used to. There must be a knack for 1st and reverse!

The bad points, bonnet really is in a sorry state. Paint and filler coming off in big layers, going to check that out in more detail tomorrow, few patches of peeling paint on prob every panel and the bumper has taken a knock at some point and will need pulling out, its one solid piece of metal!

Bit of a strange question possibly but is it metric or imperial? Or something else?

I'm guessing metric.
Yeah so far all metric, rain stopped play :/

So yesterdays tasks....

Managed to clean out the rear and all looking pretty solid and just a cosmetic job!

Sadly the same cant be said of the bonnet, its shot. There were the obvious patches in these pics but the more paint I stripped away the more filler and dents I discovered.

Could spend weeks alone on this alone and not be 100% happy with it. Going to bite the bullet and order a replacement. First purchase of the project, time to update my spreadsheet!

One problem sorted today in between showers, no more leaks, well from this point anyway wink

Emptied out the driver door bin too - literally a bin - gave me a good idea of the journey over!

Loads of random nut, bolts and screws too. Getting quite a collection together!

Weekend is almost here so will be able to get a few tasks done!

First one is to dry it out, lets just say the roof isn't water tight :/

Got the soft top off and leaving it to dry out today, saying that its just clouded over.

Was looking at the underside mid-week and noticed a small hole in one of the fuel tanks - it has 2 - its disconnected so not an issue at the mo. Upon further inspection and after brushing off some of the grime. Its a sieve!

So popped online and sourced a raft of parts which are heading my way from Poland over the next few weeks. Looking forward to these arriving, some big packages including a new bonnet!!

Started the process to get the goat road registered but need an MOT first. Managed to get it insured this morning on the chassis number so will be booking in for MOT soon.

Question, being an ex-military vehicle does it need seat belts for the MOT?...assumption is yes so that maybe on the shopping list this weekend!

I imagine that spares can be had relatively inexpensively given that (according to wiki) they're still in production.

I guess shipping is the stinger with things like this

ETA:
you've not said what year it is, but having watched "Chernobyl" recently, have you gone over it with a Geiger counter? ya know, just to make sure? hehe

Haha! I've managed to decipher some of the paperwork, it's 1983 and had a new engine fitted in '98 which explains why it seems to run ok and just look like sh*t!

Parts were pretty cheap from these guys in Poland - http://sklep.tarmot4x4.pl/ - the postage for bonnet, bumper etc was only about €70 so considering the weight of these things not too bad.

Geiger counter, that might be a fun item to fit!!

That is quite simply cool.

It looks great with the roof off. I imagine you will have a lot of fun in that, at much lower speeds than in that which resides in your garage :-)

Well played.
Thanks!

Haha! Yes I think in terms of speed ...it might just crack 60 mph downhill and with the wind behind me wink

Its just a fun one to work on with my eldest son and hopefully get it in some mud over the next few months.

That's a good result - I like these military blackout light covers: http://sklep.tarmot4x4.pl/pl/p/UAZ-notki-komplet-U...
I did look at these, maybe a future addition. Got to focus on the essentials first sadly - toys will come!

The goat is now insured so can drive to the garage / MOT station soon smile

Orbital sander purchased, start sanding off all the old paint next week. Going to tackle panel by panel - remove, strip and prime!

However, today's job, remove the left fuel tank....

Like a sieve!

These are the only tools - along with a socket set - we've needed to date!

All about the delegation wink

Job done. Full of rust and paper?!

Not sure how much they are new, but you could have a stainless one knocked up quite cheaply to replace that smile
The new one is on order and comes with replacement filters and other bits and pieces, wasn't too pricey. All the parts to date are pretty easy to come by and good value....so far.

Made some real progress today but also a mishap :/

Removed one of the doors that had the worst rust, filler and flaky paint and stripped it all back. Now its ready to prime

Just 4 bolts and off it came, loving the simplicity so far!

Ready to prime smile

The top half of the doors is removable and the driver side bent out a little so tried to force it back into shape, managed to crack the door! Upon closer inspection there was a previous weld on the inside so didn't feel as bad - phew.

Folded down the windscreen to get an idea of what it'll be like next summer on the road with the door tops off and cage removed too - can't wait!

Starting to show dividends now - one door done and back on!

Tomorrow's job!

Right, time for a gin!!
